Apple is an accessory company that makes technology products

[–] Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz 70 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Apple is a dongle manufacturer, but they also sell devices you can stick your dongle into.

Hi, are you new to Apple?

[–] nostradiel@lemmy.world 49 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Everything apple does is overpriced scam on people, so why do you even ask? Be sheep and buy it or unplug and look elsewhere..

[–] NightAuthor@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

There are plenty of reasons to hate apple. But it’s just as sheepish to have your black and white take.

[–] TexMexBazooka@lemm.ee 43 points 1 year ago

Apple? Expensive? Surely not

[–] automattable@lemmy.world 33 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I feel like no one actually needs/wants this adapter, but Apple couldn’t just not make one. So it’s probably priced that way because they don’t expect to sell many at all.

[–] GrayBoltWolf@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

I see it being useful if you wired up your car stereo or something with a lightning cable and you don’t wanna have to take the whole dash apart again.

[–] Emwe@lemmy.world 31 points 1 year ago (2 children)

You chose an excessively overpriced product - now you complain about prices of an the excessively overpriced product's accessories?

woulda thought you had taken these things into consideration when deciding to buy an excessively overpriced product

It’s the stupid tax/desperation tax. Either you are so stupid you’d buy an adapter for your cable that’s more expensive than a new cable or you are so desperate because a vital accessory has lightning built in and won’t work without a dongle

[–] SmoothLiquidation@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

This is the answer. It is expensive because it will be a low demand item. Most people will never need this, so it is a specialty item that is taking up valuable shelf space.

All the conspiracy theories in this thread are just the standard "whaa, they changed something" whining.

Or just get a good USB-C cable for $5

[–] XTornado@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

This is more for accessories with lightning connectors.

That said probably cheaper adapters will appear or maybe already exist 🤔.

It's Apple trying to squeeze the last drop from the Lightning connector before its gone.

[–] chairman 26 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Not expensive. Do you know how much time, effort and money was involved in the design and manufacturing of this splendid piece of hardware from Apple?

By sane standards, yes. By apple standards nope totally normal. I'd love to know how many billions they've made on cables and dongles which were only necessary because of intentional decisions they made. I probably would vomit though.

Also would be curious, how many people suffered or died due to not being able to charge their phone where a standard charger was available or vice versa for Android users?

I've been scoffed at for this idea before, but interoperability is extremely important, especially when you are talking about a major piece of society's infrastructure. And phones ARE that. It's hard to know the downstream effects of shit like this. All we know is that at best, millions of times people have had this conversation, needlessly as fuck:

"hey do you have a phone charger? I need a lightning cable." "No I only have usb-c" (or vice versa)

The best outcome you can hope for is having to think about this and be annoyed several times in your life. For years I refused to buy lightning cables but due to several factors I have ended up needing to buy like 7 lightning cables despite never buying a single apple product that requires one.

And no, apple simps, I give not one shred of a fuck about your apple apologias, fuck off with them. Micro USB was better in the same way a qwerty keyboard is better. technically it's inferior, but that doesn't matter AT ALL, because 1) it's a standard, and 2) it works.

You made your bed.

[–] lom@sh.itjust.works 19 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Also surely this should be called a lightning to USB c adapter and not the other way around?

Based on the size of the connector a tear down is going to show a rather complicated board for a “simple” adaptor. Because the Lightning port is designed to be reconfigured on the fly depending on the accessory plugged in and not a single dumb bus protocol like USB2.0 the chip in this cable needs to be able to talk in HDMI and some other standards.

Fun fact: while Lightning was originally designed around being a reversible USB2.0 connector because of the dynamic reconfiguration of the reversible sides at the port it is capable of speaking in native USB3.0 on all of the pre-Usb-C iPad pros.

The price is reasonable for what it is, honestly, but very few people will actually need to buy one.

Google sells a $15 USB C to 3.5mm headphone jack adapter, and a $45 USB C to HDMI adapter. A $20 USB C to USB A cable. And a $20 USB C to USB C. This is standard market prices for big tech companies. I'm sure in a few weeks Anker or Aukey or whoever will have one for cheaper.

[–] vox@sopuli.xyz 13 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

also usbc to 3.5mm jack adapters have a DAC inside. C-to-HDMI cables have chips in them

can't justify price of A-C/C-C cables tho

But why would you buy this? It looks like its lighting to usb c and in that case why not just use usb c? I know most modern macs have usb c and I would assume if you have the new phone that would necessitate this dongle you would also have the newer mac or PC with a usb c.

Also this is apple they sell wheels for like $900. https://www.apple.com/ca/shop/product/MX572ZM/A/apple-mac-pro-wheels-kit

Definitely overpriced.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 15 points 1 year ago (13 children)

Yes it is. But there's also not one single Apple accessory you have to buy from Apple and can usually get it for a fraction of the price elsewhere, so it's really only ignorant people and dedicated fanboys who spend the money.

If you look up pricing information in the US you will find that it’s abusive and often criminal although not illegal.

Keystone pricing is a lame term they used to use now it’s just criminal pricing imo.

No way is a minute piece of plastic worth that much.

Americans get robbed and it’s normal for some reason.

[–] Stovetop@lemmy.world 18 points 1 year ago (1 children)

No way, you just don't get it.

See, this is the only converter tried and tested to work on Apple iPhone 15™, which incorporates the most advanced technology designed by a dozen skilled engineers at Apple, and then manufactured through an industry-defining precision machining process that can assemble this adapter with accuracy down to the nanometer level. In addition, advancements in materials management have made this the most ecologically friendly adapter yet, using 30% fewer PFAS-containing elements and a 50% reduction in energy costs to meet Apple's 2030 goals. The end result is an adapter that offers no compromises and provides a cutting edge Lightning to USB adaptation experience, now with the USB 2.0 speeds you know and love.

And all of this can be yours for the completely reasonable price of US$29.99 before taxes and fees.

Kind of? It’s fucking absurd. I’ll just get another cable at that price point.

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.ml 14 points 1 year ago (10 children)

FYI, you can buy a 3 pack of USB-C to lightning port cables on Amazon for $7. LOL

What accessory are people even using this with is what I’m not sure of. I’m guessing they aren’t expecting to sell any of these anyway because even in a household full of iPhone users I can’t think of one possible use for this among us.

Luckily this is standardized and you can buy it elsewhere.

[–] rbesfe@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Not even any strain relief on the cable connections, this thing will disintegrate within 3 years

you thought the C in USB-C stands for cheap?

[–] anon_8675309@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

Especially when it only costs a quarter or two to make.

[–] dudewitbow@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 year ago

what do you expect from a company that sells a 19$ polishing cloth and a 1000$ stand. its part of their business to sell you accessories.

[–] SpeedLimit55@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

All apple cables and adapters are overpriced. People should just buy new cables. It takes the same amount of time to plug/unplug an adapter and a cable.

[–] mintberrycrunch@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Yes. Might as well buy new accessories at that point…
