Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

BEING NICE TO WOMEN IS THE MOST BAD*SS THING YOU CAN DO

[–] NoForwardslashS@sopuli.xyz 41 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

To be fair, that is basically describing the beginning few missions of San Andreas anyway.

[–] Emi@ani.social 11 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

The best GTA imo. I love how you can change your character by doing things, binge eating/hitting the gym/etc.

[–] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 5 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

That's an amazing RPG mechanic that I'm amazed that didn't become the norm in RPGs (wonder if they patented it or something).

The more you run the faster you get, the more you fight the stronger you get.

You get progress in an intuitive, and rewarding way. No menus.

[–] PraiseTheSoup@midwest.social 9 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

The more you run the faster you get

The Elder Scrolls

the more you fight the stronger you get

literally every RPG ever made

[–] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 6 points 12 hours ago (3 children)

Not really.

In most RPGs, you get skill points you can then allocate in a menu.

In San Andreas, it was automatic, you run a lot, your running/stamina increases, you punch a lot, your strength goes up...

No menus

[–] Echolynx@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 hours ago

Kingdom Come Deliverance does this pretty well.

[–] PraiseTheSoup@midwest.social 7 points 12 hours ago

I'm well aware of how it worked in San Andreas. Fable 3 tried to eliminate menus and it was by far the worst game in the series because of it.

[–] TotallynotJessica@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

The Elder Scrolls does this too. You increase skills through use which increases their effectiveness (damage for melee skills). Even when leveling up has a menu for attribute allocations, the skills are mostly automatic.

[–] dubyakay@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 hours ago

They mean that GTA:SA did not have visual indicators like menus and stat system showing your progress.

a few years ago I've heard this straight guy give the advice of "of course I'm picking the girl in a third person view game. i'm not gonna stare at a man's behind for hours of playing"

[–] kieron115@startrek.website 12 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

Another one that irks me for some reason is that a LOT of games get the MOST boring, cookie-cutter action hero voice actor for the dude. I just can't get invested when "me" in the game sounds so unenthusiastic. I tend to pick the female character/voice option just bc they seem to put more effort into it. See: CP2077, most bioware games.

[–] PraiseTheSoup@midwest.social 7 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

This is 100% the case in Assassin's Creed Odyssey. Male player character voice sounds absolutely ridiculous, like Christopher Nolan's Batman but even worse.

[–] kieron115@startrek.website 5 points 11 hours ago

Oh man yeah, I didn't even bother playing the male protag since I heard Kassandra was the canonical or intended choice. Then I heard Alex or whoever and was so glad I didn't have to listen much longer.

[–] coriza@lemmy.world 6 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

I picked the female character on cp2077 on a whim and thank God for that. The story is so much better with a female protagonist (at least until now, I haven't finished yet) and V Friendship with Jackie is much more sweet like an unlikely duo. The voice actor is also great. I saw some clips of male V and it not even comparable how different the game feels.

[–] LePoisson@lemmy.world 4 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

I've played through as male and female, they did such an amazing job making the writing and delivery different for Johnny when talking to V.

You can tell he's a misogynist.

[–] kieron115@startrek.website 2 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Oh now THAT is interesting, I played male V then female V but they were so far apart time-wise that I honestly didn't even think about how his dialogue may have changed.

[–] LePoisson@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago

Yeah there is some of the same dialogue of course but there's definitely changes. It was pretty cool to see.

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 26 points 21 hours ago

I alternate between "play the guy because more relatable" and "play the girl because ass"

Then again, my friend also used the "I don't wanna watch a guy all day" reasoning when I asked him and well, now we all know she wanted to be a girl all along.

[–] Fleur_@aussie.zone 4 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

I coped like this when I was younger too. Now I say I play the character that I would most want to be. I'd love to be a super fucking hot girl who commits crimes. Unironically, it appeals to the male fantasy lmao

If one transitions, she can be a super hot girl who commits crimes in numerous countries by simply existing

[–] Kinokoloko@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 20 hours ago

I used that excuse when I was younger and more insecure. Now I just own it and say I do it because I like to play as women more than men. I'm a man IRL, but sometimes I wanna try on the other sex

[–] SunshineJogger@feddit.org 75 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Hell yea. Playing a woman means I can look at a woman all the time I play.

Why would I want to stare at a man the entire game long.

[–] CodingCarpenter@lemmy.ml 30 points 1 day ago (11 children)

This is the oldest excuse in the book. Just admit you want to be a girl this time. There's no shame in it. Or any reason at all to say "hur hur I want look at lady, boys gross"

Who even looks at the models? Enjoy the works around the character

[–] chonglibloodsport@lemmy.world 27 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I play female characters without any desire to be a woman. I don’t identify with the characters I play just as a ventriloquist doesn’t identify with his puppet.

[–] Glytch@lemmy.world 5 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Having met a number of ventriloquists, they often identify with their puppets an unhealthy amount.

[–] chonglibloodsport@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago

Right but the fact that you marked it as unhealthy is a key point. It’s not something we should expect!

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 12 points 20 hours ago

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar....

[–] Tar_alcaran@sh.itjust.works 36 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Sorry, but guy asses aren't as pretty as girl asses. Im a bi girl though, so probably not representative of the population.

[–] Ansis100@lemmy.world 14 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

I mean, girl asses are much prettier than guy asses. I'm a straight guy, though, so probably an even worse representative of the population.

[–] seralth@lemmy.world 18 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

Guy asses COULD be just as pretty as girl asses. But no game studio ever gives guys nice asses. Literally ever.

Men MUST have flat sad buttocks. So it has been deemed. So we all sadly must suffer.

idk, I would legit undress botw link sometimes just to admire

[–] Tonava@sopuli.xyz 8 points 18 hours ago

At least men get better walking and running animations. With women it's that weird boobs first knees together -waddle

[–] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 13 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I am legit one of the men who likes to play as a woman in games from time to time without any excuse. I have always been a maverick. I always like to go against the perceived norm and I enjoy doing something different. Playing as a woman for me is always spicing things up and a break from the usual man things, whatever that is.

That said, FemShep is the only Shep!

[–] Glytch@lemmy.world 4 points 12 hours ago

That said, FemShep is the only Shep!

It really not even a fair fight, Jennifer Hale is one of the best VAs in the business. Mark Meer, whose name I had to look up, just doesn't compare.
