Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

can someone draw what a :? face is meant to look like

[–] yetAnotherUser@lemmy.ca 9 points 3 hours ago (2 children)

Here ya go!

Simple drawing of a face. Each eye is represented by a dot. In place of a mouth, there is a sideways question mark. The face has no nose.

...And I still don't know what it's meant to look like.

Is this loss

[–] match@pawb.social 1 points 2 hours ago

You're right it does look like homestuck

[–] nimpnin@sopuli.xyz 12 points 6 hours ago

Fake, no grindr chat has that few dick picks

Homestuck fans are all embarrassed to be homestuck fans (in a funny knowing way). Calling them out is similar to telling someone they lost the game.

This guy used an emoticon that’s common in the homestuck community for whatever reason so they got called out and gave a silly exaggerated reaction.

I never read homestuck, but my sister did so I’ve been adjacent to it for a long time

The closest I've come to the truth is that :? is used in homestuck when characters are confused. How this makes one a "ho", I'm not sure.

Homestuck fans are horny as fuck for some reason

[–] superb@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 3 hours ago

[–] jsomae@lemmy.ml 7 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

ho mestuck

that's my best guess

[–] petrol_sniff_king@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 42 minutes ago

That's okay. I can be the young person liaison here.

'ho' is slang, and while derived from 'whore', it is often used in neutral or even positive contexts as an ironic term of endearment, but with a certain "bad bitch" flavor to it. ("bad bitch" means "very cool")

Also, sometimes it doesn't have that flavor. Cuss words are often extremely flexible and can be used almost anywhere. For example, "you fucker" can mean "you bastard!," "you idiot," or "you lovable doofus<3" depending on who, what and why it's being said.

In this case, 'ho' just means "person." "Clocked that person."

These two people might be friends, given their text messages, but it's possible nb1rs is just being cavalier.

If you listen to rap, especially rap by women, you will probably hear this word a lot, in every context imaginable.

looking at all zero answers, apparently people is upvoting the post without any reason

[–] enbiousenvy@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 5 hours ago

I may usually laugh at a joke because my brain making up internal funny reason on why I should laugh without any context whatsoever.

Sometimes when I actually read what other people think about it, I might realize that it's funny not the way I think.

maybe this happens to more people that I realize but I don't know.

real 00s kids remember coming home and turning on the laptop to Homestuck: The Animated Series while we cuddled our squiddles and posted duck to /b/

[–] tetris11@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 hour ago

All I remember is that one [S] Cascade video, with that kick-ass song. Apparently it no longer exists on youtube except in an updated 3D animation version

[–] cobysev@lemmy.world 15 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Considering its "run time" was from 2009-2016, the actual dates of the webcomic, I'm assuming it's just categorizing it as a show because of all the flash animations included with the comic.

There are other web series that show up as TV shows on IMDb, like The Nostalgia Critic, which has never been an officially licensed show, but have enough serialized video media to constitute a series of sorts.

[–] tetris11@lemmy.ml 4 points 6 hours ago

oh right, yeah good point

[–] JayDee@lemmy.sdf.org 12 points 8 hours ago
