Laura Loomer lamented that the new pope ‘is anti-Trump, anti-MAGA, pro-open Borders, and a total Marxist like Pope Francis,’ adding that it’s ‘GROSS’ that he now leads the Catholic Church

It didn’t take long for right-wing media figures and MAGA provocateurs to cry out in rage over the election of Robert Prevost as Pope Leo XIV after it was revealed that he’d publicly criticized JD Vance and expressed sympathy for immigrants and George Floyd.

Despite feeling national pride over the fact that the Chicago-born Prevost has become the first American pope in history, conservative pundits and Trump loyalists fumed over the “WOKE MARXIST POPE” and complained that he is “worse than Francis,” referencing the previous pontiff known for his progressive values.

Even before the “dark horse” American cardinal was elected the 267th pope, former Trump chief strategist Steve Bannon warned about Prevost’s views, claiming that he would be a poor choice for the MAGA movement.

MAGA ISN'T A MOVEMENT IT'S A REGIME.

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 3 points 34 minutes ago (1 children)

Whaaaaat? This isn't what Jesus would have wanted!

Greed 4:19 "You get your own fish and loaves. I paid for this. I can throw it on the floor if I want. Suck it up libtards!"

[–] HasturInYellow@lemmy.world 3 points 4 minutes ago

That's my favorite Bible story.

[–] Allero@lemmy.today 21 points 2 hours ago (2 children)

Thinking a second about this, he literally pwned MAGA

The entire conservative line of thought is backed by Christianity and American exceptionalism, and now there comes an American pope and tells "You're not following the God's word". That's a damn checkmate.

Wonder how many MAGA supporters, many of which are devout Christians, will start questioning their beliefs.

Also, lol, a Marxist Pope is top comedy.

[–] InputZero@lemmy.world 19 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

They won't question their Christian beliefs for a single second because they didn't have any in the first place. They'll turn their backs and say "The Pope went woke," still call themselves godly Christians, and continue to spread hate. During that whole time they will never question whether or not they're Christian, they'll just hate the Pope too.

[–] Regrettable_incident@lemmy.world 5 points 44 minutes ago

Yeah, exactly this. It can be confusing because they call themselves Christians, loudly and frequently - but their attitudes and beliefs have sweet fuck all to do with the teachings of Christ.

It's kinda like the way they use 'Marxist' for anyone left of Mussolini. I'm not sure if it's a deliberate attempt to shift definitions, or if they don't understand what the words actually mean. Wankers.

[–] AFaithfulNihilist@lemmy.world 13 points 1 hour ago

Much of the American Christian establishment is the type of Protestant that does not consider Catholics to be Christian.

I know that doesn't really make a whole lot of sense but that's how Americans "do religion".

Baptists don't care what the Pope has to say, seventh-day Adventists think he is actually the Antichrist. Most American Catholics don't really care what the Vatican has to say and would resent the implication that they're supposed to give a shit about the Pope's opinion.

Americans just don't do religion very well.

[–] lipilee 3 points 1 hour ago

I didn't care about who the new pope was but he's getting more sympathetic by the minute.

[–] StephaneF@jlai.lu 1 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

There is no such thing as marxist pope.

[–] wetling@lemmy.world 1 points 58 minutes ago (1 children)

Are you calling Lara Loomer a liar?

[–] StephaneF@jlai.lu 1 points 50 minutes ago

Leo XIII called marxism a "deadly plague". I guess Leo XIV chose his name because he's ok with his predecessor.

[–] pinguin@fault.su 14 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

I’m ever so closer to crossing Trump suggesting the US goes to war with the Vatican City off my 2025 bingo card…

[–] Spezi@feddit.org 1 points 23 minutes ago

I wonder how switzerland would react.

[–] YarHarSuperstar@lemmy.world 1 points 59 minutes ago

I'm adding that to mine now don't tell anyone

[–] The_Caretaker@lemm.ee 65 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

I'm an atheist and I have no use for any religion, but if this new Pope pisses off MAGA, I could become a fan.

[–] ToastedRavioli@midwest.social 44 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

You know things are bad if the Catholic church is a last bastion for progressive social change

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 1 points 45 seconds ago

A Canticle For Leibowitz is not an instruction manual.

[–] YarHarSuperstar@lemmy.world 1 points 58 minutes ago (1 children)

Didn't they kind of trend this way a bit after Vatican II?

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 11 points 4 hours ago

Of course Laura Loonie is against anything that is good in the world.

[–] DBT@lemmy.world 55 points 7 hours ago (2 children)

MAGA would melt down no matter who they picked because everything maga is doing right now is the opposite of what Jesus would do, and whoever is the pope is going to criticize maga for being terrible humans.

[–] NotMyOldRedditName@lemmy.world 17 points 5 hours ago

Pope 1: MAGA Bad!

Pope 2: MAGA Bad!

Highly Religious MAGA: Pope Bad!

Gotta love it.

[–] Merva@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 hours ago

They would probably be alright if they had picked Trump as pope.

[–] PurpleTentacle@lemmy.world 18 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

That's probably one of the most positive things written about the new pope.

From what I have read so far, he's the "middle of the road" candidate, your average, run-of-the-mill, Catholic bishop:

A little anti-LGBT, just a bit of a pedophile protector and apologist, default-sexist ... but not hard-line enough to not make any of it his entire personality.

[–] uniquethrowagay@feddit.org 21 points 5 hours ago

Yeah he's a conservative. But that's not enough for Republicans anymore, you need to be a full blown fascist or you're not acceptable.

[–] simplejack@lemmy.world 26 points 6 hours ago

Imagine being more conservative than the Catholic Church.

[–] comador@lemmy.world 14 points 6 hours ago (2 children)
[–] Regrettable_incident@lemmy.world 1 points 37 minutes ago

You'd have thought that would win him some points with MAGA

[–] ikidd@lemmy.world 6 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

He'll fit right into the roster.

Fuck the motherfucking pope. And if you're more offended by that than by the scumbag popes that cover for kiddy-fuckers, then fuck you too.

[–] Lon3star@lemmy.world 117 points 9 hours ago (3 children)

MAGA would crucify Jesus all over again

[–] masinko@lemmy.world 18 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Jesus? That woke ass dude who believes in hand outs (feed the poor), pro-DEI (love thy neighbor), anti-capital punishment (preaches forgiveness)?

[–] MuskyMelon@lemmy.world 9 points 6 hours ago (1 children)
[–] Manalith@midwest.social 2 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

What are you talking about? I have his picture on my mantle, he looks like Ewan McGregor wearing monk robes.

/s, obviously that's my Obi Wan shrine.

[–] cook_pass_babtridge@feddit.uk 2 points 49 minutes ago

The true face of Jesus.

[–] pivot_root@lemmy.world 56 points 9 hours ago

Crucify? Oh, no, no, no.

They would have him arrested and detained by plain-clothes ICE agents, held in a Texas concentration camp where he would be bundled with the "illegals," then shipped off to El Salvador to be starved and worked to death... Twice.

[–] b161@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

They would have set attack dogs on him in Palestine, bombed his extended family, then made Tik Tok videos mocking his death.

Very good! I see this as confirmation that they elected the right man for the job 😊

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 271 points 12 hours ago (12 children)

When you start calling every leader of the Catholic Church a Marxist, you've seriously lost the plot. The American right is ridiculous.

[–] shawn1122@lemm.ee 95 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago) (5 children)

They should cut to the chase and call Jesus a Marxist.

Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. Luke 12:33

Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” Mark 10:21

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?  When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you?  When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ Matthew 25:34-40

According to headlines lately, MAGA melts down fucking constantly. I hypothesize that they're actually just liquid. They aren't 'melting down', this is just their natural state.

[–] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 13 points 8 hours ago

The natural state of the MAGAT, is a smelly shart.

I’ve posted this before but they don’t get to say “not my pope” they don’t get a vote. That’s the reality of faith based leaderships.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 15 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

You think thats bad? You should read what their so called messiahs policies were.
