Laura Loomer lamented that the new pope ‘is anti-Trump, anti-MAGA, pro-open Borders, and a total Marxist like Pope Francis,’ adding that it’s ‘GROSS’ that he now leads the Catholic Church

It didn’t take long for right-wing media figures and MAGA provocateurs to cry out in rage over the election of Robert Prevost as Pope Leo XIV after it was revealed that he’d publicly criticized JD Vance and expressed sympathy for immigrants and George Floyd.

Despite feeling national pride over the fact that the Chicago-born Prevost has become the first American pope in history, conservative pundits and Trump loyalists fumed over the “WOKE MARXIST POPE” and complained that he is “worse than Francis,” referencing the previous pontiff known for his progressive values.

Even before the “dark horse” American cardinal was elected the 267th pope, former Trump chief strategist Steve Bannon warned about Prevost’s views, claiming that he would be a poor choice for the MAGA movement.

When you start calling every leader of the Catholic Church a Marxist, you've seriously lost the plot. The American right is ridiculous.

They should cut to the chase and call Jesus a Marxist.

Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. Luke 12:33

Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” Mark 10:21

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?  When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you?  When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ Matthew 25:34-40

Why would they? They already rewrote him to what they want: white, blond, freedom, and capitalism something or other.

[–] Hasherm0n@lemmy.world 10 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

I always see excuses from them like "that should be the role of charity" "that should be people's choice, not forced on them by the government" etc...

[–] tamman2000@lemm.ee 4 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

It's always sad/funny to me that they are ok with forcing the bad parts of their faith on us via the government, but reject the good parts that most non theists would support

[–] Zippygutterslug@lemmy.world 29 points 20 hours ago (3 children)

Yeah, it was Ohio Catholics (and their momey) that put JD Vance in the running for VP in the first place. People are putting a lot of faith that this Cardinal wrote his own tweets. I wouldn't be opposed to an anti-Trump pope but to call him one is counting chickens before they hatch. Let's see what he does when Trump puts some pressure on him.

[–] GuyFawkes@midwest.social 16 points 19 hours ago (3 children)

…wouldn’t be opposed to an anti-Trump pope

Dude that’s the only kind of Pope I can get behind.

[–] NuXCOM_90Percent@lemmy.zip 11 points 19 hours ago

I mean, this pope is still all about protecting priests who got behind small children.

[–] jbrains@sh.itjust.works 8 points 19 hours ago

Better you behind the Pope than...

[–] Zachariah@lemmy.world 2 points 19 hours ago

By the time they’re Pope, they’re too old to be a choir boy.

[–] disguy_ovahea@lemmy.world 11 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Popes choose their own name. Pope Leo seems to have been a specific selection.

St. Leo the Great was a Roman Catholic Pope who reigned from 440 to 461. He is remembered for his strong defense of papal authority, his theological writings on Christ's humanity and divinity, and his role in meeting with Attila the Hun and the Vandals to prevent them from destroying Rome.

[–] angrystego@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

Did he specify already that he chose to name himself after St. Leo the Great? I'm probably out of the loop, I thought we were still guessing which one of the previous 13 popes Leos he's named after.

[–] b_tr3e@feddit.org 6 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Trump putting pressure on the pontifex maximus? I'm not a catholic but I'd say that might be somewhat difficult but certainly interesting. You are aware that the pope is head of his own state and doesn't give a fuck about American legislation or sanctions? The US can't even invade Vatican State without triggering article 5 of the NATO manifesto which might cause even more interesting political turbulences. Specifically with the more strictly catholic NATO members first of all, obviously, Italy.

[–] Zippygutterslug@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

Is Sweden a NATO country? Trump is demanding they do all kinds of dumb crap. Is Greenland a sovereign country? Trump says he hasn't ruled out military action to take it. Let's be real about one thing: the day after the pope died, Trump posted an AI picture of himself as pope. If this pope speaks out against him, Trump will fuck with him. That dementia riddled felon don't give a fuck. And when he does, I hope the pope holds his ground.

A pope could make a lot of ground pushing antiabortion and anticontraception and anti-lgbtq policy in exchange for support. It was Ohio Catholics that got Vance his VP seat. So hopefully Pope Leo isn't a "postliberal" catholic.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

It was Peter theil who got Vance his seat, not Ohio catholics. Ohio isn't a swing state anymore

[–] Zippygutterslug@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

Peter Theil is a patron of many postliberal (fascist) Catholics, but he is not Vance's only Catholic patron.

[–] b_tr3e@feddit.org 1 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

Nonsense. You seem to think the USA is everywhere and you don't understand the difference between states and individuals. Trump has zero authority in Vatican state. The pope does not leave Vatican state and "go home" anywhere. Not ever, except for official visits. Trump can fuck wall outlets or squirrels but he has absolutely no viable way to screw with the pope - he can't even threat to sanction the Vatican as he did with Sweden and whoever else, because the do not export anything. He can't freeze his payments because he literally owns nothing. Right: the pope does not recieve a salary and does not have any personal belongings. He doesn't need to pay for anything (there are people in his entourage who will do that for him) he does not need to own something, the Vatican will provide anything the pope requires.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

Hell, by the time you're a bishop the catholic church will put you in any allied country they feel like and if there's nowhere else to go the Vatican can house you for life. The pope is basically a citizen of catholicism.

[–] Zippygutterslug@lemmy.world 0 points 5 hours ago

Lol OK, I guess God will protect the Pope from Trump lmfaoooo

[–] Plebcouncilman@sh.itjust.works 3 points 16 hours ago

I mean they are the original globalists and Jesus was literally a communist so…. I don’t know, they might be right. The church just doesn’t like to telegraph it too much.
