My folks: maybe a dictator is what we need.

... my has the educational system failed you. Or perhaps you don't understand the meaning of words? Did those years of leaded gasoline get to you? I'm dumbfounded.

[–] Blackout@kbin.social 103 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They are brainwashed. I got a cold for the 2nd time this season. My dad: well you shouldn't have gotten the flu shot. My response in front of the whole family: I thought you didn't go to college let alone medical school. How did you have the time with all the television you watch?

[–] henfredemars@infosec.pub 35 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Indeed. I've been trying to push them away from watching so much Fox News and actually picking up a book on these topics. I've seen the stuff they watch, and it's all garbage. Of course they are going to think crazy things if everything they are consuming is crazy.

It's a real shame. I can't completely separate from these people, but I've lost friends over such ridiculous claims. It's a shame.

[–] PalmTreeIsBestTree@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

At the end of the day they are lazy and don’t care to actually use their brains. This a huge problem with older Americans.

Remember if you ever mention communism it's "DiCtAtOrS KiLlEd PeOpLe!" But if it's Trump dictatorship then suddenly it's ok.

I hate these people.

They would be hurting the right people this time around

The Allies forced the German civilians to dig graves for the concentration camps so they could see the inhumanity their complacency and tacit approval caused. I've never appreciated my history classes more and I'm terribly sorry for the schools and children that are performing historical revisionism to well documented events.

Also, I went to the gatewaypundit site TFG linked to and read some comments. One commenter suggesting someone who disagreed commit suicide (and of course they knew how to bypass filters, so it's a tactic they use often). Folks are still suggesting the election was stolen then with the same breath saying to circle the ballot processing centers and not let vans through. The cognitive dissonance for these self-titled "critical thinkers" is beyond scary.

Edit: wanted to fact check my memory, here's a photo.

At my US high school we spent two days in mandatory silence walking around the classroom viewing these types of Holocaust pictures and reading descriptions of the images.

We spent the rest of the lesson arc discussing and unpacking the atrocities and horror of radicalization, hatred, ignorance, and war as a group. It was a surreal experience.

We had a similar experience in US history with slavery and the Civil Rights movement.

The media has a boner for this happening

[–] tacosplease@lemmy.world 41 points 1 year ago (8 children)

They give it so much oxygen and also never fully call out how crazy shit is. It's all understatement when it comes to conservatives' behavior and plans and then they over hype any minor issue the progressives have. Looking at you, NY Times...

Don't these media outlets understand they will be among the first to get thrown into prison camps when conservative dictatorship and revenge is in full swing?

Ahahahahahahahahahahaha

"Most of the ads are not about issues. They're sort of like the debates," Moonves said, noting, "[t]here's a lot of money in the marketplace."

The 2016 campaign is a "circus," he remarked, but "Donald's place in this election is a good thing." "Man, who would have expected the ride we're all having right now? ... The money's rolling in and this is fun," Moonves went on. "I've never seen anything like this, and this going to be a very good year for us. Sorry. It's a terrible thing to say. But, bring it on, Donald. Keep going.”

Worth remembering when this comes up that this has been exacerbated recently by leadership changes at the times. They hired some fox fuck heads with the intent to both sides the country into a dictatorship.

[–] tacosplease@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Damn. CNN had a similar change relating to new leadership. If not to damage CNN and other traditional news sources, what are they even trying to accomplish? It's not like conservatives are coming back to replace the progressive viewers who were pushed away. The result is less revenue for CNN; less revenue for NYT...

But maybe that's the point like with Twitter. They "invest" the purchase price so they can kill the network or ruin its credibility to remove the contrast between the nonsense on Fox, OAN, etc and previously respected organizations.

Plus all the local news stations are being quietly bought by larger organizations with the same intentions if not worse.

Good faith journalism has been experiencing a hostile takeover, and it's speeding up.

I don't think they realize they need to consider if they prefer clicks over a free press.

They will be some of the first victims. And they don't even seem to know it.

[–] stolid_agnostic@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 year ago

More and more it’s clear that they are in it in for the clicks and not the reporting.

What will it take for the "MSM" to say straight out that the man is mentally unbalanced?

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 56 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The media wants a horse race because that's how they make money. It can't be a horse race when one of the two candidates is a deranged, babbling moron.

[–] krashmo@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago

Sure it can. You're watching it happen right now.

[–] NounsAndWords@lemmy.world 19 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

He's riling up a pre-enraged group to outright accept him as a dictator. The water is muddied. He is talking about becoming a dictator and he has not been disqualified from office.

It's nothing good, but I don't think I would call it 'unbalanced' to set the stage for a dictatorship when your stated goal is to become a literal dictator.

[–] beebarfbadger@lemmy.world 19 points 1 year ago (1 children)

and he has not been disqualified from office

He has very much been disqualified from office, but like when Obama's pick for the supreme court was just blatantly ignored with the most thinly veiled excuses, the people in charge of executing the respective laws instead choose to bend over for the guy who has blackmailing material on them and/or promises them even more massive tax cuts, profits and power.

[–] NounsAndWords@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

And if he's somehow voted back in, he will be equally disqualified as those Justices.

....which is to say not for any practical purposes, which is exactly the problem in the first place. He should be but at this point he is not.

[–] Australis13@fedia.io 8 points 1 year ago

I doubt that they ever will.

Anybody that can possibly vote for him knowing what he's already done and what he's planning on doing need to have their voting rights stripped away. If you're trying plunge the US into a dictatorship, you shouldn't be able to participate in the democratic process anymore, your opinion doesn't count for anything, you're guilty of supporting insurrection.

Really feels like MAGA voters themselves are a threat to America. I don't say that lightly and am willing to be persuaded.

If it really is the case... What do we do about them? They don't want to be educated on the issues and are immune to shame. What's left to do?

Economic solutions are preferable to more aggressive options. Any ideas?

[–] Mo9000@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago (2 children)

You're just feeling this now...?

[–] mo_ztt@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

On Tyranny represents a pretty good guidebook for concrete specific things you can do, well informed by historical research. This interview has a slight introduction to a couple of the main recommendations and the reasons for them.

[–] tacosplease@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

This poll 2 years ago would not show "revenge" and "dictatorship" as the top answers. We've had issues for a while. They're escalating.

So yes. The escalation to our current level of battshittery is relatively new. Previous answers would have been things like border security, trade deficit, etc. -- still stupid but not in the ballpark of where we are today.

[–] Powerpoint@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 year ago

Fascists are a problem, yes

[–] DogMuffins@discuss.tchncs.de 9 points 1 year ago

I have some great ideas: improve education, reduce inequality, introduce preferential voting.

Seriously though, these problems are occuring the world over. I'm not an anthropologist but IMO the root cause is income inequality. Basically the working class are increasingly dissatisfied and the frustration manifests in very strange ways. There's no fix for this other than societal collapse as a result of economic, environmental, or societal unrest. This part of the cycle will probably take 300 years or so, depending on the whole climate change thing.

The word cloud had been published by The Daily Mail, which said it had polled 1,000 likely voters, asking them to describe in one word what President Joe Biden and Trump each want from a second term.

I believe Cheeto Mussolini should be in prison, but they asked voters what they think that Biden/Trump would want from another term.

[–] MimicJar@lemmy.world 23 points 1 year ago (2 children)

For completeness sake and to save anyone else from visiting The Daily Mail.

It's meant to be negative but seems pretty chill to me.

[–] PM_Your_Nudes_Please@lemmy.world 25 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Honestly, after having Trump in office for 4 years, Biden’s milquetoast term has been refreshing. It’s nice to wake up every morning and not have to read about the president of the United States beefing with a 12 year old girl on Twitter overnight for the third time in a month.

Biden is boring. But I’m tired of living through what will inevitably be several chapters in future World History textbooks; I could use some more “boring” in politics, because “boring” is stable and predictable.

[–] Fades@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

First president to ever join the picket lines, telling pharmaceutical companies the gov will snatch their taxpayer funded patents away if they keep gouging, big steps toward cannabis, major efforts to forgive student loans, lowest inflation rate in the g7, lowest unemployment rate in a very long time, personally involved in getting ceasefires and the like in Gaza, etc etc

milquetoast

boring

I’m no Biden cheerleader but you’re being quite reductive

It also has mucho Biden which literally translates into “a lot Biden” so he’s an idiot just like the people taking the poll. They likely thought it was “macho” Biden which makes both even more idiotic.

[–] Socsa@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Revenge for what exactly? What have liberals actually done to Trump supporters besides vote against him?

[–] mo_ztt@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

They tried to prosecute him. In MAGA world, that demands an escalation in kind to attack ("defend") against the prosecution; the truth or falsehood of the accusation doesn't matter. They also think Biden stole the election, although as before, they don't really care in an objective sense whether that's actually factually true. They believe it wholeheartedly and that's all they care about.

There's also a fiction that "they" are trying to put kitty litter in your classrooms and tell your kids to pretend to be cats and pee in the litterbox, or allow transgender people into women's bathrooms because someone "became transgender" for that exact purpose, or other weird and outlandish things, but I don't think those are really getting traction as much as they'd like them to. I think it's mainly a standard sociopath pattern of "I did an illegal thing" -> "You're reacting as if it's illegal" -> "My god how could you make that wild accusation and be an enemy to me" -> "I attack you".
