I work a weird night shift schedule, so I find myself doing a lot of grocery shopping and such later at night, because that's when I'm awake (and also the stores are less crowded)

One time I was heading back to my car, it was dark, probably around 10pm, the lot was mostly empty. A Hispanic guy with a heavy accent was flagging me down from a couple rows over, asking if I had jumper cables, so I drove my car over and gave him a jump. Shared some brief chitchat over whether we thought it was his battery or his alternator, shook hands, and we went on our separate ways.

Another time, I was walking into the store, and stopped in the fire lane was a car, with a handful of younger black people trying to get it started with a jump starter. It looked like they knew more or less what they were doing, so I went in and did my grocery shopping. They were still there when I came out, so it was pretty clear that the power pack they had didn't quite have enough juice to do the trick, so I grabbed my cables and headed over to lend a hand. Again, got their car started, shot the shit with them a bit, and went about my night.

Neither one was a big deal, I'd hope that anyone would do the same for me.

But when I think about those situations, empty parking lots, late at night, people of color, I think about how many people probably would have just ignored them and not lent a hand.

Guess I should have been filming, I could have a political career.

But the real moral of the story is if you have a car, go buy some jumper cables. They're not that expensive, they last basically forever, and sooner or later you or someone else is going to need a jump and you'll be ready to save the day. When I bought my first car at 18, my first stop on my way home from the dealership was to buy a set of jumper cables and some other basic emergency supplies to throw in my trunk. I probably find myself using them at least a couple times a year. Still have those same cables going on a decade later. Probably one of the best purchases I've ever made.

You're a good, kind, knowledgeable soul. Please keep being you.

Absolute necessity. Those jump packs can be nice too if you treat them right, mine has always worked so far when needed but most of the credit for that should probably go to my recurring "battery check" calendar reminder every few months. Nice to be able to get yourself out of a bad situation when nobody else is around or have one fewer problem to solve if there's tricky terrain or tight quarters getting in the way of hooking up cables.

Gotta love these aging dickheads who just used POCs as props all the fucking time. This asshat staged these exact same situations for years and put them up as PR bullshit.

Also, did they think this was going to look candid or something? Why was there one camera at Cuomo's car, then another in the other dudes car? Just two people happened to be filming this TOTALLY NATURAL everyday thing with multiple positions and cameras?

Fucking morons.

Come one, at this point he's just there to get donations, pay his friends some money for shitty ads and pocket the rest. I would say that the morons are the billionaires still giving him money but for they it's pocket change and they'll will get political favors from the party one way or another.

They're spending more money on campaigns then what they'd ever have to pay extra in tax, they're not even rational at this point any more.

It's about power, it's always been about power. We had systems in place to limit this shit but our politicians are corrupt.

That's what depresses me most regarding stunts like this: it does work on a portion of the populace.

And who the fuck actually records video in landscape mode?! Like in reality it’s always portrait mode.

edit I’m not saying portrait is better. I hardly ever use my phones cameras. But most videos on the internet from the past 10 years are portrait mode.

And who the fuck actually records video in landscape mode

I dunno, people who understand how to film and take photographs?

[–] just_another_person@lemmy.world 9 points 3 hours ago

Almost always landscape here. I MAKE THE EFFORT, DAMMIT 🤣

Billionaires and their ghouls pretending to care for the people by doing pseudo-vigilante stuff instead of fixing the structural problems they themselves help create and maintain is on brand for Batman.

Honestly, henching for Batman's villains can be pretty good if you choose the right Boss.

  • Penguin pays well as long as you do good work and stay on your best behavior around him.
  • Working under Joker directly is dangerous, but working alongside his crew to pull off a big job can work out. Joker can be pretty reliable if his teammates show him respect. Joker would love to do a job against Trump or Musk.
  • Working for Ivy can be okay if you're female. If you try to sign up with Ivy as a dude, she'll probably brainwash or kill you on the spot.
  • Working for Riddler can be okay if you can look stupid. That guy loves to be the smartest person in the room. He might let your paychecks bounce, though.
  • Working for Two Face all depends on how lucky you are. If you're lucky, Two Face will be happy to give you a good share of the loot.
  • Black Mask is a bigger believer in swift punishment than Penguin. If you fail him big time, Black Mask will kill you and the other guys on the job with you in a horrible way. Penguin will spare you, but he'll make you wish he killed you. Aside from that, you can make good money working for him.
  • Scarecrow has a hidden benefit for his employees - he wants to spread his fear toxin as much as possible, so he may reward you for furthering his research if you test his fear toxin on people, and record the results.

  • Ra's al Ghul would probably be good for mercenary work especially if he takes a liking to you. If you are lucky he may even give you access to a lazuras pit.

  • Bane is smart enough and generally honorable enough that if you proved useful he would be unlikely to kill you, he may even be willing to work with suggestions and critique.

  • Honorable mentions for a non Batman villain. Snowflame you get more or less free access to all the cocaine and your boss will remember your name.

  • Dishonorable mention, the Penny Plunderer. He would pay you only in pennies.
