Settlers: The Mythology Of The White Proletariat from Mayflower to Modern - J. Sakai cracker

A uniquely important book in the canon of the North American revolutionary left and anticolonial movements, Settlers was first published in the 1980s. Written by activists with decades of experience organizing in grassroots anticapitalist struggles against white supremacy, the book established itself as an essential reference point for revolutionary nationalists and dissident currents within the Marxist-Leninist and anarchist movements. Always controversial within the establishment left, Settlers uncovers centuries of collaboration between capitalism and white workers and their organizations, as well as their neocolonial allies, showing how the United States was designed from the ground up as a parasitic and genocidal entity. As recounted in painful detail by J. Sakai, the United States has been built on the theft of Indigenous lands and of Afrikan labor, on the robbery of the northern third of Mexico, the colonization of Puerto Rico, and the expropriation of the Asian working class, with each of these crimes being accompanied by violence.

The counter-revolution of 1776: slave resistance and the origins of the United States of America - Gerald Horne amerikkka

In this trailblazing book, Gerald Horne complements his earlier celebrated Negro Comrades of the Crown, by showing that in the prelude to 1776, the abolition of slavery seemed all but inevitable in London, delighting Africans as much as it outraged slaveholders, and sparking the colonial revolt. In the prelude to 1776, more and more Africans were joining the British military, and anti-slavery sentiments were deepening throughout Britain. And in the Caribbean, rebellious Africans were chasing Europeans to the mainland. Unlike their counterparts in London, the European colonists overwhelmingly associated enslaved Africans with subversion and hostility to the status quo. For European colonists, the major threat to security in North America was a foreign invasion combined with an insurrection of the enslaved. And as 1776 approached, London-imposed abolition throughout the colonies was a very real and threatening possibility--a possibility the founding fathers feared could bring the slave rebellions of Jamaica and Antigua to the thirteen colonies. To forestall it, they went to war. The so-called Revolutionary War, Horne writes, was in large part a counter-revolution, a conservative movement that the founding fathers fought in order to preserve their liberty to enslave others--and which today takes the form of a racialized conservatism and a persistent racism targeting the descendants of the enslaved. The Counter-Revolution of 1776 drives us to a radical new understanding of the traditional heroic creation myth of the United States.

If we can no longer effectively surf USA then we are lost as a people.

Cut myself in the dumbest way, by keeping a knife in a drawer and reaching in without looking. Idk if I should get rid of the knife now that it’s developed a taste for blood

is it bad to just catch the highest level exception/error type instead of trying to catch the more specific lower level ones

I'm realizing I always do that, and it feels kinda lazy

For the older folks in this site, what were some emo bands from the third wave that were closer to the first 2 waves? Like glassjaw, thursday, first saosin ep, q and not u, the first chiodos ep. Are what comes to mind for me.

[–] ratboy@hexbear.net 5 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago) (2 children)

Thrice, Finch, Poison the Well, Fall of Troy, The Used, and These Arms Are Snakes were bands I listened to a lot when I was in my Warped Tour era lol. Botch is a bit older but I think they kinda fit. I think Hot Water Music was one too. I don't really qualify that era as emo but I guess that's kinda the closest genre.

Glassjaw fucking slaps they were my faaaavorite for a long time

[–] CocteauChameleons@hexbear.net 3 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

Fall of Troy rocks, I saw them last year and they're still great

Knapsack? Small Brown Bike? Lifetime?

[–] CocteauChameleons@hexbear.net 3 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Thanks I really liked Knapsack - Cellophane

[–] FidelChadstro@hexbear.net 3 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

I'm glad you like it, my partner introduced them to me. I've always sought out punk music but she likes 90s emo, which of course has it's roots in punk music, so I've enjoyed lots of it. If you haven't already listened to Jawbreaker, check them out. Pretty similar to that Knapsack track imo

I love how shitty and liberal some of the shithole lemmy instances hexbear is federated with are. Like that db0 shithole where the admin running it posted some crybaby anarchist anti ML bullshit and then cried when their bait got them jumped on by the mean MLs

I think they just banned me for saying "shut the fuck up liberal" to a post using scare quotes referring to "Israel's 'genocide'"

[–] Nakoichi@hexbear.net 16 points 11 hours ago

You should absolutely add WEB Du Bois black reconstruction to that reading list.

[–] someone@hexbear.net 8 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

If any veteran No Man's Sky players haven't yet tried Abandoned mode, it totally transforms the experience. It removes all alien life from the universe, including most fauna. The only sentient thing in the universe is you. It's an incredibly eerie experience, even contemplative. It's entirely about scavenging what you can and hoping you get lucky.

[–] StillNoLeftLeft@hexbear.net 13 points 11 hours ago

About 60 pages in with Losurdos Stalin - history and critique of a black legend and for someone like me who has had to listen to decades of stalin hate and nothing else, reading this feels like stepping to a fountain of clarity.

once again ive been completely fucked over by linux "accessibility" talk

oh yeah use gnome box its accessible and easy for new users

what that actually means is there's no fucking settings in the ui, there's fewer than there used to be in forum posts i looked at to troubleshoot. thanks a lot dipshits, basic functionality like transferring files between the VM and host doesn't work out of the box and I can't tell what's wrong because you don't have any settings i can tinker with

i literally just need to run an exe on files and transfer them back, this has to be the majority of what people set up windows VMs for and your "uSeR-fRiEndLy" implementation can't just do that? why isn't SPICE and whatever the fuck i actually need (i still don't have it working!) just bundled with it you pillocks

Happy Death to America! I always were rooting for you guys to become a democracy someday; SNORT But I am glad you are settling down and accepting your nature as a fascist dictatorial plutocracy instead!

[–] ratboy@hexbear.net 14 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

This may be super obvious to everyone but me, but I feel like the shock and awe of the Trump administration (and the controlled op of the Dems) is intentionally done to break leftist unity and cement peoples positions as liberals to scare them away from communism/anarchism. Cuz with how things are going, I do not know what I would really say to a top-cop stan right now. Like, the "they were doing things to set this up for the Republicans" or "it would've been the same shit but slower" do not seem to hold up in the moment.

I am hopeful that more people are turning left but yikes. I know people that work at Planned Parenthood and they are so fucked. Not by December 2026, they are fucked RIGHT NOW, and there is nothing we can do about it. I'm terrified to go back to school for an MSW right now because who knows if I'll have a job by the end.

I know that during the first Russian Revolution there were still people who has faith in electoralism even though the Tsarist regime had been torturing people and using live ammunition to kill dissidents and yet the revolution still happened, it's still terrifying that it's going probably going to come down to that

[–] NephewAlphaBravo@hexbear.net 10 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

I don't think you need a hypothetical "it would have been the same basically" scenario, just look at how dem politicians are madder about zohran than they are about trump literally right now

[–] ratboy@hexbear.net 6 points 10 hours ago

Thats a good point, hopefully they keep going mask off in that way but after Bernie getting totally fucked over it felt like a lot of people maintained the "vote blue no matter who!" mentality, so I feel like this is just going to be a repeat. I am being hella doomer though, I know.

[–] Nakoichi@hexbear.net 8 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago) (1 children)

it's still terrifying that it's going probably going to come down to that

Revolution is by definition a nigh suicidal endeavor, and for some of us it will always come to that. But if we don't do it, if we don't risk ourselves, then the alternative is infinitely worse.

I'm just glad I don't have kids because I'm already committed. The only way out is through.

[–] ratboy@hexbear.net 4 points 10 hours ago

Absolutely, its just horrifying that it's ACTUALLY happening. But I guess that's the privilege of being American, especially a white one. I really need to figure out how to confidently use a gun for defense purposes ofc

God is both male and female; it was a toss up with adam and eve for who got which parts and could've just as easily been an mpreg seahorse situation sicko-wistful

Since they are now in the business of taking minor characters from the original Gundam series and turning them into major characters, I suggest the grandfather traveling with a small child from episode 5, who says "These things I keep in my pocket are known as coffee beans. After I get back to Earth I'm going to stay put no matter what happens to me or the boy."

Also, bring back impotently tossing your weapon in the general direction of the enemy mecha

Getting picked up at the airport by my brother is always fun. I'm always wondering what dumb bullshit he's going to believe now.

Yesterday, I learned about the testosterone and supplements he's taking. He was diagnosed with incredibly low testosterone but he's just (illegally?) buying some to take and he's taking seemingly random supplements based on vibes and whatever he learns online from, I assume, Facebook and Youtube. Then later when talking about the economy I said "everybody hates bankers" and he said "yeah big noses and small hats". Didn't want to push back too hard against him on that and other things because he gets angry easily and he already yells at our mom enough. I can't just call him a dumbass or a fascist dog every five minutes. My mom also told me he's beating his dog again. Family is truly the most precious thing.

Anyway, Happy 4th of July to all who celebrate and death to America.
