Hi empoc comrades! School has started back up for me which is fun, I enjoy school and I really like my classes this semester. Also I borrowed a physical copy of The Wretched of the Earth from one of my profs and I’ve started reading it. I’m enjoying it so far.

As always, this thread is em poc only!!

I think you can’t put any political stuff in bios. They wouldn’t let me put “Marxist-Leninist” (in Chinese) on mine. Posts are a different story though, some may get caught by moderation but then a lot of them won’t. I’ve certainly seen my fair share of commie posting

It sounds so good!

death to america

Hello em poc comrades! Today I bring a quote from the Samidoun Network on the ceasefire in Gaza and the hostage exchange, the "Flood of the Free".

Our strength and our unity comes from standing together against repression, and for liberation, not in allowing our enemies to cut us off from one another through a politics that seeks accommodation within genocidal imperialism, self-censorship and subordination. It is, at the core, the armed resistance, the Palestinian prisoners, and of course, the people of Gaza, who exposed Zionism and imperialism and brought down all of their military objectives, who are opening the doors of freedom for the heroic prisoners of the cause of Palestine, and who promise a Palestinian future that will be determined only by the people and not by its occupiers, invaders and enemies. This is an indelible stamp and a historical moment upon the road to liberation and return for all of Palestine, brought ever closer.

And from RNN Prisoners:

The current exchange deal, “Flood of the Free,” represents a milestone in our struggle and an added victory to the long march of liberation, affirming that the will for freedom is stronger than all the jailer’s chains.

Long Live Palestine! From the River to the Sea!

As always, this thread is em poc only.

done, hopefully it’s okay now

Decided to make a list of some Chinese creators I like on xiaohongshu for those of you who just downloaded the app and want some more content. This list is very much reflective of my personal interests (art, fashion, and diy) but I hope if anyone else has recommendations you will put them in the comments! I just ask that we please don’t put any primarily English speaking creators in here because this is in the interest of journeying outside the Anglosphere internet.

Fashion 服装/穿搭

(Short disclaimer about fashion content: most fashion influencers on XHS are very skinny and pale, unfoetunately there is not a lot of representation for diverse body types.)

OUCERN YANG — shared a lot of 新中式, aka “new chinese style”, which is a clothing style that has a bit of a following on XHS. It’s basically non-traditional clothing that incorporates a Chinese “style” to it.

想买新衣服的羊羊🐑 — does a lot of outfits incorporating hanfu elements without going for the full hanfu look. Classy and colorful style.

富山津渡vtg — feminine, vintage, maximalist outfits.

三文泽 — alternative outfits. Chinese alternative style is pretty distinct and I love it.

BLACKSTONE黑石 — Goth/punk/alternative store. I chose my favorite one but I actually follow quite a few Chinese clothing stores lol.

Art 艺术

画画的玉玉卿 — digital illustrator who works in the 古风 style that I see often on the Chinese internet, aka art that incorporates a lot of historical Chinese design language and motifs. She has a series where she draws Chinese historical artifacts as people.

画画的老张和面包 — impressive large and detailed marker drawings.

杉泽 — extremely finely detailed paintings often featuring Chinese stories and motifs.

阿社模型 — builds miniatures of buildings. Usually talks a little bit about the background behind the piece and who commissioned it in the accompanying narration.

翰德 内画艺术 — Chinese snuff bottle painting. If you haven’t heard of it, it’s where you take a tiny brush and paint inside a tiny bottle. Very fun.

赵恒逸 Henry — fantastic fineliner drawings.

DIY 手工

房灰灰 — lovely DIY home decor.

王执着 — very fun and interesting concepts for DIY furniture.

周周疯狂 DIY — more DIY modern style furniture.

ailehe — alternative clothing DIYs. For some reason DIY clothing are called “remakes” on XHS, I assume to differentiate it from DIY furniture and decor.

I could have linked more people here but this took a while to put together lol. Also if you like something, chances are you can go into the tags of the post and find more of that. I hope hexbears find something fun and enjoyable here!

I’m pleasantly surprised at the moderation myself, reported a few racist and unfriendly comments and most of them were taken down, plus I even got a message from XHS thanking me for reporting comments lol

If you’re located anywhere outside China it just says the country you’re in, not the city, and even for Chinese people it only shows the city they’re in if they’re located in a major one like Beijing or Shanghai (for a lot of people it just shows the province.) Idk to me it’s not a big deal if Xiaohongshu knows I’m in the Great Satan.

[–] khizuo@hexbear.net 55 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Yeah lol I saw some people from the US and Canada trying to pass themselves off as Chinese and being racist. Actually ridiculous. Thankfully the comments I reported got taken down.

I think it will be fine, I highly doubt Chinese posters will just roll over and let Westerners take over the app and completely change it. Things are pretty hectic rn but I’ll wait to see how things settle down.

My feed seems to like showing me Guizhou food.

Yeah, xhs does have some problems when it comes to casual bigotry and unchallenged reactionary biases. I actually hope that the leftist stuff on American social media like being against casual colorism and fatphobia bleeds over.

Edit: removed “cultural left” and the quotes because that implies that the issues of fatphobia and colorism don’t materially harm people, which they do on a daily basis. I shouldn’t have trivialized the issues like that.

Edit 2: I don’t want to imply that Chinese social media is uniquely bad about any of those issues, transphobia/colorism/fatphobia are rampant on Western social media and also I tend to find that Chinese social media is a lot… nicer? Like people generally won’t go onto a post just to post something transphobic like they might on Instagram, and you don’t have open fascists running around propagandizing.

Just saw a post by an American asking to see photos of Chinese cities and Chinese ppl in the comments were sending photos. Super fun!

Hello em poc comrades!! How are we all doing? Are we doing anything interesting this week? Any fun reads lately? I’ve been working on writing a communist fantasy series based inspired by the Chinese Revolution and a lot of my reading lately has been research for that, which also doubles as theory and history reading haha

As always, this thread is EM POC only!!!

@Imsomking@hexbear.net has gotten a fundraiser set up!!! Before clicking off this post, please read it in its entirety.

  1. She is currently in a lot of danger. You may remember from this post that she was half outed as trans. People around her are suspicious and are looking through her phone. She is terrified of police involvement if they find evidence that she is trans. On top of this, Iraq is going to be bombed again soon, this month.

  2. We don't have a lot of time. Since Trudeau resigned, the new Canadian PM is likely to be Poilievre, who is running on an extremely anti-immigrant policy. She needs to be in Canada before the next election happens, which could be as early as late March. This means we need to raise as much money as we can ASAP.

  3. We're shooting to raise $15,000 by the end of January. She needs this money to make the flight and to pay living expenses once she reaches Canada. Please, please donate if you are at all able. If you cannot donate, please share this fundraiser with people you know who can donate. Share it with your friends, family, on social media, on discord, anywhere.

  4. If you live in Canada, please reach out via DM. She will need additional support once she reaches Canada. We need a network of people to support her. Any help we can get, we need.

Thank you all for reading and for helping. This is incredibly urgent. We appreciate all of your support!!! 💚💚💚

Hello em_poc hexbears! I'm so sorry this thread is late today, totally my bad. I hope the new year has been good for you all so far! Any plans, goals, resolutions? I'm going to try to read more theory this year!

As always, this thread is EM POC ONLY

Hello all! @sweet_pecan@hexbear.net is taking a well-deserved break so I'll be posting the mega in the foreseeable future. How are we all doing? I truly can't believe it's almost 2025.

REMEMBER, EM POC ONLY!!!

I’ve had this band on repeat lately, so good.

A new week, a new mega! Welcome all disabled comrades. As always, we ask that in order to participate in the weekly megathread, one self-identifies as some form of disabled, which is broadly defined in the community sidebar:

"Disability" is an umbrella term which encompasses physical disabilities, emotional/psychiatric disabilities, neurodivergence, intellectual/developmental disabilities, sensory disabilities, invisible disabilities, and more. You do not have to have an official diagnosis to consider yourself disabled.

What is Disability Justice?

... In 2005, disabled queers and activists of color began discussing a “second wave” of disability rights. Many of these first conversations happened between Patty Berne and Mia Mingus, two queer disabled women of color who were incubated in progressive and radical movements which had failed to address ableism in their politics. Their visioning soon expanded to include others including Leroy Moore, Stacey Milbern, Eli Clare and Sebastian Margaret. These conversations evolved over time, at conferences, over the phone, formal and informal, one-on-one and in groups.

While every conversation is built on those that came before it, and it’s possible that there were others who were thinking and talking this way, it is our historical memory that these were the conversations that launched the framework we call disability justice.

Given the isolation enforced by ableism and capitalism, many of us have often found ourselves as leaders within our various communities, yet isolated from in-person community with other disabled people of color or queer or gender non-conforming crips. Many of us have found “liberated zones” online that celebrate our multiple identities. Disability justice is a developing framework that some call a movement. We are still identifying the “we,” touching each other through the echoes of each other’s hopes and words.

Given this early historical snapshot, we assert that disability justice work is largely done by individuals within their respective settings, with Sins Invalid and the Disability Justice Collectives based in NYC, Seattle, and Vancouver, B.C., being notable exceptions. These groups and organizing structures often come into being, fall apart and regroup with different names and configurations over time. Online groups like Sick & Disabled Queers can offer opportunities for people with disabilities to communicate and create new norms together. Some voices may emphasize a specific aspect of disability justice over another, which can be expected in all early movement moments. However, what has been consistent across disability justice - and must remain so - is the leadership of disabled people of color and of queer and gender non-conforming disabled people.

Disability justice activists, organizers, and cultural workers understand that able- bodied supremacy has been formed in relation to other systems of domination and exploitation. The histories of white supremacy and ableism are inextricably entwined, created in the context of colonial conquest and capitalist domination. One cannot look at the history of US slavery, the stealing of Indigenous lands, and US imperialism without seeing the way that white supremacy uses ableism to create a lesser/“other” group of people that is deemed less worthy/abled/smart/capable. A single-issue civil rights framework is not enough to explain the full extent of ableism and how it operates in society. We can only truly understand ableism by tracing its connections to heteropatriarchy, white supremacy, colonialism, and capitalism. The same oppressive systems that inflicted violence upon Black and brown communities for 500+ years also inflicted 500+ years of violence on bodies and minds deemed outside the norm and therefore “dangerous.”

Furthermore, racism, anti-Islamic beliefs, ableism and imperialism come together to feed us images of the “terrorist” as a dangerous Brown enemy... All this is compounded by the ways ableism, along with queer-hatred and the violence of the gender binary, label our bodies and communities as “deviant,” “unproductive,” and “invalid.”

A disability justice framework understands that:

  • All bodies are unique and essential.
  • All bodies have strengths and needs that must be met.
  • We are powerful, not despite the complexities of our bodies, but because of them.
  • All bodies are confined by ability, race, gender, sexuality, class, nation state, religion, and more, and we cannot separate them.

These are the positions from which we struggle. We are in a global system that is incompatible with life. The literal terrain of the world has shifted, along with a neo-fascist political terrain. Each day the planet experiences human-provoked mudslides, storms, fires, devolving air quality, rising sea levels, new regions experiencing freezing or sweltering temperatures, earthquakes, species loss and more, all provoked by greed-driven, human-made climate chaos. Our communities are often treated as disposable, especially within the current economic, political and environmental landscapes. There is no way to stop a single gear in motion — we must dismantle this machine.

Disability justice holds a vision born out of collective struggle, drawing upon legacies of cultural and spiritual resistance. Within a thousand underground paths we ignite small persistent fires of rebellion in everyday life. Disabled people of the global majority — Black and brown people — share common ground confronting and subverting colonial powers in our struggle for life and justice. There has always been resistance to all forms of oppression, as we know in our bones that there have also always been disabled people visioning a world where we flourish, a world that values and celebrates us in all our beauty.
