THE POLICE PROBLEM

3352 readers
845 users here now

The police problem is that police are policed by the police. Cops are accountable only to other cops, which is no accountability at all.

99.9999% of police brutality, corruption, and misconduct is never investigated, never punished, never makes the news, so it's not on this page.

When cops are caught breaking the law, they're investigated by other cops. Details are kept quiet, the officers' names are withheld from public knowledge, and what info is eventually released is only what police choose to release — often nothing at all.

When police are fired — which is all too rare — they leave with 'law enforcement experience' and can easily find work in another police department nearby. It's called "Wandering Cops."

When police testify under oath, they lie so frequently that cops themselves have a joking term for it: "testilying." Yet it's almost unheard of for police to be punished or prosecuted for perjury.

Cops can and do get away with lawlessness, because cops protect other cops. If they don't, they aren't cops for long.

The legal doctrine of "qualified immunity" renders police officers invulnerable to lawsuits for almost anything they do. In practice, getting past 'qualified immunity' is so unlikely, it makes headlines when it happens.

All this is a path to a police state.

In a free society, police must always be under serious and skeptical public oversight, with non-cops and non-cronies in charge, issuing genuine punishment when warranted.

Police who break the law must be prosecuted like anyone else, promptly fired if guilty, and barred from ever working in law-enforcement again.

    That's the solution.

Our definition of ‘cops’ is broad, and includes prison guards, probation officers, shitty DAs and judges, etc — anyone who has the authority to fuck over people’s lives, with minimal or no oversight.

RULES

Real-life decorum is expected. Please don't say things only a child or a jackass would say in person.

If you're here to support the police, you're trolling. Please exercise your right to remain silent.

Saying ~~cops~~ ANYONE should be killed lowers the IQ in any conversation. They're about killing people; we're not.

Please don't dox or post calls for harassment, vigilantism, tar & feather attacks, etc.

Please also abide by the instance rules.

It you've been banned but don't know why, check the moderator's log. If you feel you didn't deserve it, hey, I'm new at this and maybe you're right. Send a cordial PM, for a second chance.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement could run out of money as soon as next month amid the Trump administration’s ramped-up efforts to deport unauthorized immigrants.

While there are more than three months left in the fiscal year, one estimate has found that the agency is already $1 billion over budget, according to Axios. Legislators in both parties have raised concerns about the speed at which the agency is spending its funds, which may prompt President Donald Trump to seek additional funds from other agencies to support his deportation efforts.

MAGA complain about govt spending is off the walls.

MAGA create DOGE to cut a lot of "government waste".

MAGA waste taxpayer funds on parades and security theater.

MAGA has ICE arrest children at school, old people in court houses.

If you're hampering ICE right now, keep it up.

Ways to hamper:

  • If you see a bunch of masked people without ID or uniforms wearing tacticool gear and carrying guns, call 911. Maybe the police won't care, but at least you'll be wasting their time, because they will have to roll out in force to check it out. Make fascists fight other fascists.
  • If you can open carry, do it. A dozen Gestapo are going to turn tail and flee when confronted by a crowd of armed citizens. If you can't open carry, bring "sporting equipment." Golf, baseball, and hockey are very popular.
  • Be loud and angry. "Being peaceful" and "being loud and angry" are not mutually exclusive.
  • Take video, and then post it. Invest in a dashcam for bonus points.
  • Even if you can't (or don't want to) do the above, show up. Your presence gives other citizens more power.
  • If you can't show up, that's also okay. Make room in your home for people who may need shelter. Have first aid and food/water at the ready. Most of the efforts required to win a war are not front line troops. Observe, look for opportunities to resist, and take them.

“1bn over budget” seems like they have already run out of money?

[–] thefartographer@lemm.ee 48 points 1 day ago

People and organizations operating in billions don't run out of money. They just wait to "secure more funding."

The scary part is that with this kind of sliding towards fascism ......

They'll probably come up with some weird obscure, illegal, undemocratic way to fund their ICE machine .... taking over property, taking control of assets, seizing bank accounts, just generally stealing money from those they can to keep doing what they're doing.

Look at Nazi Germany ... we keep referring to that history ... it keeps happening ... we point it out ... no one does anything.

Nazi Germany initially got direct help and financing from industrial and corporate Europe and North America to get on its feet. How the hell do you think Germany who was forbidden from building a military got to build a massive invasion force in front of everyone's eyes for years before the start of the first invasion?

Once Nazi Germany got enough power, financing and control of everything ... they just started outright stealing everyone's money, property, bank accounts and assets starting with Jews they persecuted ... then they started moving down the line to more and more people, companies and corporations to steal from everywhere.

[–] lath@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I mean the US police agencies already have a law in place that allows them to outright steal everyone's property and have been abusing it for some time now.

[–] Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 day ago

But therein also lies the difference. And I say this not to deride your absolutely necessary call for action, but to offer a measure of hope; Nazi Germany was smart enough to maintain good relationships with the rest of the world until they were ready to start pressing ahead with their plans full speed. Trump's government has the same goals, but fails to even clear the disastrously low bar of competence set by the Nazis. Where the Nazis built international relations, Trump is tearing them down. Where the Nazis used borrowed money and borrowed time to build up their economy, Trump is destroying what little domestic production America had in his hamfisted attempts to make more.

The Nazis got away with it for so long because, ultimately, they were popular, and they were - seemingly - making Germany better. Trump has entirely failed to replicate their success in this regard. Nothing on the scale of the No Kings protests ever happened in Nazi Germany.

The American people can win this. It is not too late to reclaim your country.

with this kind of sliding towards fascism

You are already there, there is no 'kind of' about it.

I think they meant 'kind of' as in 'type of', not as in 'sort of'.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 35 points 1 day ago (1 children)

And there is the part that both left and right kind of ignored; deporting a thousand people costs millions, deporting a million people costs billions. Deporting 20 million people wrecks your economy for both cost and now-missing labor.

It's economic suicide that any sane leader would have seen coming from a suns distance away, but here we are with cheeto

The way the Nazis did it was they at first had the Jews pay for the privilege of being extradited, with most of what they owned.

Later on their tactics evolved a bit more and more.

DOGE? ....hello? Is DOGE around? ... Hello?

[–] apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world 27 points 1 day ago
