On this day in 1976, the Soweto Uprising began in South Africa after the government mandated that Afrikaans be taught in school, leading to demonstrations by more than 20,000 black schoolchildren, hundreds of whom were killed by police.

The Afrikaans Medium Decree of 1974 mandated all black schools to use Afrikaans and English in equal amounts as languages of instruction. Afrikaans was strongly associated with apartheid (prominent anti-apartheid activist Desmond Tutu called it "the language of the oppressor"), and this decree was widely resented.

At first, resistance to the measure was scattered - on April 30th, the students of Orlando West Junior School went on strike, and other schools began to follow suit. Students eventually formed an Action Committee, later known as the Soweto Students' Representative Council, which organized a mass meeting on June 13th to develop a cohesive strategy of protest.

On the morning on June 16th, 10,000-20,000 students walked out of their schools to a mass rally, carrying signs reading "Down with Afrikaans", "Viva Azania", and "If we must do Afrikaans, Vorster must do Zulu".

The protest turned violent after students killed a trained dog that the police had sicced on them, causing the police to open fire. Among the first students to be murdered were the 15-year-old Hastings Ndlovu and the 12-year-old Hector Pieterson (shown, photo by Sam Nzima).

Social reformer Dr. Melville Edelstein was beaten to death by the mob, a sign around his neck proclaiming, "Beware Afrikaans is the most dangerous drug for our future". 23 people died on the first day in Soweto, and hundreds more were killed in the following weeks.

Emergency clinics were swamped with injured and bloody children. Police requested for the hospital to provide a list of all victims with bullet wounds, however the doctors refused, recording bullet wounds as abscesses.

The violence led to widespread riots and sympathy protests throughout South Africa, including white students from the University of the Witwatersrand. In remembrance of these events, June 16th is now a public holiday in South Africa known as Youth Day.

My department has lost half its engineers in the last 6 months to resignations. Three had previously complained about the senior making unprofessional and inappropriate comments. the senior was kept on and now most of our team is gone. Nothing's ever getting done around here now

I need to lose like 25 kilos if I ever want to be loved by anybody

One of the most unintentionally funny things that happened to me was when I was opening up to a partner about my struggles with addiction. Partner asked if I'd ever "Foured" drugs. I had no idea what they meant by that, and they didn't have the drug literacy to even guess what it meant. Then it hit me the next day when I was at work. IV. Four.

friendshipI often wonder how more neurotypical people view friendship and conceive of it. I'm very in-the-weeds about reciprocity, commonality, being intentional, and really there's just a lot of logistics and stuff that I feel has to be managed.

I'd love a friendship where we just agree to keep in touch and be present for each other and that's the point, but I don't think that it is the point for a lot of people.

If I thought I could take things less seriously without the friendships falling through, I would. But the slowly widening gaps between texts, the shorter responses, I see the patterns from a mile away. It breaks my heart regardless.

I just imagine it's easier for most people. Walk in, talk to a group of strangers, maybe a lingering thought about a smell, or something, but way fewer nerves involved.

You and @peppersky@hexbear.net should be friends! You both want really close intense friends and you've both posted about wanting friends.

The people i find the most strange are the ones who say β€œoh this supplement has completely changed my life im now a completely different person!”, like how does taking a magnesium supplement do anything to that level. Ive even seen the same with b12, like unless you’re vegan you arent deficient in b12 its in everything carnists eat. Turmeric, aloe vera, fish oil, I might as well just pray to allah instead of taking those.

99% of the time it's lies, on the off chance it's true they had some actual health problem that it fixed by coincidence. same as people who say a diet fixed their depression or whatever.

Sent my semi regular check in text to an old friend and just get back that they're at the hospital with no context so now I get to worry until they text me back again. Or maybe she just gets her prescription filled there. Let's go with that until I hear back I guess.

Yup, it was layoffs today. Thankfully I survived them. Apparently we're losing contracts because of the trump admin cancelling shit.

The Israel-Iran war is fascinating to me because the distance involved means all either side can really do is launch long-range missiles at each other and they're doing things like firing probing missiles to test each other's air defenses.

The face of modern warfare was predicted by, of all things, the Super Nintendo game Metal Marines.

Summer’s going to be over before I know it and I’ll be back to being unemployed and being accused of laziness because porky is a picky guy, and why the fuck would he hire a loser like me when he has thousands of experienced professionals to choose from?

I’m not lazy, I’m just incompetent. Not my fault everyone is just better than me, I try but someone beats me every time…and even if I was the only one, porky would just not hire me because why would he hire a loser like me?

[–] DoomBloomDialectic@hexbear.net 13 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

Porky measures your value according to completely anti-human & anti-life metrics, holding yourself to his standards when you think & talk about your self worth does yourself a disservice, as well as the people around you. You are better than the wretched capitalist system. Also....

I’m not lazy, I’m just incompetent. Not my fault everyone is just better than me, I try but someone beats me every time…and even if I was the only one, porky would just not hire me because why would he hire a loser like me?

Porky will literally hire his incompetent failnephew without question or vetting, just because xi this shit is not a reflection of your or anyone else's intrinsic value, trust.

Living through the 3rd year of WW3 and seeing things escalate while having to go to work and function as a normal human being is completely absurd. How the fuck does everyone continue to live

@GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net the worldbuilding ideas would be for a setting ive worked on on and off for years (industrialized fantasy with weird fiction and communist themes) so doing actual serious work on it would involve wading through/decoding my scattered, nerodivergent-ass google docs sadly. just the thought of it gives me anxiety!! but the ideas i was having were for big picture creation myth and cosmology and metaphysics shit, which does lend itself more to vaguery & brain vomit so maybe i should give it a whirl anyway thinkin-lenin

it's funny, you and i are kind of the opposite - the type of details you stress over w/ worldbuilding is the kind of shit i really struggle with. whenever i think about realistic logistics around climate, geography, etc on a micro level, my brain derobes itself of its burdensome, chafing wrinkles and my eyes lose their spark and i become clueless

My partner has been pouring their heart and soul into their company and work for the past 5 years, and it's been going well enough for them to live comfortably off until now. It's come to the point where AI has completely fucked the entire industry for the forseeable future. Their main client, which I assume is a pretty large company, recently announced that they will go full AI for this particular kind of work, and their subcontractors (i.e. my partner) will from now on work mainly as glorified post-editors for their AI's excrement, of course for a fraction of their previous pay. I'm assuming they're trying to smoke out all the humans from their workforce to pump up the next quarter's results, and I'm fairly confident that it will bite them in the ass within a few years tops. But a few years is still a long ass time to work for peanuts with dubious job security...

Economically it's not even that big of a problem for us, we can manage fine on my salary alone, but the worst part is that my partner is super depressed and exhausted over all of this shit. It's gotta be pretty god damn rough to have to walk away from something you've been working hard at for so long because it's turned into a complete dead end by corporate bullshit. But the fact of the matter is that the pay is just too fucking ass. Yeah yeah follow your passion and all that, but this shit is simply unsustainable. They're working longer hours than I do for like a third of my monthly salary at this point. "Just getting another job" isn't exactly a realistic option either given the current job market. I guess the best idea is to wait out the AI bubble and get back into it once the piggies realise that humans are kinda alright for this kind of creative work after all. What a bullshit situation, fuck AI and every dumbass idiot C-whatever-O that buys into the hype.

[–] Dimmer06@hexbear.net 14 points 9 hours ago
