On this day in 1976, the Soweto Uprising began in South Africa after the government mandated that Afrikaans be taught in school, leading to demonstrations by more than 20,000 black schoolchildren, hundreds of whom were killed by police.

The Afrikaans Medium Decree of 1974 mandated all black schools to use Afrikaans and English in equal amounts as languages of instruction. Afrikaans was strongly associated with apartheid (prominent anti-apartheid activist Desmond Tutu called it "the language of the oppressor"), and this decree was widely resented.

At first, resistance to the measure was scattered - on April 30th, the students of Orlando West Junior School went on strike, and other schools began to follow suit. Students eventually formed an Action Committee, later known as the Soweto Students' Representative Council, which organized a mass meeting on June 13th to develop a cohesive strategy of protest.

On the morning on June 16th, 10,000-20,000 students walked out of their schools to a mass rally, carrying signs reading "Down with Afrikaans", "Viva Azania", and "If we must do Afrikaans, Vorster must do Zulu".

The protest turned violent after students killed a trained dog that the police had sicced on them, causing the police to open fire. Among the first students to be murdered were the 15-year-old Hastings Ndlovu and the 12-year-old Hector Pieterson (shown, photo by Sam Nzima).

Social reformer Dr. Melville Edelstein was beaten to death by the mob, a sign around his neck proclaiming, "Beware Afrikaans is the most dangerous drug for our future". 23 people died on the first day in Soweto, and hundreds more were killed in the following weeks.

Emergency clinics were swamped with injured and bloody children. Police requested for the hospital to provide a list of all victims with bullet wounds, however the doctors refused, recording bullet wounds as abscesses.

The violence led to widespread riots and sympathy protests throughout South Africa, including white students from the University of the Witwatersrand. In remembrance of these events, June 16th is now a public holiday in South Africa known as Youth Day.

Living through the 3rd year of WW3 and seeing things escalate while having to go to work and function as a normal human being is completely absurd. How the fuck does everyone continue to live

My partner has been pouring their heart and soul into their company and work for the past 5 years, and it's been going well enough for them to live comfortably off until now. It's come to the point where AI has completely fucked the entire industry for the forseeable future. Their main client, which I assume is a pretty large company, recently announced that they will go full AI for this particular kind of work, and their subcontractors (i.e. my partner) will from now on work mainly as glorified post-editors for their AI's excrement, of course for a fraction of their previous pay. I'm assuming they're trying to smoke out all the humans from their workforce to pump up the next quarter's results, and I'm fairly confident that it will bite them in the ass within a few years tops. But a few years is still a long ass time to work for peanuts with dubious job security...

Economically it's not even that big of a problem for us, we can manage fine on my salary alone, but the worst part is that my partner is super depressed and exhausted over all of this shit. It's gotta be pretty god damn rough to have to walk away from something you've been working hard at for so long because it's turned into a complete dead end by corporate bullshit. But the fact of the matter is that the pay is just too fucking ass. Yeah yeah follow your passion and all that, but this shit is simply unsustainable. They're working longer hours than I do for like a third of my monthly salary at this point. "Just getting another job" isn't exactly a realistic option either given the current job market. I guess the best idea is to wait out the AI bubble and get back into it once the piggies realise that humans are kinda alright for this kind of creative work after all. What a bullshit situation, fuck AI and every dumbass idiot C-whatever-O that buys into the hype.

What the hell is wrong with American elections?? The way I see Americans talk about the New York Mayoral election makes it seem like it's happening next week. But that shit isn't untill November?? Wait until October to start your campaign dawg

[–] Dimmer06@hexbear.net 11 points 2 hours ago

The Democratic primary for the mayoral election is next week.

[–] GladimirLenin@hexbear.net 4 points 1 hour ago

They need to leave enough time between primaries and the actual election for ratfucking in the case the democrats don't get their preferred candidate.

[–] starkillerfish@hexbear.net 5 points 1 hour ago

It’s because of the primaries next week, which is the election within the Democratic Party to decide their nominee for the actual election

I think the Minnesota cops being fooled by a guy wearing a mask is proof that Hitman games can be realistic.

[–] keepcarrot@hexbear.net 9 points 3 hours ago

Fuck landlords. Generally, yes, but especially today

[–] Moss@hexbear.net 4 points 3 hours ago (5 children)

Ok hexbears how do I stop being extremely anxious about the state of the world?

[–] Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net 3 points 17 minutes ago

Try and do something that makes it a little better. Join an org. Get involved with your community even if it's just joining a community garden or something.

[–] decaptcha@hexbear.net 4 points 45 minutes ago

Make yourself too busy and tired to be anxious. An easy thing to say, at least. And in my case it's not from organizing or building communism or anything rad, just working too much at a new job. Not sure I recommend my particular strategy, actually

[–] peppersky@hexbear.net 3 points 1 hour ago

Wondering the same

[–] thirstyskyline@hexbear.net 4 points 1 hour ago

Dunno trying the same thing, feeling very trapped overall

Just trying to wind down by reading and chilling though I find it hard to do any of that when I feel in an anxious plugged in state all the time and it's been frying my brain.

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 5 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

be so miserable that you can't be around people or participate in society, with no hope of assistance or improvement. can't worry about the future if you don't think you have one.

doomer

[–] Moss@hexbear.net 3 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Mm yeah I don't want to do that

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 3 points 2 hours ago

Walked over to see the lib protest on saturday by the Capitol and it was very lib, as expected, but I did get to see a vulture fly right by and perch on a branch above me while walking on the bike trail so that was pretty cool

[–] Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net 2 points 16 minutes ago

Lmao look at the bald dweeb! farquaad-point

walking down the embarcadero in SF at midnight with my friend coming home from the panchiko show and we walk across a group of 6-8 dudes in their 20s that I instantly clocked as programmers. As we near them, they were talking about playing the "penis" game but with the word "vinegar"

They proceeded to take turns shouting "vinegar" increasingly louder into the night and laughing their asses off from because they were "cleverly" saying the n-word

Fuck this city omg

I've been struggling with moderate alcoholism for the past several months, with many attempts to quit or cut back. I'm currently 70 hours sober, and I'm trying to use alcohol-free sparkling water and Street Fighter to establish new habits. I suck at fighting games, but I've been wanting to pick up a new hobby and the newest game in the series is pretty fun.

[–] ratboy@hexbear.net 3 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Hell yeah get it! I highly recommend the flavored Liquid Death cans, they are so good and are like 16 oz I think. Had one at a bar and it felt right

Nice, I'll try one of those! Are they carbonated? Fizzy, bubbly drinks have been decent substitutes for hard seltzers in my experience.

forlorn at the prospect of US joining the conflict -- obviously at the cosigning of evil, but ultimately just highlighting that nothing at all has changed since 2003. no hugging, no learning, just cascading grotesqueries. fuck bush, fuck trump, fuck cuomo, fuck biden, fuck clinton, fuck kamala, fuck the zionists, fuck starmer. gramsci says we are between worlds, but the interregnum of monsters now nears 100 years of his writing. to what end! the ancien regime will be just a brief prologue to the endless cruelty of capital, an endless interlude.

Saw a post by Jason Hickle and did the "Hinkle Stinkle" rhyme to remind me that Hickle is indeed the good one. I forget who taught me that one on here but thank you for that

[–] spudnik@hexbear.net 9 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

Idk if it was me or not, but that is 100% the only way I remember it as well.

Edit: because I am an absolute nerd I checked, and it was me. I will now be claiming credit!
