I think he means "tired of the pushback and profit loss from actively bribing the system into becoming the shadow POTUS running the world behind the scenes".
How else could he attempt to advance to Mars Colonization, his lifelong dream as someone with a God-Iron-Man-Savior complex, during his lifetime?
He knows with the current progress rate he could help pave the way to Mars for humanity, but not live the dream himself, or take full credit for that achievement. And we know just how "selfless" he is.
As he should be. All billionaires should be afraid.
Any chance he got all the data and access that he actually wanted, so now he's good?
Time to slink back into the shadows and re-emerge richer around the time of the next election.
As sad as it sounds, we'll also have to watch his 13 specifically IVF male children, which he calls "legion", to see what they do with pieces of his fortune as they grow older. He reads dystopian sci-fi media and wants to build that.
I'm keeping Vivian Wilson out of that nonsense because she has publicly disowned him and is awesome.

OR...hear me out...Trump is sick of him and wants him gone (because two egos that large cannot coexist in the same space indefinitely) and this is the cover story.
OR...Elon has already accomplished 99.9% of what he wanted by gaining access to all the data he wanted and further embedding SpaceX, Starlink, etc., into government contracts.
OR...some mix of all of the above.

In all honesty, if he left politics and stayed out of it I wouldn't my just leaving him to his harem and 40k.
America's democracy is in dire enough straits that we don't need to be stuck fighting the world's richest man on top of the whole mechanism of government. If he'll get and stay gone, I say leave him to it.
On the other hand, he's rich enough that he can jump back in at any time and go back to fucking our democracy and he's proven to be impulsive and mercurial, willing to throw his lot in with fascists because he got trolled on Twitter over how skin deep his progressive credentials are.
Is this his planned escape route after he's already gutted and skullfucked government programs that benefit lower income and working class people, environment, etc? Also after he's redirected government funding, tax money, to his businesses?
I'm not saying I have evidence there's truth to this, but I wouldn't be surprised. If he does go away, much of the public will forget really quickly. His shittiness and his obvious nazi salutes should never be forgotten.
