Republican Rep. Chuck Kopp of Alaska, which shares a border with the Yukon and is separated from the contiguous U.S. by Canada, says the state doesn’t support the president’s trade war and annexation bid against Canada.

He has proposed a joint resolution in the state legislature that would affirm Canada’s sovereignty and recognize the enduring, centuries-old ties between Alaska and Canada.

Amazingly smart for a Republican.

They are trying to get Canada to stop charging road tolls on US products travelling through Canada to get to them

This is a prerequisite to any trade deal and their threat of just shipping it by boat from California to Alaska didn’t work

[–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 16 points 13 hours ago

Trump invading alaska is a possibility I didnt consider

[–] SocialMediaRefugee@lemmy.world 19 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

"May you live in interesting times."

This is too fucking "interesting".

[–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 5 points 13 hours ago

That's why its curse you say to your enemies

[–] Wilco@lemm.ee 28 points 19 hours ago (3 children)

Alaska could join Canada couldn't it? Damn ... it may be worth getting an Alaskan mailing address.

[–] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 11 points 13 hours ago

My bet is that Putin demands Alaska as a token of good faith in order for HitlerPig to join the new alliance with Russia, China, and North Korea, and HitlerPig gives it to him. He'll also give Taiwan to China for the same reason.

[–] bluegreenwookie@bookwormstory.social 10 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

I don't see the US allowing that. We have oil reserves there

[–] Dragomus@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

This is why Trump wants Greenland, to balance off the loss of oil and other reserves when Putin claims Alaska again, like he said he will.

[–] _cryptagion@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 18 hours ago

Sure, as long as it could get through the US military. There's a lot of presence up there, including a lot of nuclear missiles and units related to missile defense. Not to mention, the vast untapped resources the Trump admin and republicans want to sell to corporations. The federal government couldn't afford to just let Alaska go. It's more likely a state like California or Texas would be allowed to secede from the Union than Alaska.

[–] MataVatnik@lemmy.world 7 points 16 hours ago

Probably cause they know they'd be one of the first states to get badly economically blockaded if Trumo tries to start shit.

[–] selkiesidhe@lemm.ee 81 points 1 day ago (4 children)

I'll be honest; didn't expect that from Alaska but then again they're sorta up there on their own, doing whatever...

Good though. Good. Maybe when the West Coast secedes and founds its own (superior!) country, well let Alaska join us. Maybe.

[–] RedPostItNote@lemmy.world 38 points 1 day ago

I live in Washington/BC and I can tell you, Alaska would starve if Canada didn’t allow use of its roads and facilities. I’m not surprised they sided with Canada and the west coast and east coast will too. Trump is a fucking moron.

[–] PalmTreeIsBestTree@lemmy.world 25 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Alaska is a very different kind of conservative state. They like the ability to do whatever they want as long as it benefits them even if it goes against the national Republican agenda.

[–] Ledericas@lemm.ee 5 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

they are also far removed from the main GOP in the states, so they are less affected by thier craziness.

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 5 points 15 hours ago (1 children)
[–] RamblingPanda@lemmynsfw.com 1 points 13 hours ago

Don't use that word, it's horrible!

[–] SocialMediaRefugee@lemmy.world 2 points 15 hours ago

GOP leadership can't be bothered to visit

[–] Bleys@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Also economically it’s beneficial for Alaska to be a unique US state in terms of tourism and resource offerings. If Canada joined the US, Alaska loses a big aspect of their unique identity to BC/Yukon/NT.

[–] CowsLookLikeMaps@lemmy.ca 2 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

If Canada joined the US

No, let me stop you right there.

[–] Bleys@lemmy.world 1 points 12 hours ago

I live in Canada, you’re preaching to the choir

[–] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 2 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago) (2 children)

So they aren't idiots. Far as I can tell with MAGATs, they do stupid things even if it catches themselves on fire.

[–] drunkpostdisaster@lemmy.world 3 points 16 hours ago

Well, we got places like Wassila (AKA Mobile Alaska) that have entirely drank the koolaid. One week there and you will be thanking god for fentanyl. Its not as bad but we still got crazies.

We got mostly republicans and office yet we also got Ranked Choice Voting which the GOP opposes.

[–] PalmTreeIsBestTree@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

Alaskans even have a form of UBI through the oil industry. It’s a state with more pragmatic people running it I suppose.

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 5 points 23 hours ago

we can cut them off badly... that's the only reason they are pretending to be kind

[–] j0ester@lemmy.world 4 points 19 hours ago

Then they shouldn’t have been MAGA aholes.

[–] phoenixarise@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

Sarah Palin is not invited. 😉

[–] krebssteven@lemmy.world 152 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Imagine Alaska seceding to Canada because the angry orange turd couldn't help himself 😂

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 71 points 1 day ago (1 children)

"We can have Canada as a 51st state!"

"Now we're down to 49 states, you dumb ass."

[–] MadMadBunny@lemmy.ca 45 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Puerto Rico still tries to enter the chat…

[–] NatakuNox@lemmy.world 20 points 23 hours ago (3 children)

Puerto Rico has been removed from the chat and blocked... Admin notes just has the word "brown!"

[–] Klear@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

Puerto Rico has been replaced with a random journalist

OPSEC clean!

[–] longjohnjohnson@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's my understanding that it's been put to a vote several times there and they've chosen not to join the states. Something about taxes going up.

[–] match@pawb.social 26 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You've been misinformed by a hostile media. There have been 5 referendums since 2012 about statehood and they've all been in favor of statehood (if not by much), and the subsequent House bills to introduce the measure have all been stalled or killed in committee.

[–] longjohnjohnson@lemmy.ml 9 points 23 hours ago

I was unaware of this. Thanks for the info!

[–] j0ester@lemmy.world 1 points 19 hours ago
[–] DaddleDew@lemmy.world 46 points 1 day ago (1 children)

NGL, I can imagine Russia making a move for it and Trump letting them do it.

[–] longjohnjohnson@lemmy.ml 13 points 1 day ago

We'll have Palin there, looking out her window, to let us know the second she sees the Russians.

[–] Itdidnttrickledown@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

Daddy putin wouldn't like that. I would to move to alaska before that deal went down. I already want to jack up this broken ass country and swap in a new hemi v8 country

[–] anomnom@sh.itjust.works 1 points 17 hours ago

Makes me want to move there quick to get in on the action.

Don't you mean Gimanada?

[–] SocialMediaRefugee@lemmy.world 3 points 15 hours ago

I prefer the cold over heat and hiking so if Alaska becomes part of Canada, hmmmm.

Downside, so many frigg'n mosquitoes.

[–] KnightontheSun@lemmy.world 22 points 1 day ago

Washington too, please!
