Summary

Five Republican Minnesota state senators plan to introduce a bill classifying "Trump Derangement Syndrome" (TDS) as a mental illness, defining it as "acute paranoia" about Trump's presidency.

The bill argues TDS causes hysteria, verbal hostility, and aggression toward Trump supporters.

Critics argue this represents a dangerous politicization of mental health diagnoses that could suppress political expression.

The bill will be read Monday before the Minnesota Senate Health and Human Services Committee, where Democrats hold a narrow majority.

Why do they even need this? There's already "oppositional defiant disorder", etc. It serves the exact same purpose. Psychiatry has always been about hegemonic control.

[–] cultsuperstar@lemmy.world 1 points 9 minutes ago (1 children)

Because they want to distinctly label people as anti Trump. Just being opposition isn't enough. If they can do that, they'll probably start making us wear something so Trumpers know. Sound familiar? Obviously this is worst case scenario, but with the way things are going, I'm not putting anything past Republicans.

[–] ReluctantMuskrat@lemmy.world 1 points 6 minutes ago

Correct. Trumpers are ok with you having democrat derangment syndrome... that might lead to you storming the capital but that's totally ok!

I propose we make CBS a mental illness (Chronic Bootlicking Syndrome), people who have CBS may inhibit the following symptoms:

  1. Blind obedience to authority
  2. Lack of critical thinking skills
  3. Inability to think independently
  4. Blind anger and agressesion towards those who are weaker
  5. Inability to feel sympathy and/or regret
  6. Lack of empathy and/or love
  7. Inability to form genuine interpersonal relationships with ones peers (that are not based on coercion or fear)
  8. Forming strong parasitic relationships with authority figures to the point of obsession
  9. Delusional visions of the world including the past, present, and future
  10. Delusional visions of ones place in society, specifically the idea that they will gain leverage in society by bowing down to authority
  11. Severe lack of class consciousness to the point that they feel closer to the capitalists then their peers (workers)

This list is not complete, people who have CBS are highly advised to read some theory and maybe try feeling human emotions. However if left untreated for too long it may become terminal and kill any ounce of humanity left in the person. As of now there is no cure, however therapy is a great treatment (effectiveness may vary).

This is the most dystopian shit I've read this week. Impressive, all things considered.

[–] buzz86us@lemmy.world 19 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

So explaining reality to a Trump supporter is Trump Derangement Syndrome? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

[–] samus12345@lemm.ee 11 points 6 hours ago

Unironically yes.

“The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.”

[–] qarbone@lemmy.world 40 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

The senators who proposed this should be removed from office. This is beyond a farce.

[–] P1nkman@lemmy.world 7 points 14 hours ago

And what Trump is doing it not? The only laws that still exist, is the ones that repress people they don't like.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 10 points 11 hours ago

The real mental illness here is the "Trump following syndrome", where people still support him despite what he does.

[–] secretlyaddictedtolinux@lemmy.world -4 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

I would say this would make the DSM of mental illnesses arbitrary, but the DSM also contains at least 1 mental illness based on a Greek mythological character.

Much of the mental health industry is an intersection of religion, new age mumbo gumbo, a dash of science, capitalism, and what society finds socially acceptable. It was only in recent decades that homosexuality and female hysteria (which required clitoral stimulation as the cure) were removed from the hocus pocus DSM, which pretends to have scientific rigor and never has and likely never will.

[–] technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Amazing to see these basic facts downvoted.

never underestimate the rage of cult members threatened with the cognitive dissonance of all their cherished moronic views being wrong. the cult of mental health has spoken: down-vote

[–] DogEarBookmark@reddthat.com 7 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Since when do senators diagnose shit?

[–] Hideakikarate@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

I mean, insurance companies refuse treatments for patients, flying in the face of what a doctor recommends, and I'm fairly certain there isn't a lot of medical reasoning behind their decisions. If insurance companies can practice medicine without a license, then senators are equally unqualified.

[–] secretlyaddictedtolinux@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

In defense of insurance companies, medical costs are astronomical because doctor professional associations protect doctor wages. Why do I need a 400 an hour doctor to prescribe an antibiotic for a bladder infection? Many people want to doctors and don't get admitted into medical school. Instead of delegating less difficult responsibilities to this interested group of people by creating a more tiered system of expertise, the AMA hoards all the decisions for the doctors, fleeces and extorts the public, then scapegoats the insurance industry which is trying to reduce unfair costs while taking a slice of the parasite pie. The gullible public eats the slop right up, blaming insurance companies, never batting an eye at the exploitation of the public by doctors.

[–] ubergeek@lemmy.today 3 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

And this is exactly why those "red flag" laws are a bad idea.

For example, the state can determine anyone who hates Trump is not able to procure a firearm....

[–] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 11 points 13 hours ago

I've always thought Trump Derangement Syndrome better described MAGATurds. THEY are the ones who are absurdly and inexplicably in love with him, no matter how poorly he treats them.

[–] gravitas_deficiency@sh.itjust.works 115 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

This is a test. They’re seeing if they can outlaw objecting to Dear Leader by legally classifying it as a dangerous psychological condition.

This is not about mental health diagnoses. This is the pregame to the American edition of the night of the long knives.

[–] NotLemming@lemm.ee 48 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

This is what Putin does to Russians who criticise him, eg making anti-ukraine war stickers or graffiti.

This is also what used to happen to women who wanted to get a divorce or generally wouldn't obey her father or husband. They called it hysteria and thought that it was because of the 'wandering womb', yep they thought her womb was wandering around her body, woo woo.

[–] gravitas_deficiency@sh.itjust.works 29 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Look up what they did to JFK’s sister. It’s fucking wild. It was considered a “reasonable treatment” at the time.

[–] El_Azulito@lemmy.world 14 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Geez, all of this because Obama just had to wear that tan suit in 2014.

that bougie dijon mustard he used on his hotdog.

[–] HawlSera@lemm.ee 21 points 15 hours ago

So Gender Dysphoria is bullshit, but TDS requires tax payer money thrown at it...

Shut up GOP you're drunk

[–] Franklin@lemmy.ca 28 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago) (1 children)

the fucked up part is if there is a president after Trump it will take decades to fix the damage he did in 2 months.

we're still suffering from Regan's decisions

[–] NikkiDimes@lemmy.world 20 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago) (1 children)

There will be a president after him. He cannot live forever, thank fuck.

Whether that president is actually democratically elected is yet to be seen.

[–] CheeseNoodle@lemmy.world 4 points 9 hours ago

Honestly if the US doesn't have a democratically elected president in 4 years its not going to have a president ever, given the last 2 months I doubt there would be anything left to be president of if Trump manages to keep himself in powr for however long he has left to live.

[–] Fingolfinz@lemmy.world 171 points 22 hours ago (22 children)

Never, ever forgive magats for bringing this to our country. Don’t let them squirm out of it or try to play dumb, this is exactly what they wanted. Trump is the symptom and they are the disease

TDS was always a sham, a way to write off all concerns and protests of Trump. "Oh don't listen to them, those who question Fearless Leader only do so because they're insane. He is perfect and loves everybody"

[–] dryfter@lemm.ee 15 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

I can't tell if they're joking or are dead serious anymore.

I have a mental illness -- 2 of them actually, Major Depressive Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Possibly will get PTSD thrown in that mix soon too. Therapists and Psychiatrists use a little book called the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, DSM-5 for short. Unless they can convince the APA to include TDS in the DSM-6 then it's not a mental illness.

This is nothing but thought policing and a way to label someone with mental illness when they really don't have one. It's also causing all of the work that's been done recently by NAMI, MHA, and AFSP to try to end the stigma surrounding mental illness to be set back to the era of mental institutions (something that their beloved Reagan did away with).

But what the hell, might as well add it to the DSM-6 and slap TDS on top of all my other mental illnesses 🤷🏻‍♂️

[–] secretlyaddictedtolinux@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

I would argue that defining mental illness by the DSM-6 is a really bad way of defining mental illness.

The same DSM previously said homosexuality and female hysteria were illnesses, and still causes black people to be diagnosed more frequently as anti-social because black children get labeled with conduct disorders more often that white children (quite likely due to racism), and still categories people as narcissistic based on a Greek myth. The DSM is so malleable and fluid because it was never based on science to begin with. Yes, these writers are oracles and soothsayers with Ph.D's, but anyone with enough time and money can buy credits for such an unrigorous "scientific" discipline.

It's really mostly only useful as an insurance billing tool, and one day there will be universal health care and hopefully the whole glossary of tripe can be forgotten, stored in the rare books section next to the textbooks about phrenology.

[–] uuldika@lemmy.ml 26 points 15 hours ago

they're both. they're trolling us, and they're deadly serious. it's the "haha jk unless" approach to manifesting Overton window shifts with irony, aka meme magic.

my comment here analyzes it more: https://lemmy.ml/comment/17320556

It's a social construct. Much of the population wont understand due to lacking education and deficient knowledge base. Hopefully there will be further explanations for laymen in the future DSM5.
