[–] Sam_Bass@lemmy.world 7 points 8 hours ago

Absolutely nuts

[–] BreadOven@lemmy.world -3 points 4 hours ago

For fucks sake, put a fucking NSFW tag on this shit. I hated it, but for other people it could even be worse.

Your post is bad, and you should feel bad.

Would love to have a wood pecker as a pet, but the last thing I need in my financial situation is another bill.

This is why I got chickens instead of ducks.

Like most phobias I think most people experience discomfort with this imagery but to really have a phobia it needs to be an unreasonable level of anxiety I think.

IDK why we have a hard wired aversion to these. It might be a vestigial response to some kind of predator or danger which is no longer relevant.

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 5 points 8 hours ago

I think it signals severe ailment, like blisters, pox diseases, etc

[–] RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world 3 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

It looks like spider eggs and eyes.

[–] ghostrider2112@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

Were you to wake up one day with something like this in the skin of your leg (it can happen), I think you would realize why it can become a phobia 🤣 Also, I hope that never happens!

[–] SendMePhotos@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think that it disgusts me and makes me extremely uncomfortable. I would avoid it at all costs and I would probably freak out if I wound up unknowingly close to it. It is a weird type of fear. I can't explain why but my body will insist I stay far the hell away.

[–] ThoGot@lemm.ee 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

These kinds of pictures remind me of some type of weird infection

[–] Spacehooks@reddthat.com 3 points 21 hours ago

i guess woodpeckers don't get trypophobia

[–] Kalcifer@sh.itjust.works 27 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (3 children)

CMV: Trypophobia should be tagged as NSFW.

[–] feedum_sneedson@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

It's not a phobia, it's just gross. Everybody thinks it looks gross.

[–] FeatherConstrictor@sh.itjust.works 33 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Genuine questions for the purpose of discussion: should photos of spiders also be marked as NSFW for arachnophobia? What other phobias should and shouldn't be considered in this?

I do not have any genuine phobias, so I concede that I'm speaking out of my limited knowledge coming only from years of solo and group therapy for other issues, but NSFW tags are intended to block images that you wouldn't want your boss (or mom, or general public) to see you looking at due to them being sexual or otherwise inappropriate. There are a lot of things that are going to trigger phobias and other very difficult feelings for a lot of people, but I don't think it's feasible to ask that everyone accommodate all possibilities when posting images or sharing stories. I think it's a positive thing to tag content warnings in bodies of text, for example, and at the same time I think that a person that can have an extreme reaction to what is otherwise an innocuous image due to a personal issue needs to take responsibility for it.

I hope this doesn't come across as minimizing the very real struggles that people with phobias have to deal with on a daily basis, and as a whole I support making public spaces more accessible.

ETA: my understanding of a phobia is having an irrational fear so severe that it causes very real and disruptive anxiety and panic upon being exposed to the phobia. If seeing an image like this causes you discomfort or unease, but doesn't really affect you severely or impact your life negatively, is that really a phobia?

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 1 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago) (1 children)

I think trypophobia is a "meme" phobia on the internet.

Like how everyone says "oh that's my OCD". It's not really OCD (and it's somewhat demeaning to people that do really have OCD), they're just picky/finicky/particular.

Same with trypophobia. It may be a crippling phobia to a small amount of people, but it's unsettling at most to a lot of people. Like that. Lots of people don't have a serious phobia around a bunch of holes (some people do, I'm not saying it's not real)...it just makes them feel really uncomfortable in a weird and almost indescribable way.

[–] Tudsamfa@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

Fun fact: Caulrophobia (fear of clowns) is way more common than arachnophobia (according to a quick glance at wikipedia), if we ignore how serious a reaction usually is in deciding what to cw, we better be ready to hide all Balatro screenshots.

[–] Phlimy@jlai.lu 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I definitely think content warnings (not specifically "NSFW") are ideal for this. Sure, the line between what should and shouldn't be content-warned is blurry, and you don't need to go through every highly-specific issue someone might have with your post, but things like tripophobia (or arachnophobia) are pretty widely known so it makes sense to warn about it imo. Especially for image posts since you can't really just "not look at it" if it pops up in your feed.

And whether or not the warning is precisely about a "phobia" isn't relevant imo. It's just a nice thing to do, as it avoids causing others to feel suddenly itchy and uncomfortable for several minutes.

So no, I wouldn't tag spider images as NSFW, but I'd definitely add a "CW: spider" if Lemmy supported it 🙂

[–] oftheair@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Part of the problem is the lack of tools/functionality. Lemmy doesn't allow for hiding images without the NSFW tag. It could/should function a lot more like mastodon in some ways in our opinion, allowing both the user to hide all images in their settings and having more specific CWs that could hide even the post image behind.

[–] Ludrol@szmer.info 3 points 22 hours ago

There is Lemmy RFC that addresses more CW tags

I think that sometimes CW are used incorrectly and it produces absurd situations like CW on a poem: Content warning mastodon field with doll, gun and food

[–] Demdaru@lemmy.world 5 points 23 hours ago

We have AI which is good at image recognition. Just use this little schmuck to add tags to posts and allow users to filter tags. Would also helo with Trump/Elon filtering etc.

[–] Atelopus-zeteki@fedia.io 92 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Shouldn't this be: A Woodpecker Preparing for Winter? The order of words a in sentence, difference makes.

[–] SnowChickenFlake@sh.itjust.works 53 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah, sounds like a title to a recipe 😆

[–] SoleInvictus@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I stuff my woodpecker's holes full of acorns before I gobble it up. Doesn't everyone?

Perhaps it's translated from another language. The whole thing seems a little stilted, so maybe.

Acorn: this hole is meant for me!

[–] Mothra@mander.xyz 51 points 1 day ago (2 children)

This is amazing. I have a question though: How come only the author woodpecker can remove the acorns but not other woodpeckers? What kind of ID tech are these guys using?

[–] JayDee@lemmy.sdf.org 35 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

They jam the acorn in hard enough that you have to break the acorn to get it out. If they put it in too small a hole, though, it breaks and rots. Too big a hole and they get taken.

EDIT: clearly didn't read closely enough. PBS says that woodpecker families run security on their stashes. So they basically just attack anybody who tries stealing. So I guess the ID tech is 'eyes'.

'patrols and batons' classic

[–] riskable@programming.dev 55 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Since they don't have fingerprints they ID the pecker.

This is making me feel queasy cos that tree makes me think of skin and the things in it zits.

[–] Not_mikey@lemmy.dbzer0.com 25 points 1 day ago (2 children)

That's trypophobia . Don't Google it though, might come up with a lot of triggering pictures.

[–] mexicancartel@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Why so many people are complaining and having trypophobia in this thread? Is that very common? I've never heard of it before

[–] Not_mikey@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

There's a study showing about 1 in 6 people have it to some degree, so relatively common. It's just that the images that trigger it are specific and rare, for me the clustering and the type of holes have to be just right, but if it is, ick

The way I learned about it was someone posted a picture specifically meant to trigger it on 4chan to troll people, and it haunted me enough to look into it.
