Some years back a friend of mine proposed a model where there are various different aggregates of personality and physical traits. Within each type, people see what confirms their preferences or dispositions to be "hot", and what goes against these concepts to be "not hot". As a result, there's a consistent clustering of people, and a symmetry in how they order each other, where if you see people in cluster A as a 9, it'll look like hot people getting with hot people, while people in cluster B might each see the cluster A people as a 2 and vice versa.
