And I think it's the thermocouple that's shot because the pilot light won't stay lit. Now I have to hound my dad to call the gas company to fix it, but it looks like from their website they outsource with Homeserve so it's going to be a circus trying to have them contact a hvac person to come here. Why can't it just be as simple as calling the gas company?

I second what they said. The pilot light heats up a thin metal rod (I guess thats the thermocouple). That metal rod gets covered in soot/carbon deposits over time. If you can clean it off like the other comrade said, it might fix your issue. Copper bristle brush is ideal, but use what ya got :)
