I'm going to start off by saying I would recommend watching The Gorge as blind as you can. The trailer doesn't spoil much but it does reveal the framework and direction of the story. If you like the 'vibe' or setting of Annihilation though you may like it.

If you don't mind a bit of a reveal this is what I mean by the last part:

spoilerBoth movies are about a quarantined area where mysteries lurk.

It's near-future sc-fi but leans a bit more into horror and action than Annihilation.

Here's what I liked and disliked about the movie (real spoilers):

spoilerI went into The Gorge after only seeing the movie poster so I thought it was going to be some kind of Cold War-style forbidden love movie. I was glad to see it evolve into something else.

What I liked the most was the setting and premise. A heavily defended remote and isolated area full of mutated mysterious creatures and plants where attacks are infrequent but when they happen they're in World War Z style is something I find neat. I feel like I see elements of this regularly in video games but less so in movies.

Once they were inside the gorge I would have liked to have seen the mutations as a bit more grand or awe inspiring like they appeared in Annihilation. Maybe a bit less humanoid. That might be a bit hard though considering how dark and foggy it was and how they immediately were trying to get out rather than explore.

A pretty good animated show for adults. It plays into themes around psychedelic mushrooms and evil big pharma conspiracy theories.

It's made by some of the same people as the masterpiece Scavenger's Reign.

A bit over streaming at the moment so am queuing up a few Humphrey Bogart movies - does anyone have any recommendations?

So far I have some of the big ones Casablanca, Maltese Falcon, Sabrina. Watched Casablanca for the first time - loved it.

TV series version of the classic Victor Hugo novel.

Class, war, class war, crime, punishment, rehabilitation, merry, cruelty, revenge, order, revolution, racism, religion, love, death, meaning of life, this story covers it all.

This is not a musical.

Available for free on arte.tv in English, French, German, might require VPN to France or Germany.

Shtisel tells a slice of life family story set among ultra orthodox (haredim) Jews in Jerusalem, centered on the Shtisel family headed by patriarch Rabbi Shtisel. Romance, forbidden love, friendship, and family relations are shown in a society with very strict rules about everything.

It's really good at showing the values and strengths, as well as the limits and weaknesses, of such strict way of living. The show gave me a better understanding of why people follow religions and what we might have lost in modern secular society. Even if the rules fail, are broken, or cause harm, they always come from a deep sense of love for humans and their condition.

These very religious Jews use technology as sparingly as possible, which is also a good contrast to how most people live nowadays. It makes their lives slower, but also more immediate, aware, and direct.

The meaning of life, family, humans, our relations with each other, daily struggles, and similar themes are approached in a thoughtful way.

If you know of a show that gives insights into Islam in a similar way, I would love to hear about it.

Available on arte.tv for free in Hebrew (and some Yiddish) with German and French subtitles. Might require VPN.

Hi guys! I've been trying to get ahold of a copy of this amazing French TV series, with proper subtitles. I've tried through...wearing a patch methods, and I'd be happy to purchase it physical on blueray, too. But the problem is...Seems the subtitles are a bit of a shoddy work. The English subtitles are missing the parts of English dialogue (so whenever any character switches to English, the subtitles disappear), and some other translation (to Spanish, for example) are missing complete parts of dialogue, in when characters talk Arab mostly.

So my question would be...is there anywhere I could check with the full subtitles in English/Spanish (perhaps also Italian/Portuguese), for ALL dialogues regardless the language spoken?

If these kind of requests are not allowed I apologize.

I am looking for the name of a contemporary sci-fi TV show. American, English language. Its from between 2011 and 2016. Just one season as far as I know. The premise is that a matchmakers wife is "assumingly" kidnapped. Turns out he is the double (possible clone?) of an WW2 SS-officer, and are unknowing part of an larger world conspiracy. Trying to bring about the end if the world? I remember the last scene were one of the main antagonists (now blinded) are waiting in line to see a healer who was revealed in the show.

Edit: ChatGPT solved it.

The discovery of hundreds of unmarked graves at an Indian residential school in Canada in 2021 was just the catalyst for “Sugarcane.”

Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie, the filmmakers behind the Oscar-nominated documentary, spent years investigating the truth behind just one of the institutions. “Sugarcane,” now streaming on Hulu, paints a horrifying picture of the systemic abuses inflicted by the state-funded school and exposes for the first time a pattern of infanticide and babies born to Indigenous girls and fathered by priests.

While (NoiseCat) was mulling (Kassie's offer to make the documentary together), she went looking for a group to focus on and landed on St. Joseph’s Mission near the Sugarcane Reservation of Williams Lake in British Columbia. Unbeknownst to her, that was the school NoiseCat’s family attended. He’d heard stories about his father being born nearby and found in a dumpster. Over the course of making the film they’d discover that he was actually born in a dormitory and found in the school’s incinerator.

Ok. So its something im sorta frustrated with in movie and film plots. Its where the characters seem to intentionally not tell other characters things for apparently no reason. So its like a fair amount of the plot would not exist if the characters would just mention relevant things. This is usually in fantasy types like in particular I am seeing it with the magicians and school spirits. I mean maybe behavior like this is common outside my experience but its weird to me.

An official listing confirmed the King of the Hill reboot episode count, hinting at its eventual release date.

King of the Hill originally aired on Fox for 13 seasons from 1997 to 2010, maintaining steady ratings and critical acclaim throughout its run.

After being officially ordered by Hulu in 2023, production on the King of the Hill reboot wrapped in October 2024.

Hulu's revival will age up key characters, with Bobby Hill entering adulthood, while also navigating the challenge of replacing late voice actors like Johnny Hardwick.

Honestly, the last person I expected, maybe I just haven't watched a lot of shows with twists lately

It's on a weekly release schedule, so only the first episode released today. Has anyone been watching this series? Did you watch the new episode? What do you think of all of it so far?

I think the series is fantastic in so many ways - concept, writing, acting, directing, cinematography, production design, music. I usually avoid watching series these days, but this show really has me hooked. I was hoping to discuss it a bit here since I haven't found much about it on Lemmy yet. I figured that this would be a favorite with a lot of people here.

If you mention details about the story, please don't forget to add spoiler masks and alerts.
