From Host and Managing Editor, W5 Avery Haines: 'The subject line stopped me cold.

“We’re not a cult.”

It was late 2024, and the email came from a crisis PR firm hired by a couple under siege—Jeff and Shaleia Divine, the controversial spiritual leaders behind Twin Flames Universe.

Former followers accuse them of being manipulative cult leaders, puppet masters who exert coercive control, push followers into unwanted relationships, and even pressure them to change genders. The email came with an invitation: Come see the truth for yourself.

I agreed—on the condition that I’d be investigating every allegation. And there are many: isolation from family and friends, unpaid labor, brainwashing, forced relationships, and the most disturbing of all, coerced gender transitions.'

Summary:

President Trump's Ukraine and Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff was in Moscow, where he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, when he was included in a group chat with more than a dozen other top administration officials — and inadvertently, one journalist — on the messaging app Signal, a CBS News analysis of open-source flight information and Russian media reporting has revealed.

Russia has repeatedly tried to compromise Signal, a popular commercial messaging platform that many were shocked to learn senior Trump administration officials had used to discuss sensitive military planning.

Witkoff arrived in Moscow shortly after noon local time on March 13, according to data from the flight tracking website FlightRadar24, and Russian state media broadcast video of his motorcade leaving Vnukovo International Airport shortly after. About 12 hours later, he was added to the "Houthi PC small group" chat on Signal, along with other top Trump administration officials, to discuss an imminent military operation against the Houthis in Yemen, according to The Atlantic magazine editor Jeffrey Goldberg, who was included on the chat for reasons that remain unclear.

But then realised I forgot about a morning meeting.

So now I am HYPED for my work day… and still need to get the antidepressant effects from a workout later today.

My childhood home was an old house built in the 1700s. When my parents bought it there were bats in the attic, an acre of land, & huge fireplaces in the dining and living room(a hole in the dining room wall that they used to cook). I never experienced anything haunted in the house, but my parents did. When I was a baby my mom was going down the stairs to the first floor holding me. She could feel herself about to fall, but was pulled backwards by something. Something saved her from falling. She thought it was strange but didn’t tell my father. A week goes by and my father tells my mother he encountered something weird. He was going down the stairs and before he was about to trip something pulled his shirts collar back. They researched after and found a woman lived in the house before with her baby and died mysteriously. They think she was protecting me, and when I grew up in that house I always felt safe…Im an anxious person and when we moved I always felt watched. But in that house, I felt whatever watching me was doing it in a way so I wouldn’t have to watch over myself and worry. It was doing it for me.( if that makes any sense) In houses after I was terrified, but that house I felt serene and safe as if I had a guardian angel.

In the last weeks Lemmy has seen a lot of growth, with thousands of new users. To welcome them we are holding this AMA to answer questions from the community. You can ask about the beginnings of Lemmy, how we see the future of Lemmy, our long-term goals, what makes Lemmy different from Reddit, about internet and social media in general, as well as personal questions.

We'd also like to hear your overall feedback on Lemmy: What are its greatest strengths and weaknesses? How would you improve it? What's something you wish it had? What can our community do to ensure that we keep pulling users away from US tech companies, and into the fediverse?

Lemmy and Reddit may look similar at first glance, but there is a major difference. While Reddit is a corporation with thousands of employees and billionaire investors, Lemmy is nothing but an open source project run by volunteers. It was started in 2019 by @dessalines and @nutomic, turning into a fulltime job since 2020. For our income we are dependent on your donations, so please contribute if you can. We'd like to be able to add more full-time contributors to our co-op.

We will start answering questions from tomorrow (Wednesday). Besides @dessalines and @nutomic, other Lemmy contributors may also chime in to answer questions:

Here are our previous AMAs for those interested.

Summary:

Facing pressure from his right flank to take on judges who have ruled against President Donald Trump, Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., on Tuesday floated the possibility of Congress eliminating some federal courts.

It’s the latest attack from Republicans on the federal judiciary, as courts have blocked a series of actions taken by the Trump administration. In addition to funding threats, Trump and his conservative allies have called for the impeachment of certain federal judges who have ruled against him, most notably U.S. District Judge James Boasberg, who attempted to halt Trump from using the Alien Enemies Act to deport Venezuelan migrants.

“We do have the authority over the federal courts, as you know. We can eliminate an entire district court. We have power of funding over the courts and all these other things,” Johnson told reporters on Tuesday. “But desperate times call for desperate measures, and Congress is going to act.”

Johnson, a former constitutional attorney, later clarified that he was making a point about Congress’ “broad authority” over the “creation, maintenance and the governance” of the courts. Article III of the Constitution established the Supreme Court but gave Congress the power to “ordain and establish” lower federal courts.

Congress has eliminated courts in the past. In 1913, for example, Congress abolished the Commerce Court and its judges were redistributed to the federal appeals court, according to Congress.gov. And in 1982, Congress passed legislation abolishing the Article III Court of Claims and U.S. Court of Customs and Patent Appeals, and established the Article I Court of Federal Claims and the Article III U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

Item #: SCP-NC691

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-NC691 is to be stored at all times in a sound proofed anomalous item storage unit located at least 5 meters from electrical outlets or other anomalous objects with electrical properties or effects.

Access to SCP-NC691 is restricted to any personal below level 3 security clearance without the express permission of the site director.

Description: SCP-NC691 is an air conditioning unit of unknown make or model and bares no manufacturers markings. The plastic outer case shows signs of severe wear including cracks and yellowing of the plastic, despite this SCP-NC691 appears to be impervious to physical damage implying the object was deliberately created in a damaged state or somehow became anomalous some time after its initial manufacture.

SCP-NC691s anomalous effect manifests when it is plugged into a standard american 120v electrical outlet and turned on. When in this state SCP-NC691 will initially appear to be a normal air conditioning unit albeit a particularly loud one; however while in use SCP-NC691 will under all circumstances be precisely 9.1 decibels louder than any other noise in the vicinity. The increase in volume is coincided by a matching increase in power with the object releasing colder air at higher velocities as the sound level increases. Due to the logarithmic nature of the decibel scale cross testing between SCP-NC691 and other sound producing or amplifying anomalies is forbidden without written permission by at least 2 members of the O5 council.

Experiment Log #NC691-01
Test Procedure:
SCP-NC691 was exposed to a sound level of precisely 70 decibels (normal human conversation) in order to establish an accurate baseline of its effect.

Result:
SCP-NC691 produced a sound of 79.1 decibels with no other effects observed.

Experiment Log #NC691-02
Test Procedure:
A member of site security was instructed to enter a containment room with SCP-NC691 and discharge his firearm.

Result:
Security guard suffered short term hearing loss, staff involved were re-assigned.

Experiment Log #NC691-03
Test Procedure: A class-D subject was placed in a sound proofed containment chamber with SCP-NC691 and instructed to set off a large fire cracker.

Result:
Containment chamber observation window was shattered resulting in several researchers suffering minor lacerations and temporary hearing loss, class-D subject was permamently deafened. Testing with sound sources above 150 decibels banned until further review.

~~Experiment~~ Incident Log #NC691-04
~~Test Procedure~~ Incident:
Junior researcher Hugh for unknown reasons, potentially related to a dispute with a superior on the day prior, broke into an on-site maintenance area where equipment used my MTF Eta-11 (“Savage Beasts”) was being serviced and gained access to a [REDACTED] intended for use against sound based anomalies.

On the following day when testing began junior researcher Hugh excused himself from the test area and subsiquently remotely activated [REDACTED] inside the containment cell being used for testing with SCP-NC691.

Result:
A sound possibly exceeding 194 decibels (the theoretical maximum under normal atmospheric conditions) was produced by SCP-NC691; This is, in addition to a powerful shockwave, theorized to have produced a large atmospheric cavitation bubble that resulted in the subsiquent implosion of the containment area and severe damage to surrounding parts of the facility. All staff within the containment area including junior researcher Hugh are believed to have been killed immediately though sufficient remains could not be recovered to perform an autopsy, in addition several deaths and numerous injuries were suffered by site staff in surrounding areas with the widespread damage resulting in multiple low level containment breaches.

Following this incident several members of site security were disciplined for their failure to prevent the theft of equipment, and a petition was made to re-classify SCP-NC691 as Euclid, though this was later denied.

Democratic senators demanded answers from leaders of the US intelligence community on Tuesday on how the top editor of the Atlantic was added to a group chat discussing airstrikes in Yemen, arguing that the “sloppy, careless” leak put national security at risk.

The unusual story broke on Monday, when the Atlantic published a piece by its editor-in-chief, Jeffrey Goldberg, who said he had been added to the group on the messaging app Signal, and watched as accounts that appeared to match top Trump administration officials, including Vice-President JD Vance and the secretary of state, Marco Rubio, debated and then coordinated a wave of bombings targeting the Houthis in Yemen.

Tulsi Gabbard, the director of national intelligence, and John Ratcliffe, the CIA director, both of whom were also in the group, appeared on Tuesday before the Senate intelligence committee for an annual hearing on threats facing the United States, which Democrats used to accuse them of failing to protect sensitive details of US military operations.

EDIT: If you are downvoting, please explain why. Are you OK with repeat offenders taking up taxpayer funds? Do you disagree that there's a problem? What is it that you dislike? This isn't a topic we can ignore.

Not long ago, there was an article posted saying that over 50% of court cases in Ontario are basically dismissed because there aren't enough resources to handle them.

But every time I read police statements for crimes in my region (Durham), I notice a pattern:

Kaley-Ann FREIER, age 25, of Ajax is charged with: Assault with a Weapon x2 and Fail to Comply with Probation Order x3.

Keith Theodore CONSTANTIN, age 45, poses a significant risk to the community, especially children. This individual has a history of serious criminal convictions, including Sexual Assault, Sexual Assault with a Weapon, Assault with a Weapon, Assault, Robbery, Possession of Explosives, Uttering Threats, and multiple violations of probation orders.

London BOSSIO, age 28 of Whitby is charged with: Robbery; Assault With A Weapon and Breach Of Probation.

Noah COLLINS, age 21, from Brock is charged with: Assault with a Weapon or Imitation Weapon; Assault/Cause Bodily Harm; Fail To Comply With Undertaking and Breach Of Probation

Jalil Luddin SAYAH, age 28, from Oshawa is charged with numerous offences including: Pointing A Firearm x2, Assault with a Weapon or Imitation Weapon x2, Possess Firearm While Prohibited, and Fail To Comply With Release Order x5.

Marten WOODS, age 37, of No Fixed Address is charged with: Uttering Threats to Cause Death or Bodily Harm; Point a Firearm and Breach of Probation.

Michael DE LAURENTIIS, age 41 of no fixed address is charged with Mischief/Damage Property Over $5000, Theft Under, Possess Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000 and Fail to Comply with Probation Order.

Zachary LINTNER, age 33 from Courtice is charged with: Break-and-Enter, Possess Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000, Fail to Comply with Release Order, and Fail to Comply with Probation Order x2.

Joseph DAVRIEUX, age 55 from Clarington is charged with: Break-and-Enter, Dangerous Operation, Flight from Police, Operate a Conveyance While Prohibited, and Fail to Comply with Release Order x2.

These happen daily, and it seems like the all of our resources (police, courts, victim services, etc.) are being drained by individuals who are simply not compatible with society.

What solution(s) do we have that are effective and could be agreed upon by all political parties? This madness has to stop.
