I finally got around to seeing "I Saw The TV Glow", and it definitely lived up to the hype.

In Chinese usage, the cuckold (or wittol) is said to be "戴綠帽子" dài lǜmàozi, translated into English as 'wearing the green hat'. The term is an allusion to the sumptuary laws used from the 13th to the 18th centuries that required males in households with prostitutes to wrap their heads in a green scarf (or later a hat).

Several different, random seeming files across various different Syncthing folders keep failing to sync even after restart, rescan, and reconfiguration, with the below error

syncing: finishing: opening temp file: open /storage/emulated/0/Pictures/Webcam/.syncthing.2024-07-1621:42:30.jpg.tmp: operation not permitted

I don't how how to fix it, the desktop app has the required permissions, and the Android app has as many storage permissions as I can give it under Android's horrible SAF limitations.

It seemed to used to be happening only to some specific old files, but now it's happening to all the new files I add onto my laptop under Videos or Music.

In addition, when trying to sync files with a specific server, it shows as disconnected, even when both are online and connected to the LAN (my phone via WiFi, the server via Ethernet), and there is some error about encryption expectations

2025-06-20 23:33:38: Failure checking encryption consistency with device server for folder "Music" (8ipwu-ehye4): remote expects to exchange encrypted data, but is configured for plain data

The server is running Syncthing GUI on Fedora GNOME, same as the laptop (which does work besides for the first issue), so I don't know what the difference is that would be causing this, not a single file has been synced to the server.

This is honestly making me want to get a Fairphone 5 with Ubuntu touch to get rid of these issues, but I can't do that now.

If anyone could advise, I would really appreciate it!

Despite facing increased competition in the space, not least from the Epic Games Store, Valve's platform is synonymous with PC gaming. The service is estimated to have made $10.8 billion in revenue during 2024, a new record for the Half-Life giant. Since it entered the PC distribution space back in 2018, the rival Epic Games Store has been making headway – and $1.09 billion last year – but Steam is still undeniably dominant within the space.

Valve earns a large part of its money from taking a 20-30% cut of sales revenue from developers and publishers. Despite other storefronts opening with lower overheads, Steam has stuck with taking this slice of sales revenue, and in doing so, it has been argued that Valve is unfairly taking a decent chunk of the profits of developers and publishers.

This might change, depending on how an ongoing class-action lawsuit initiated by Wolfire Games goes, but for the time being, Valve is making money hand over fist selling games on Steam. The platform boasts over 132 million users, so it's perfectly reasonable that developers and publishers feel they have to use Steam – and give away a slice of their revenue – in order to reach the largest audience possible.

So I just discovered c/womensstuff, commented in a thread that took my interest and got a somewhat abusive "eff off" comment from a mod with added sarcasm.

I then saw it's "women only". This is the only community I know that bans based on a protected identity of a person, e.g. in the UK, it's illegal to discriminate based on gender, sexuality, religion etc.

How does everyone feel about this for Lemmy communities?

I often use plantnet.org for plants whenever I'm outside, and it works really really well. Sadly, not for mosses.

Is there a service out there that's specialized in mosses and similar stuff?

Because they all look the damn same for someone without experience 😭

If there isn't anything, can you recommend me other resources where I can learn it myself? What characteristics should I look out for to narrow it down to the species? The subspecies isn't that important for me :)

Emerson Colindres had no criminal record and was attending appointment with ICE when detained

A teenage student and soccer stand-out was arrested by immigration authorities four days after his high school graduation ceremony in Ohio earlier this month, and deported to Honduras this week, his family has said.

Emerson Colindres, 19, had no criminal record and was attending a regularly scheduled appointment with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Cincinnati when he was detained on 4 June, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

His parents told the newspaper he was deported on Wednesday to a country he has not lived in since he was 8 years old.

Looking for Privacy-Oriented Open-Source Android Browsers

I'm looking for a privacy-focused, open-source Android browser. Here are some options I've found:

  • IronFox
    • recommended by LibreWolf
  • Fennec
    • no repo
  • Waterfox
  • Vanadium
  • iceraven
    • most stars
  • bromite
    • no longer maintained
    • Bromite has a fingerprint randomization and Vanadium doesn't. But Vanadium has better security if you use Graphene. So yeah, for privacy Bromite might be better
  • cromite
    • Bromite fork
  • brave
    • controversial

Is there any other browser out there that fits this criteria? Is there an even better choice? I’m particularly interested in ones that focus on privacy.

EDIT:

  • in terms of popularity, privacy and functionality I guess the best choices are iceraven and cromite
    • iceraven based on firefox
    • cromitebased on chromium

few questions

  • What is the difference between IronFox, Fennec, Waterfox and iceraven?
  • I know that Brave is a bit controversial, but If Brave does something behind our backs wouldn’t we be able to know it since all the source code is out there? If it has some features we don’t like can’t we simply modify the source code?
