Interesting how all the different aspects of Herbert's life are present in Dune and other books, excellent analysis as always from ASX. Man I should really read that book.

I'm not too surprised to hear Herbert's politics were largely incoherent, that's the case with many authors, especially sci-fi authors from that era. Like he started off as basically a libertarian and ended up somewhere between a succdem and a green anarchist.

the red robes are for their chaplains

I don't generally agree with people who say that Christianity is irredeemably bad but damn if this isn't a slam-dunk argument in their favor

Even apart from dedicated CSAM sites, it's mind-blowing how many adult men creep on minors on regular ass corporate social media, openly and publicly, with their full names and faces right fuckin there alongside their creepy messages. And it seems like the worst that ever happens to them is an account ban, maybe, if mods actually give half a shit.

Redditors all talk exactly the same like they're in a weird robot cult, so when they see internet people conversing in a normal, reasonably casual style and having a good time doing so it short circuits their brains

I don't feel that any potential benefits of the bazinga plagiarism machine outweigh the very obvious downsides, like how the outputs are often completely wrong and the massive energy consumption and environmental impact the AI industry runs on.

This mirrors much of what I'd expect my dad to say if I espoused my blatantly commie views to him. I think you're right about older folks needing to ruminate on our ideas for a bit to warm up to them.

I hope your dad gets there comrade penguin-love
