And I dont mean of we were logically talking about the language etymologically, I mean words that make sense on your brain with a different spelling. Unreasonable stupid spellings.

For me:

  • Colledge for college
  • Occean for ocean
  • Pation for passion

These were mistakes I made as a kid and I get it

Possessive is normally done with an apostrophe. The dog's toy. The apartment's lobby.

But when possessive goes on the pronoun "it"? No apostrophe.

Look out for the monster. Its fangs are sharp.

If you put an apostrophe, that's for "it is".

This bothers me slightly. There's history illinonating why it happened, but I don't like it.

You mean like his and her?Possessive pronouns don't use apostrophes.

Webster tried to reform English, and was a reason for a number of the American English changes from British English. Some of his changes caught on, like "public" for "publick" or "jail" for "gaol".

But others did not.

I think that some of those ones that didn't catch on would be good candidates.

E.g. "Island" to "Iland".

Or "is" to "iz".

Oh thats interesting

The number of extra "ue" should be proportional to the number of people in the queue. Ex: "Oh no, there's a queue" "Could be worse, could be a queueueue"

Lmao I love that

I have to look up the spelling of "necessary" every time. Just make is nessessary.

Yeah this one I get too

[–] BudgetBandit@sh.itjust.works 5 points 6 days ago (2 children)

It’s English. First it’s needed to make the spelling and sounding uniform.

read read red dread

Tough though through

[–] TheLeadenSea@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 days ago

Red dead redemption

[–] UnhingedFridge@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

Tough thoughts, though thorough throughout.

Drop the letter C, and reformat everything to be phonetic.

[–] Ceedoestrees@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago (2 children)

As a general rule, all 'C's should make a 'Ch' sound and leave 'S' and 'K' the fuck alone.

[–] TheLeadenSea@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 days ago

Nah, CH should be tsh, we need a new letter for SH, and maybe C could be the kh sound like in loch

[–] SnokenKeekaGuard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Is that how the c in your username is pronounced?

[–] Ceedoestrees@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

It's pronounced however you want, baby.

[–] Longmactoppedup@aussie.zone 3 points 6 days ago

The word yacht or the way it is pronounced.

[–] bananabread@lemmy.zip 3 points 6 days ago

There are so many silent letters in English, quite confusing

The "dk" in your title should probably be spelled "do."

Colonel needs an R in it, or to be pronounced co-lo-nel instead of ker-nel.

[–] TheLeadenSea@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 days ago

I just pronounce colonise kernelise for consistency

[–] darkdemize@sh.itjust.works 6 points 6 days ago

There's an interesting history behind the word colonel. IIRC, the English "coronel" and the French "colonel" used to be used somewhat interchangeably. Eventually, we kept the French spelling but the English pronunciation.

[–] SnokenKeekaGuard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Perfect post to have a typo in.

[–] MaggiWuerze@feddit.org 5 points 6 days ago

Also 'in' your brain, not 'on' it

[–] testfactor@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I just wish we would consolidate on 5 letter words ending with EL and LE as to what the order should be.

Why is it "table" and "label"? They're basically the same word minus the first letter, but the spellings are different. I hate it.

[–] Zwuzelmaus@feddit.org 5 points 1 week ago

Subtel?

Cannible?

Baesball?

You are right, it's a mess :)

I get this. I like it
