José Padilla was convicted on charges of supporting al Qaeda after he was initially accused of planning a "dirty bomb" attack in the U.S. He was eventually sentenced to 21 years in prison.

JD Vance bashed Democrats at the state, local and national levels Friday during his visit to Los Angeles, accusing top California officials of encouraging violent protesters and Sen. Alex Padilla, whom he referred to as "José Padilla," of engaging in "political theater."

“I was hoping José Padilla would be here to ask a question. But, unfortunately, I guess he decided not to show up because there wasn’t the theater, and that’s all it is,” Vance said. “It’s pure political theater. These guys show up. They want to be captured on camera doing something.”

Vance's comments referred to an incident last week in which federal law enforcement agents handcuffed Padilla after he interrupted a news conference by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Padilla was forcibly removed from the event but not arrested.

Trump has fueled a complete lack of decorum in politics. This sort of name calling is childish and unbecoming of the office. I watched Howard Dean yell “BYAA” as a meme and lost any chance at the presidency. Dan Quayle misspelled potato and lost his chances. Now, the vice president can just openly mock people, in a straight racist fashion, and this guy walks around as a “Christian.” Christ would be appalled by this administration.

I hate that the bar is so low for some of the highest in society.

Come on now, you seriously think it's worth anybody's time to talk about this idea that Christianity has anything to do with dignified or kind behavior?

Stop pretending. See it for what it is.

[–] Fandangalo@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

It has to do with Vance, who reports one thing & acts the opposite. I know this is mostly void screaming, but I’m sick of people like Vance who claim any sort of religious superiority while being completely ignorant to Jesus’ teachings. For decades, Republicans have been telling me to pray & read the Bible, and then I do, and they think it’s liberal talking points? If anything, these people are supposed to believe in Christ.

It’s nothing new, “Oo a politician lying.” But I guess I’m just frustrated personally.

For some of us, I suppose those of us who accidentally took the NT serious, it's supposed to. It's part of why I left the church.

Prayer is a religious pacifier. When I give my daughter a pacifier, literally nothing has changed about her situation, but she feels better when she has it.

This Should have been the end of his campaign.

Thank you for bringing this up. I couldn't find the claw-hand image I knew we needed.

[–] Wytch@lemmy.zip 20 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It’s pure political theater. These guys show up. They want to be captured on camera doing something.

Like, I dunno, awkwardly ordering donuts and pretending to care about the employees. Yeah. Same-same.

How long have you been working here? Okay. You like working here? Okay.

When asked why he referred to the senator as "José Padilla," despite his first name being Alejandro, Taylor Van Kirk — a spokesperson for Vance — said "he must have mixed up two people who have broken the law." Van Kirk did not elaborate.

Poor J.D. can't tell one criminal from another. Do you think the president minds when Vance calls him Fred?

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Only one of these "criminals" is a criminal.

[–] Boddhisatva@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

A fair point. Between the four, Fred, Donald, José, and Alex, only Alex has not been charged with a crime.

Whatever you say, James. ...er... Jimmy... er... um. Mr Bowman? er... uhm... yeah.....

Hey man I’m just glad he’s helping heterosectionals get more visibility in society.

They don't care about the cause they are promoting. They say these things as strategy. It's about utilizing peoples emotions to encourage them and lead them, regardless of side. It gaslights the left and they want that. It emboldens the right extremism and they want that. It divides and occupies the minds of people creating pawns that do work for them, even if that work is just talking about and "fighting against" it. It's all just social manipulation. ...because they know exactly how to socially guide and manipulate. They know the typical responses they will get from people and can utilize each response for their cause.

Oh look. More gaslighting from an instigating wannabe bully. It’s an administration of serial abusers through and through. JD Vance especially has zero redeeming qualities as a human. His world view like the rest of his ilk is to exploit as much as possible; From people to ecosystems. He is the embodiment of cynicism, and a perfect avatar for those big tech fascists and The Heritage Foundation. To reiterate: If something were to happen to him nothing of value for almost all of the world would be lost.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Isn't "JD" "Vance" the guy that endorsed the Unhumans book?

I don't know if anyone should give a flying fuck what he has to say about anything.

[–] Fandangalo@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)
  1. Completely disgusting book. If he had a moral compass and actual faith, he would emulate Christ, not do the exact opposite…

John 13:34, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” Jesus says this before being betrayed by Judas.

Instead, we get blatant racism & wrath. Absolute shame…

[–] eestileib@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Jesus is irrelevant. Christianity is about Paul.

Racism and wrath are front and center.

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 1 week ago

Christianity is about Paul.

He really highjacked the movement from the Jerusalem group. I’ve been learabout the first two hundred years of christianity for about 20 months. He stole it and made it his own thing.

What's really interesting is criticism of Paul as the figure of Simon Magus in Acts. He tried to purchase apostleship just as Simon tried to purchase the laying of hands to invoke the Holy Spirit. Further, the Dead Sea Scrolls (likely texts of the Essenes, a jewish christian sect) refer to the Spouter of Lies and this is thought to be Paul.

It’s a fascinating topic for an atheist history nerd.

[–] Shanedino@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Isn't this pure political theater by vance?

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 week ago

Did he pronounce it to rhyme with "vanilla"?

[–] lipilee 3 points 1 week ago

Something something Jose Padilla was a Spanish DJ who did the first Cafe del Mar compilation album. Also, JD Vance is a cunt.

[–] Archangel1313@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

So, was he arrested for "political theater"?

[–] friend_of_satan@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Would've been awesome if Jose Padilla did step in to respond with that rad chillout track Adios Ayer.

[–] unicornBro@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago

Does he wear eye liner?
