It looks like the spat between India and Pakistan could be dying down, due to a new ceasefire. As of the time of me writing this paragraph, it seems both sides want to maintain it (despite some reports of violations here and there).

Both sides have declared victory, which is completely expected given their mutual political parties and nationalist histories. It's a little harder to say which side has actually won, as both sides seem to have managed to shoot down aircraft and hit military bases. India has, in my opinion, had the more embarrassing moments, but international conflicts aren't cringe compilations. I feel no good-will towards Pakistan's comprador government, but it is at least nice to see Modi knocked down a few pegs. Regardless of the final technical victor, it's obvious that - if the ceasefire is maintained - who won are the hundreds of millions of people who won't have to live in fear of dying in nuclear hellfire.

This conflict is a good example of what multipolarity will truly entail. Countries that have been previously limited in their nationalist ambitions by American pressure will now take opportunities to revolt, sometimes against America itself, and sometimes against other countries in their regional neighbourhood. It's also why, as communists, our goals do not stop at multipolarity; it is merely the establishing act of a new era of agitation against peripheral and semi-peripheral capitalist countries that are forming powerful national bourgeoisie classes as the international American capitalists are forced away.

I know they have technically been saying it for a decade, but the complete alignment of Western liberals around "Al Qaeda is actually good and the sanctions should go now so Syrians can afford buy bread" is one of those things that is just truly black-pilling.

President of Bolivia, Luis Arce, declines his candidacy for the August presidential elections.

  • Telesur English
[–] jack@hexbear.net 7 points 49 minutes ago

https://www.telesurenglish.net/luis-arce-declines-presidential-candidacy-to-strengthen-unity-and-defend-the-plurinational-state/?noamp=available

Arce explained that this decision stems from his conviction not to be a factor of division within the Movement for Socialism (MAS) and the popular camp, and from the need to consolidate a united front that defends the Plurinational State and social achievements.

The president called on all leftist sectors and leaders to take responsibility in closing ranks around the candidate with the greatest chance of advancing, prioritizing the political program above any individual interest. He highlighted that only through maximum unity will it be possible to deepen the revolution and confront the fascist and imperialist threats aiming to destabilize Bolivia.

With his decision to decline candidacy, Arce announced he will fully dedicate himself to government management, urging the Plurinational Legislative Assembly to approve pending laws, especially international loans vital for the country’s development.

Honestly, shout out to Arce here. I don't the Morales power struggle arose out of anything more personal than their belief that they were each best fit to lead the project of building Bolivian socialism. I never thought Arce was a comprador or a stooge (though the self-coup was a move), and this is the move an honest comrade would make at this moment.

I wonder if that means he's going to support Andrónico Rodríguez for president and Evo Morales as the VP?

The ticket could also be Andronico President and David Choquehuanca as VP (again), which was supposed to be the 2020 ticket before Evo intervened and basically forced MAS to accept Arce as the Presidential candidate.

AP News: UnitedHealth Group CEO steps down as company lowers, then withdraws financial outlook for 2025 luigi-dance

It has been a punishing period for UnitedHealth, starting in December when executive Brian Thompson was targeted outside of a New York City hotel and killed. While unrelated to the financial operations of the $340 billion healthcare giant, its shares have tumbled severely since the attack.

UnitedHealth cut its 2025 forecast last month following its first quarterly earnings miss in more than a decade. On Tuesday the company withdrew that financial forecast entirely, saying that medical costs from new Medicare Advantage members were higher than expected.

Shares of UnitedHealth, which have plummeted 38% since the deadly Dec. 4 ambush of Thompson in midtown Manhattan, fell more than 16% Tuesday to levels last seen almost five years ago.

Other big insurers tumbled as well, with Elevance, Humana and Cigna falling between 4% and 7%.

There are many factors that have caused companies to lose value in the last few months, I am curious where UHC would be without this killing though. It's interesting that they saw their first quarterly earnings miss in over ten years. It's hard not to assume that Thompson's death contributed to the company's current issues directly.

Brazil and China Support International Trade Based on WTO Rules: Lula da Silva - Telesur English

Article

Since 2009, China has been Brazil’s largest trading partner, with trade steadily increasing to reach a record US$158 billion in 2023. On Tuesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping welcomed Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva with honors at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, where the two leaders held a closed-door meeting before signing new bilateral agreements.

“For years, the international order has needed deep reforms. In recent months, the world has become more unpredictable, more unstable and more fragmented. China and Brazil are determined to unite against unilateralism and protectionism,” Lula said. He is taking part in the 4th China-CELAC Ministerial Meeting.

The Brazilian president also voiced opposition to trade wars, stating they “have no winners,” “increase prices,” “suppress economies” and “erode the incomes of the most vulnerable people in each country.”

“President Xi Jinping and I support fair trade based on the rules of the World Trade Organization,” Lula emphasized. Xi, for his part, stressed that China and Brazil will jointly defend free trade and the multilateral system. He said the two countries must stand together against unilateralism, protectionism and acts of intimidation.

The text reads, “If virality were not driving analysis in Brazil, this powerful image of Lula and Xi Jinping would be duly interpreted as a show of unity and strength of the Global South through multilateralism and the Brazilian would be celebrated as a statesman, because he is.”

Xi also noted that both nations should align their development strategies, advance the building of a China-Brazil community, promote greater solidarity and cooperation among Global South countries, and strengthen collaboration in infrastructure, agriculture, energy and the energy transition.

Since 2009, China has been Brazil’s largest trading partner, with trade steadily increasing to reach a record US$158 billion in 2023. That year, Brazil registered a favorable trade surplus of US$51 billion. Bilateral cooperation spans nearly all sectors, under a broad strategic partnership agreement in effect since 2012.

On the global stage, in addition to being members of the G20, Brazil and China — along with Russia, India and South Africa — are founding members of BRICS, the economic cooperation group that also includes Iran, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Ethiopia. Brazil holds the rotating BRICS presidency in 2025 and will host the next summit, raising expectations that Xi will visit the country in the coming months. He last visited Brazil in November 2024.

BURKINA FASO-VENEZUELA MEETUP IN RUSSIA

This year’s Victory Day celebrations in Moscow looked less like a standard show of military might and more like a summit of the unbowed, bringing together leaders from Africa, Asia and the Americas, signalling that the age of a one‑pole world is fading.

Burkina Faso President Ibrahim Traoré and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who expressed admiration for the Pan-Africanist revolution taking place in Burkina Faso, whose name means ‘the land of upright [people].’ Both men recognised the role of the West in subjugating the Global South. Maduro has faced several regime change attempts, such as through the West backing US-linked Venezuelan right-wing interventionist Juan Guaidó.

On the other hand, Burkina Faso’s government has confirmed seven coup attempts since Traoré took power following a successful people-backed coup d’état. Both Maduro and Traoré have pursued pro-people policies. For instance, Maduro has championed social spending and initiatives like constructing homes for low-income families. In Burkina Faso, Traoré is building factories and gold processing facilities and modernising agriculture. Plus, Burkina Faso is building the all-too-important anti-imperialist confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) alongside Mali and Niger, a step toward continental unity

CELAC-China Forum: Xi Backs Latin America’s Rejection of Foreign Interference - Telesur English

Article

‘We’ll work with Latin American and Caribbean countries to firmly safeguard the international system,’ he said. On Tuesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed support for Latin American countries in their rejection of foreign interference in domestic affairs.

This show of support for national sovereignty came during the opening address of the 4th China-CELAC Ministerial Forum, held with the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). “China supports the countries of the region in safeguarding their national sovereignty and independence,” Xi said, urging CELAC nations to “pursue a development path suited to their national conditions.”

In addition to the foreign ministers of CELAC countries, the forum includes the participation of presidents Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil, Gabriel Boric of Chile, and Gustavo Petro of Colombia, who currently holds CELAC’s rotating presidency. Xi emphasized that China and Latin American countries are “important members of the Global South” and must remain united amid rising geopolitical tensions, bloc confrontations and increasing tendencies toward unilateralism and protectionism.

“We will work with Latin American and Caribbean countries to firmly safeguard the international system and speak with one voice on international and regional affairs,” he said.

“Development and revitalization are our inherent rights, and fairness and justice are our shared aspirations,” Xi added, in the face of “geopolitical turmoil and confrontation.” He highlighted joint efforts “to practice true multilateralism, uphold international fairness and justice, and promote the reform of the global governance system to advance multipolarity.”

The Chinese leader noted that trade between China and Latin America surpassed US$500 billion for the first time in 2024 and said his country is committed to continued mutual support with CELAC nations on issues concerning their “core interests and major concerns.”

Xi also announced that China would extend a US$9.2 billion line of credit to the region and enhance cooperation on security and law enforcement.

“We must deepen exchanges across various sectors and strengthen communication and coordination on significant international and regional issues,” Xi said. He added that Beijing will invite 300 political party leaders from CELAC countries to visit China to “exchange experiences on governance.”

The 4th China-CELAC forum will address issues including electrical interconnection, renewable energy, trade integration, projects linked to the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), and access to natural resources such as lithium, rare earth elements, oil, and copper.

Bolivia: Luis Arce Surprisingly Abandons Presidential Race, Preaches Leftist Unity - agenzianova

The decision follows a long history of divisions within the Movement for Socialism (MAS)

Article

The President of Bolivia, Luis Arce, has announced that he will not run for office again in the elections scheduled for August 17. The decision, made public a few hours before registration for the presidential race opened, follows a long path of divisions within the Movement for Socialism (MAS), the party that has governed the country almost uninterruptedly for over 20 years. "Today I make known to the Bolivian people with absolute firmness my decision to withdraw my candidacy for the presidential elections next August," Arce said, calling for unity in his political party, to prevent the "fascist project" designed to "destroy the plurinational state" from winning. The appeal was especially directed at his predecessor, who was once a political ally, Evo Morales, who is seeking a new mandate despite the various legal impediments certified by the Constitutional Court. “From this stage I challenge former President Evo Morales not to insist on being a candidate for the presidency,” he said.

An economist, 61 years old, Arce has also long been responsible for a social and economic crisis in the country that has brought his government's approval ratings to their lowest levels in years. The crisis in the availability of the dollar, which the Central Bank has kept tied to a relatively stable exchange rate with the Bolivian for years, and the poor supply of fuel, crucial in a country whose structure makes road transport dominant, are at the root of numerous social protests, often resulting in prolonged closures of the main roads. A poll in view of the presidential elections, published at the end of March by the company Captura, assigned Arce about 1 percent of the preferences.

The hope of the incumbent president is that the unity of the left-wing forces, once united in the MAS and now divided into three segments, can be recomposed. In addition to those of Morales and Arce, who was for a long time Minister of Finance in the governments of the "cocalero" leader, there is in fact a third front that refers to Andronicus Rodriguez, president of the Senate who surprisingly launched his candidacy in recent days, when the head of state was still in the running. A decision that had opened controversy for the possible further fragmentation of the vote, but which today, in light of Morales' renunciation, could be less serious. The political fracture between Arce and Morales, the former considered distant from the leftist values proclaimed by the latter, has led over time to the division of the MAS into two blocks, both in parliament and in the country, protagonists of intense political and legal clashes. Lastly, in November 2024, Evo was ousted from the party he had led for 27 years, forcing him to take refuge in a new political force – Evo Pueblo – which proclaims total distance from the MAS.

Morales has theoretically exhausted the maximum limit of presidential mandates recognized by the Constitution, having also lost a referendum that he had called precisely to overcome the obstacle, but he does not intend to give up the race, denouncing a maneuver against him orchestrated by the right. The indigenous leader is also the protagonist of a delicate judicial affair: accused of sexual violence against minors and human trafficking, he is the subject of an arrest warrant that has been evading for months, sheltered by his most loyal supporters in the region of Cochabamba, which has always been his political and electoral bastion. Not infrequently, protests against the government's actions have been confused with clashes between supporters of Arce and those of Morales, a leader whom the president accuses of wanting to act only to prolong his political trajectory to the detriment of the interests of the people.

Trump Travels to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates - Telesur English

Article

The U.S. President’s visit comes amid ongoing turmoil in the Middle East. On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in the Saudi capital Riyadh, kicking off his visit to the Middle East amid calls for Washington to play a role in facilitating regional stability.

Trump was greeted at King Khaled International Airport by Prime Minister and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, known as “MBS” and considered Saudi Arabia’s strongman, who extended his hand at the bottom of the plane’s stairs before escorting him to the airport’s Royal Lounge.

The four-day whirlwind tour will take Trump to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, where he intends to meet with Gulf leaders and finalize investment deals worth trillions of U.S. dollars.

The visit comes amid ongoing turmoil in the Middle East: negotiations between the United States and Iran over nuclear issues have shown little progress; Israel’s offensive in Gaza continues; and there are no clear signs of de-escalation in its hostilities with Yemen’s Houthis and Lebanon.

The United States has come under widespread regional criticism for backing Israel’s military escalation and proposing the relocation of Palestinians from Gaza. Regional analysts hope that Washington could play a meaningful role during Trump’s visit by promoting a ceasefire and easing tensions.

With many issues in the Middle East “unsolved,” the need for the United States to coordinate with regional countries appears to be “more pressing than ever,” said Abdulaziz Sager, chairman of the Gulf Research Center. Saudi Arabia marks Trump’s first major official overseas visit of his second term. On his inauguration day in January, Trump said that he would choose Saudi Arabia as his first destination “if Saudi Arabia wanted to buy another 450, or 500 billion.”

White House announces $600 billion Saudi investment in U.S. during Trump visit

If you want something done right then you get your enemy's neighbors to do the dirty work for you.

Full TextPresident Donald Trump on Tuesday praised Saudi Arabia and its leaders after the White House announced a commitment by the kingdom to invest $600 billion in a series of deals with the United States. Trump also announced at an investment forum in Riyadh that he will order the removal of all U.S. sanctions against Syria, “in order to give them a chance at greatness.”

Trump’s speech at the investment conference followed him signing a number of bilateral agreements during a state visit with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Among the agreements secured is a nearly $142 billion defense sales deal, providing the kingdom with “state-of-the-art warfighting equipment and services from over a dozen U.S. defense firms,” the White House said.

That commitment is nearly double Saudi Arabia’s 2025 defense budget, which totaled $78 billion. The White House’s announcement does not say when the defense deal is expected to conclude. Bin Salman, who spoke before Trump at the investment conference, said the aim is to raise the U.S.-Saudi partnership to $1 trillion across the military, security, economic and technological sectors. Economists point out that making good on that investment pledge will be a challenge for the kingdom, which faces sky-high costs for its own Vision 2030 investment ambitions.

Lower global oil prices and big-ticket public spending projects have brought about widening budget deficits for Riyadh. The White House also announced commitments from Saudi digital infrastructure business DataVolt to pursue a $20 billion investment in AI data centers in the U.S.

The total investment figure also includes a combined $80 billion in commitments from DataVolt, Google, Oracle, Salesforce, AMD and Uber to invest in both the U.S. and Saudi Arabia, according to the White House.

dog-screm Leader of portuguese far-right party, Andre Ventura, gets epicly owned.....by a glass of water. It was on camera and it's kinda funny, he felt bad during a speech after drinking water for some reason and buckled over like a bitch so the whole entourage came in to protect him from...something

Comparisions to bolsonaro came instantly but I'm sad to report that he's probably fine.

EDIT: It was gastroesophageal reflux episode with a hypertensive peak, he's fine. Note that mainstream news outlets, who sometimes put the blame on russia or tik tok for the raise of the far right, spent a lot of time on this nothing issue and brought on people from the party to comment on it. Pretty sure that not even the PM last month when he was hospitalized for a few hours, nor the communist party leader in 2022 who had to get heart surgery back then, got this amount of media attention.

Hungary is doing its own version of Foreign Agents Registration Act similar to Georgia (and the US)

Hungary's Fidesz government has proposed a law targeting organizations deemed threats to national sovereignty, primarily those receiving foreign funding and critical of the government. These groups could face financial restrictions, mandatory asset declarations, and increased scrutiny. The government argues this protects Hungary from foreign interference, while critics fear it will stifle dissent and civil society.

The law empowers the Sovereignty Protection Office to blacklist organizations, triggering penalties like loss of tax donation eligibility and stricter oversight of foreign funding. A broad definition of "threats to sovereignty" raises concerns about targeting groups advocating for human rights or environmental protection. Banks will monitor listed organizations' accounts, and the tax authority can suspend funds or demand their return. Critics compare the law to similar measures in Russia, fearing it will restrict freedom of expression and association. The law underscores tensions between national sovereignty and democratic liberties.

Don't get me wrong, there's plenty that unrelentingly bleak but personally:

  • Palestinians are still fighting and continuing the struggle.
  • Good old fashioned solidarity from organising and protest
  • Seeing even the small wins from providing support and effort like messages from people who managed to leave, get medical care, or purchase small solar panels etc (admittedly this is getting harder and less frequent)
  • Seeing the tides turn in attitude to the conflict here in the UK and elsewhere...
  • Even just in terms of ordinary, not overly political people I meet in the street/at the football/in the pub etc there's been a noticable move into the majority of people I talk to not only not buying Israel's bullshit, but also actual loathing for Israel and its obnoxious supporters in the media.
  • Over the last week the vast majority of the newspapers here in the UK have suddenly noticed that Israel is full of shit and are now trying to put some distance between themselves and Israel, taking a more critical tack, and actually talking about Israel's plans with regard to concepts like ethnic cleansing. Don't get me wrong, it's entirely serve-serving and I absolutely do not have to give it to them after they cheerled a genocide for almost two years. But whether it's the talk of America backing off from the same level of Israel support, the fact that the British government actively broke even it's own pathetic arms license removal and is currently in court over breaking arms embargos, or just that they were happy to support the ruse of the 'war' but now Israel is moving into the 'final solution' stage they've got cold feet - the fact is there is less support for Israel here than any time over the last few years.
  • That even though governments like here in the UK and Germany haven't relented on their support of Israel and their crackdown on its enemies and critics, continuing to do so is creating more and more unrest and unpopularity. There's absolutely a lot of controdictions heightening. Here in the UK too, more insidious details are getting leaked to the public too like the fact that our government and judiciary has been collaborating and communicating details of cases with Israel, perverting the course of justice and opening them up to counter-suits, mistrials etc whilst also undermining the government's law and order narrative regarding crushing political dissent.
  • Israel's increasingly expansionist military moves in the region remind me of Aparthied South Africa's desperate attempt to defeat opposition from within by trying to disrupt, overthrow, and control its neighbours. A strategy that only has any hope of working so long as they have the unlimited backing of the US and other highly militarised states. Admittedly, Israel seems to be doing better at it than Aparthied South Africa did, but that kind of regional dependency for domestic stability is always going to be fragile at best and gets harder the more of a pariah state they become. On that point, here's a leaflet about opposing Aparthied South Africa's desperate expansionist wars from the time

What keeps y'all going wrt Palestine?

At this point, both Shit/Pissreal isntrael and the Burger Reich amerikkka are exhibiting every single symptom that I know of of a dying empire grasping at straws. My hope is that Israel's settler colonial project unravels and possibly descends into civil war, with a Western bloc increasingly unable or unwilling to prop it up.

Ultimately and most importantly, though, if the Palestinians haven't given up yet then I sure as hell am not going to give up on them. Keep showing up to your weekly demos as best you can & donate where you can.

Nothing other than the small bits of evidence popping up every now and then showing that the Israelis are at least not literally immortal.

Otherwise I kind of just want to never wake up.

Also I just can't understand why Israel is so fucking important to damn near every country on Earth that they're looking past an actual fucking genocide going on. Why does everyone seem to love Israel so fucking much? Fucking shithole world and a shithole planet. Game was rigged from the start.

Just watched The Settlers documentary and hearing those ppl's ideology peppered with biblical prophecy was disturbing. A truly disgusting movement that needs to be stopped.

Spite, mainly. And agreed, it's been annoying at times to see some people here make excuses for China, in particular, with regards to trading with Israel.
