One of the less shitty parties, Australian Voice, has a name that's so right wing coded I've spoken to at least 2 left leaning people who put them low on the ballot despite being a party that's pro Palestine, anti landlord hoarding empty buildings and seeking to leave AUKUS. Name has real "Voice of America" vibes.

It's so weird, half our right wing parties are things like "the Australian people's party" and half our "left wing" parties are like "superior Australian patriot party"

Yeah discussing it this afternoon after voting, my Lebanese friend said they put them 2nd just below Greens, and the rest of the group was like "oh aren't they racists??" just from the name alone. Then again the group was mostly leftist Labor so expecting them to read might have been too much.

They were one of two parties to be openly anti Israel running in our electorate, Greens and Australia's Voice.

Huh, I didn't know Greens were anti-Israel, I probably would've voted them higher if I had known that. Though yeah, a lot of minor parties in this country really struggle with messaging, probably why so many independents always run rather than join a minor party.

My local Greens member was, but it's not uniform across the party. He's left for the Greens though.

Always frustrating with the greens, half of them are basically socialist in everything but name, and the other half are basically eco-fascists.

Wait until you hear about deceptively named parties in the Weimar republic.

Thats more of a translation issue. Because Bayrische Volkspartei is clearly not a communist party. Volk has a populist conjunction true, the direct translation would be folk instead of people's though.

the left parties presumably evolved out of the "worker's rights but not for aborigines, pacific islanders and chinese!" type of labour activists?

Australia's Voice was founded in 2024 though

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 5 points 13 hours ago

Either that or "Leftist with CIA characteristics"

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 9 points 14 hours ago

Probably a Vox Populi reference. But Vox Australius Vox Satanicus

[–] Aradino@hexbear.net 8 points 14 hours ago

It is such a terrible name

Labor may lose the most valuable seat though

Traditionally Australian prime ministers at the end of their term wade out off the shore and wait for the current to take them.. It is a shame to see them losing a part of their culture.

[–] Aradino@hexbear.net 9 points 16 hours ago

Traditionally it's not the current it's a Chinese submarine

[–] Mardoniush@hexbear.net 11 points 14 hours ago
