Where is the article?

There is currently a ballot initiative registered with Sec State for California Secession.

I don't know about secession. But let's at least stop pumping all that money back to the federal government and keep it for ourselves (or maybe just share some of it with Oregon and Washington State). That would be a really fucking powerful message.

Let's see how those whiney anti-Californian red welfare states cope without us subsidizing their toxic bullshit.

we pay federal taxes to the IRS, not the FTB. How do you see california getting their hands on those taxes?

[–] admin@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

California merchants that collect tax under a CDTFA issued sellers permit are required to report quarterly, some annually. So the state might not have much but at least there's something. Out of state sellers that sell to California costumers are required to collect sales tax as well. I got an email saying they are raising sales taxes statewide on Apr 1 2025. Most increases are around a half percent.

That's sales tax. There is no national sales tax

Nah, bruh, I'm ready to be done, I'm signing that petition to get it put on the ballot. Read the room, any part of the federal government that doesn't explicitly harm people is imploding. Fuck ICE, fuck Nazis, I'm out, and California should be too.

I mean, it's what Russia wants. A fractured, divided US, but at this point, what do we seriously have to lose?

[–] conditional_soup@lemm.ee 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Russia already got what it wants in DJT. The republic is dead, and the largest contributor to NATO is pulling out. It's time to take care of ourselves.

Hi when y’all secede can you grab Washington or at least western Washington on the way out? We’d appreciate it

[–] conditional_soup@lemm.ee 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'd be glad to! Let's both work towards it!

[–] cmbabul@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

I’ll be protesting at every opportunity I’m able

there's been a republican-backed california secession initiative trying to get on the ballot nearly every election since, uh, well the first one I noticed was 25 years ago but I wasn't paying attention before then. wake me up when they try something new.

Can we join Canada and Mexico and form our own version of the E.U.? We'll want allies given a hostile power will be right on our doorstep and I don't want them invading us (I guess we can also join NATO since the divided states won't stay in it).

[–] conditional_soup@lemm.ee 3 points 1 day ago

Who know what form it would ultimately take? I've seen proposals of forming a pacific coast nation, and that seems pretty cool. We'd definitely have trading partners. We'd need to be on good terms with our neighbors, since we share a lot of water with them.

[–] MyOpinion@lemm.ee 11 points 2 days ago

No more money for these MAGA welfare cases.

[–] finitebanjo@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

We may not like the enemies within but that's no excuse to help the enemies outside. I like @ThePowerOfGeek suggestion better, just make a ballot initiative to ban or withhold federal taxes in Cali.

Doing that would by definition make us independent. We would be seizing the Federal governments legally implemented Tax dollars.

But in all seriousness I am a leftist and I support CA independence because it is time. We are just too different then the East and the Mid-West, we have a different climate and a different relationship with our water and our land. That causes us to have a different body politic then them. I mean the only reason CA is part of the US is because the US invaded a sovereign country and took it, then to hold it engaged in a genocide of the native population. We never asked to join, we were forced. But that was the 19'th century and today is the 21'st century. We shouldn't rejoin Mexico and become Mexican again, but we are definitely not "Americans". What are we IDK, but I think we deserve an opportunity to ask that question.

I don't think you understand the complexity of secession and statehood. It doesnt just mean "we dont pay federal taxes." It means a lot more than just that.

[–] hotelbravo722@slrpnk.net 1 points 22 hours ago

I know it does. But the act of stopping the flow of federal dollars to the federal coffers would in itself be seen as an act of rebellion. So if CA decides that it wants to do that, it better be ready to have the ability to back it up.

I view a peacful secession movement beginning with changes in our election system and legislative system to allow for a proportional representative state government, maybe eliminate the idea of a separate executive and place that within the legislature like in a parliamentary system. Then once we have organized ourselves politically we can work towards a separation from the Union. Or we can tell the Federal Gov to get fucked, take their money and shoot our way out. But I think we can agree that might be a bad idea.
