I live by a base with a high civilian contractor population and it's just INSANE how stupid a literal rocket scientist can be.

I think being "smart", combined with an ego, just makes you believe in your own bullshit even harder sometimes. It takes intelligence and humility to arrive at the right solution, and people don't want to admit they're wrong. A big part of intelligence is just making connections, and they use it to pick out the dumbest, most unlikely pathes and believe them because they're "smart".

Maddening.

I know your pain. I also work with government contractors and private sector engineers. The amount of fox news propaganda these old people slurp up astounds me

Engineer here.

Technical reasoning, fact checking, and empathy are different skills.

Just because someone is competent in one of them it is folly to assume they have competency in any others. The same rule also applies to one's self, no exceptions.

In my heart I believe there is more that unites us than divides us. I also know in my head that humanity's emotional buttons are very easy to press. And my gut feeling is that we're all going to have to endure incredible physical and emotional hardship as, one way or another, the root cause of the current polycrysis is eliminated.

And I honestly don't know what will survive once the dust has settled. Something of humanity will survive, I just don't know who and what.

Same. Knew one dude who literally watched Jan 6, live as it happened, a couple desks away from me, and was cheering it on.

Overheard a couple people seriously discussing leaving their federal jobs to join DOGE while i was getting lunch a month or so ago.
