Summary

The US State Department removed the phrase "we do not support Taiwan independence" from its website, prompting backlash from China.

Beijing condemned the change as a "wrong signal" to separatists and urged the US to adhere to the One China policy.

A US spokesperson maintained its commitment to this policy while supporting Taiwan’s participation in global organizations.

Taiwan's Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung welcomed the revision as "positive, Taiwan-friendly wordings."

Many Taiwanese see themselves as a separate nation but prefer maintaining the status quo over declaring independence or unification.

Odd, because I thought the US arming Taiwan sent the signal that it already support them.

Arming a state is just business as usual for the US. We've even armed enemies before, and then fought those same enemies!

Yeah but you can't say that with words, ya dingus. You can only say it with capital.

Well that has stumped me, I have to say. I thought the current US administration were all about cosying up to China on account of - how do I put this? - their governance model being an appealing template.

A person I know who grew up in China (now living in Europe) described US under this new administration as "China with guns".

Russia. You're thinking of Russia. They're still convinced that the Chinese are communists.

Trump: No longer states that we do not support Taiwan independence.

Also Trump: Mulls crippling tariffs because they "stole" the semiconductor industry.
