So far there hasn't been an explanation of why the tunnel was dug. It would be excellent if it turns out that they dug it just to troll Richard Strocher.

There is an explanation. It was part of a feud between Hasidic sects, where a breakaway sect was using the tunnel to break into a building they claimed.
