I believe she's talking about her friendship with Lorraine Hansberry here
To Be Young Gifted and Black was written about Hansberry (To Be Young Gifted and Black was also a Hansberry play). One of my favorite Nina Simone performances is this performance which she dedicated to Hansberry, who died a few years prior. Better than the studio version imo.
