Yeah, yeah, yeah. I forgot to edit the meme. But I mean... it was 2020. It was a great year! Don't you wanna go back?

3 years ago it was... Now 2050 is closer than 1990...

[–] user224@lemmy.sdf.org 18 points 2 years ago (2 children)

This doesn't feel right. 2050 just sounds like a year for some sci-fi about time travel.

[–] intensely_human@lemm.ee 9 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Oh it’s definitely the future now:

  • The year is 2023
  • Hollywood writers are on strike because AI is threatening their jobs
  • A man was arrested with a crossbow. He had been convinced by an AI sexbot to assassinate the Queen of England
  • There is open mechanized warfare in eastern Europe. Robots are a key factor in the fighting, and robotic warfare technology is advancing rapidly in the conflict
  • Within the last month we just recovered the first material from an asteroid
  • We have approximately 8,000 satellites in orbit, a great majority of which use ion thrusters for positioning
  • The US Navy has published video and data proving the existence of alien technology visiting Earth
  • Nuclear fusion reactions have been demonstrated that provide more energy than their inputs
  • IT personnel are encouraged to use new quantum-resistant encryption methods because the advent of quantum computing makes all previous encryption ineffective

The future has creeped up on us slowly, but we’re definitely in it.

The US Navy has published video and data proving the existence of alien technology visiting Earth

They really haven't, they've published videos of unidentified aerial phenomenon, which is most likely either birds, or American domestic or foreign military classified technology, and the only other "proof" has been testimony from individuals in the ranks who are likely off their rocker.

Birds that go 10,000 mph? Sure 🙄

[–] Goodtoknow@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Here's a good breakdown of how it could appear that way through parallax effect https://youtu.be/mfhAC2YiYHs

Yeah I’ve seen the debunk stuff. They consistently ignore the bulk of the evidence.

[–] Goodtoknow@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 years ago

Like what? There's no evidence put forward other than that game of telephone.

[–] Getawombatupya@aussie.zone 2 points 2 years ago

Also temperature records go Brrrr

[–] OutlierBlue@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

So did 2000 when I was a kid.

[–] BudgetBandit@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 years ago

Thank you. I thought I was dumb for thinking of 2056 and 1996.

[–] Canopyflyer@lemmy.world 38 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Amateur...

In Back to the Future, Marty traveled from 1985 to 1955.

If that movie was made today, Marty would travel back to 1993.

[–] Getawombatupya@aussie.zone 3 points 2 years ago

Thanks, I hate it.

[–] Sebeck012 29 points 2 years ago

Not anymore

As pointed out by others, it's actually closer than 1990 was! You're even older! Happy Wednesday!

Uodate the meme you moron.

[–] Deiskos@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

2020 wasn't actually half bad compared to 2022 and 2023

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

2020 is literally my favorite year.

I got a shitty raise, asked for more, got laid off then got more money through pandemic relief than I had ever made in my life.

I hiked over 500 miles, and over 50K ft. Saw family more often than normal, volunteered at a humane society. Built a small business. Leveraged that business into a great new career (that I'm starting to get bored with, but hey, the money is ok).

I dated a crazy person, but the sex was fantastic.

I figured out who my real friends were; it made it easy to let go of old relationships. Like guys, if you were waiting on an apology in 2020 and didn't get it? That person should just be a memory of your life. You could a died, they didn't give a fuck. Let go.

I learned a lot.

Aside from all the elderly and immunocompromised dying, and the occasional other freak COVID cases (like physicsgirl... fuck). 2020 was by far the best year of my life

I'm rather certain that without some enormous unexpected influx of cash, no year in the future will ever come close.

[–] 6mementomori@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

that makes me feel conflicted, I at the same time feel like 2050 is very close and it's weird that it's just as close as a date from the 20th, century, and like 2050 is the far future and I have a better grasp to 1990, but this is probably because I wasn't alive yrt

[–] HubertManne@kbin.social 3 points 2 years ago

yeah. I feel this just makes 2050 feel farther away than I would otherwise think.

[–] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

And once 2025 rolls around in 14ish months you could update the meme to say we're as close to 2060 as 1990
