Image is of Putin and Scholz sitting on opposite ends of a frighteningly long table back in 2022. Folks, the table is gonna get ten feet longer.

The latest round of US-Russian diplomacy is taking place on August 15th in Alaska, where Putin and Trump are meeting in-person to maybe try and bring an end to this godforsaken conflict. While I don't want to totally discount the possibility that they may come to an agreement - you truly never know! - there's a lot stacked against this encounter yielding much of anything.

Russia appears to have demanded a land swap; that Ukraine fully withdraw from Kherson and Zaporozhye oblasts (in exchange for unspecified Russian gains, but probably parts of Sumy and Kharkov) as a precondition for a ceasefire that could perhaps lead to a permanent resolution of the conflict, and Ukraine seems completely unwilling to do anything of the sort, saying that even if they wanted to, the process of just giving up a couple oblasts would take significant time and require referendums. I say that Russia has appeared to demand it, because there's been a lot of confusion - probably in bad faith - about what Russian diplomats and Putin himself have said and what the demands even are. There are some who speculate that Trump will sell out Ukraine and blame Zelensky for refusing to agree with Russian demands, and there are others who say that this just the latest of many examples of the US and Russia meeting up with such fundamental differences that a deal is impossible, and that Trump fully expects to put sanctions on Russia after Putin declines some harebrained American scheme.

Anyway. After the summit, in late August, Putin is due to arrive for a visit to India, at Modi's invitation. Previously, I was unsure exactly what India would do in response to American sanctions pressure, and now we appear to be receiving an answer, as Modi has made public statements that suggest that he is only getting closer to Russia. Fascinatingly, Modi will soon make his first visit to China in seven years at the annual SCO summit at the end of August, and Putin will be heading to China too on September 3rd. There is an increasing amount of dismissal about the potential of BRICS (especially one that contains India), and that dismissal is certainly rather justified, but I am still deeply curious about what developments may occur as the global south braces to face the remaining ~85% of Trump's presidency.

🟢 Hamas: — The intention of the chief of staff of the terrorist occupation army to approve today plans to occupy Gaza City and accelerate military operations within it, is a zionist declaration of the beginning of a new wave of brutal extermination and criminal displacement operations for hundreds of thousands of residents of Gaza City and those displaced to it.

This criminal declaration of committing a major war crime in Gaza City embodies the clearest picture of zionist arrogance, its disregard for international laws, and its insistence on continuing the war of extermination that has been ongoing for more than twenty-two months, under criminal American cover, and amidst shameful international silence and impotence.

Furthermore, the talk about introducing tents into the southern Gaza Strip under the guise of "humanitarian arrangements" is a blatant deception intended to cover up a brutal crime that the occupation is preparing to carry out, at a time when the United Nations confirms its rejection of the occupation's steps in this context, considering them to lack the minimum humanitarian standards and represent a criminal use of humanitarian pressure on civilians to achieve political and military objectives.

What is happening in Gaza is not isolated from the West Bank, where daily incursions, armed settler attacks, and property burning continue, in a scene that reflects the unity of the zionist project based on expelling Palestinians from their land and seizing their rights, leading to the Judaization of Islamic and Christian holy sites.

The steps and attempts by the criminal Netanyahu and his government to displace our people and uproot them from their land are accompanied by the explicit revelation of his true intentions to establish what is called "Greater 'israel'" at the expense of Jordan, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and others. This dangerous plan necessitates and compels support for our people and their resistance, considering it the first line of defense for Arab and Islamic countries against zionist ambitions.

We are at a dangerous moment that calls for a unified national stance to build a comprehensive resistance strategy that confronts the criminal plans aimed at uprooting our people and erasing their identity. Arab and Islamic countries also face the imperative of taking clear steps to confront this fascist entity in light of its declared projects targeting the countries and peoples of the region.

🚨 Intense clashes are taking place east of Gaza City, following the zionist's announcement of the evacuation and occupation of the city.

The IOF has been instructed to evacuate all of Gaza City by early October, preempting the entry of at least four new divisions that include tens of thousands of reserve soldiers.

⚫️ Saraya Al-Quds: — Saraya Al-Quds shows scenes of its fighters from inside one of the advanced combat nodes and striking the invading zionist enemy forces east of Gaza City with mortar shells. Al-Aqsa Flood — Notes: 00:15 - In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. After prayers and peace be upon the Messenger Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Today, brothers, we will talk about the life of the Shadow Man of the resistance, the great leader, Hajj Ramadan. Our leaders, who lived with him, talked to him, and accompanied him, told us that he had great concern towards the Palestinian cause, and he was one of the people who strived day and night for the freedom of Palestine. Among the most distinguishing qualities of the martyr Hajj Ramadan, may Allah have mercy on him is that he was concerned and eager for the Palestinian fighters, especially in Saraya Al-Quds and Al-Qassam Brigades. He was always fulfilling all the needs, just like a compassionate father in his endeavor for his children.

Also, we must not forget that the martyred Hajj Ramadan had a great legacy in combating the enemy. Every bullet, missile, and shell in Gaza has the martyr's mark on it. He is the one who has the favor after Allah Almighty, and his name will remain engraved in our hearts and our minds, and in our resistance actions on the battlefield.

We, in Saraya Al-Quds, from within our advanced combat nodes, we say to the blessed soul of the martyr that this project towards all of Palestine, and what we are doing by striking the enemy forces and crowds east of Gaza, is a dedication to his soul. And we are on the promise, Allah willing, to remain until the liberation of the land and the people from this criminal Nazi occupation. 01:36- God willing, our Lord will empower us. And our effort will not be in vain, day and night. God willing, our Lord will keep us steadfast in the fields of combat and make the youth steadfast and grant us victory. And we, God willing, will continue to fight until the last breath and the last bullet in our weapons. And God willing, we will remain until God grants us victory or martyrdom, God willing.

China just revealed a bunch of new armored vehicles. Probably for their upcoming 80th anniversary Victory Day parade. All the manned ones have what appear to be fancy active protection systems.

I wonder if they will commission aircraft carrier Fujian during the parade/celebrations as well xigma-male

[–] CyborgMarx@hexbear.net 2 points 2 hours ago (2 children)

Can't say I'm impressed, in light of the developments and revelations brought about by the Ukraine war, these vehicles will get torn to shreds by drone and drone-linked artillery warfare

The current meta of warfare is solidly against IFVs and these small glass cannon fire support systems, everything points to the need for further development in long-range missile technology, drones, anti-aircraft systems, mobile long-range artillery, anti-submarine defense, ship killer missiles and stealth air superiority fighters

It's like China saw the US Stryker/IFV fiasco and thought to themselves "Yeah, we should step on that rake too" total waste of resources

Is China planning to invade a small country and engage in intense urban counterinsurgency operations? Cause that's all these overgunned personnel carriers would be good for

[–] xiaohongshu@hexbear.net 1 points 24 minutes ago* (last edited 22 minutes ago)

The point of showing all these new equipments during the parade is to signal the national priority in shifting investment into the military industrial sector, as overcapacity in other industries and the broader economic downturn in China are already causing stagnation and unemployment.

You see it as a “waste of resources”, that might be correct, but from the government perspective, it’s job creation for the high youth unemployment. This isn’t anything new - after the 2008 GFC, China invested heavily in infrastructure building to stimulate the economy as a slump in Western consumption took a toll of the Chinese export-oriented economy. As a result, thousands of new cities were built but there are hardly enough people to live in them.

During that moment, it was crucial to prevent the economy from going into a recession (to keep people employed and the GDP numbers up), but the massive misallocation of capital and resources only becomes a problem years down the road and a major problem the government are dealing with right now.

The same happened also during the 2015 effort to reduce excess productive capacity in the export sector (light industries). To eliminate excess capacity, the government prioritized green technology and alternative (renewable) energy in the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020) to force factories and companies to shift investment. However, nobody expected that China develops at such rapid pace that even the green tech are making losses these days. Chinese solar panels already dominated 90% of the world’s market and the bitter price wars are making every company and their suppliers losing money. The tariffs imposed by foreign countries also made China’s EV difficult to gain profit, and exacerbated by a weak domestic consumption (massive subsidies were given out to entice people to trade in their cars, but the effect has reached diminishing return). So the solar panel/EV route is also on its way of consolidation and reduction of excess capacity.

So, as the infrastructure investment-led growth is winding down, and export-led growth is taking a hit from Trump’s ongoing tariffs, militarization is going to be the next phase in China’s national economic policy. Also understand that China isn’t doing this alone, the EU and the US arguably are militarizing at an even more intense pace.

We’re going to see a lot of excess military equipments over the next decade, and they have to be get rid of somehow eventually.

Idk whats the point of this comment

For one these platforms were already in development before the ukraine war happened and China's armor platforms needed next gen production. Were they supposed to scrap them because drones? And on that matter its literally China, its absurd to think they are lagging behind in military drone tech, doctorine and applications, let alone productions. If drones is the name of the game, worrying that its chinas platforms that will get shredded by drones more so than their adverseries by chinese drones is a bit alternate reallity stuff. These paltforms arent even obsolete or anything. Thats a simplistic understanding of whet the ukraine war shows, a war that still sees them used en mass and nato proccuring new ones at increased rates.

China is also expanding as an arms exporter and a lot of countries need cheaper modern armor platforms.

China also massively invests in anti-drone, EW etc platforms and doctorine and we have little idea where these stand relatively.

Most importantly these platforms represent a very small focus and investment for the PLA. Ground forces are the bottom of the barrel in terms of R&D and platform development and introduction. PLAAR, PLAN, PLARF are getting all the important new toys en mass on a world leading build up and manufacturing scale. Even among these photos from stuff getting into Beijing in the last couple of days for the parade the tanks and armor are secondary news. There were like 6 not seen before types anti-ship and cruise missiles. New UACVs and CCAs, huge ICBMs and UUVs. New air defense systems without official designation.

There are gonna be dozens of missile, AD, Air and ground platforms in the parade the world hasnt officialy seen before, some no one had an idea they existed. You should be impressed cause you are getting everything you are asking for in your comment and more from PLA development and buildup. Sure we can be doomers here until China commissions the USS Enterprise or smth but other than that there is absolutely no reason to be a cynical even in stuff like this come on

[–] CyborgMarx@hexbear.net 1 points 1 hour ago

Were they supposed to scrap them because drones?

Yes, sunk cost fiascos are not justified because new discrediting developments happened after the project started, that's the definition of dogmatic rigidity in war planning and defense development

worrying that its chinas platforms that will get shredded by drones more so than their adverseries by chinese drones is a bit alternate reallity stuff

The point wasn't that China wouldn't or doesn't have drones, the point is those IFVs are going to get shredded by enemy drones, regardless of China's capacity in other weapon types

a war that still sees them used en mass and nato proccuring new ones at increased rates

Yeah, the dipshits of NATO are blind to the incredible casualty rates of their IFVs and refuse to adjust, the Russians also experienced severe IFV losses early in the war to Ukrainian drones and ATGMs, before they learnt to hold them back or phase them out in favor of long-range artillery and overwhelming drone coverage

China is also expanding as an arms exporter and a lot of countries need cheaper modern armor platforms.

It's a useless export and could lead to mal-development among the inventories of vulnerable nations who when faced with western aggression would see these oversized infantry taxis destroyed easily

Most importantly these platforms represent a very small focus and investment for the PLA

That's not a justification for the project, it's still wasted resources

There are gonna be dozens of missile, AD, Air and ground platforms in the parade the world hasnt officialy seen before, some no one had an idea they existed. You should be impressed cause you are getting everything you are asking for in your comment and more from PLA development and buildup

I'm not dismissing the entire Chinese defense industry, I'm trashing a single badly thought out project, even the Chinese will occasionally make mistakes concerning weapon development, tho the fact this project got the greenlight, proves there's some serious rigidity and ignorance among top brass concerning modern developments in armored warfare

"Dress in your most elegant clothes, style your hair well, put on perfume, and smile for the photo, because you might be the next martyr.” - The martyr Nour Jarrar

Yesterday, August 16, marked the third martyrdom anniversary of four heroic resistance fighters who remained true to the path of the founder and commander, Jamil Al-Amouri. The sons of Jenin, Nour Jarrar, Raed Abu Seif, Saleh Ammar, and Amjad Al-Azmi ascended to martyrdom after the occupation forces stormed Jenin Camp and were met with fierce clashes by the resistance fighters.

The first martyr, Nour Jarrar was always active in the life of resistance. He was always present in community events and funeral processions for the martyrs, he eventually joined the Saraya Al-Quds brigade to continue the path towards liberation. Throughout his life, he was repeatedly arrested by the Palestinian Authority. When Nour was just 14 years old, the PA arrested him after he attempted to carry out a stabbing operation at the Jalameh checkpoint. Later in his life, he was arrested by the occupation forces; after his release from the occupation's prison, he quickly saved up money just to purchase a rifle and return to his life of resistance. Nour embodied himself as one of the first fighters in Jenin Camp to rise on the path of Al-Amouri. In response to this, the occupation forces would threaten him and his family to give up his resistance activities. After the martyrdom of Jamil Al-Amouri, the Palestinian Authority offered him to hand over his weapon in exchange for a pardon. However, Nour paid no attention to these negotiations and cowardly tactics, Nour decided to remain on the path of Al-Amouri and to never surrender himself, honoring the phrase "Victory or Martyrdom."

The second martyr, Nour's close companion, Amjad Al-Azmi, was also a resistance fighter. Amjad and Nour would do everything together, from traveling to resisting. With secrecy, Nour would help Amjad in manufacturing and gathering explosive devices. Amjad was martyred while attempting to save the life of the fighter Nour Jarrar, who was shot by a zionist sniper. When Amjad reached Nour, he was shot by the occupation forces, ascending as a martyr on the battlefield beside his comrade, Nour Jarrar.

The third martyr, Raed Abu Seif sought martyrdom and by the will of God, he was honored with it.

The last martyr, Saleh Ammar, ascended to martyrdom after confrontations with the invading occupation forces in his neighborhood.

The mother of the martyr Nour Jarrar says that Nour's wish was to visit and eat breakfast in Al-Quds and pray in Al-Aqsa Mosque, and on August 16th, he rose as a martyr on the road to Al-Quds. Today, the bodies of the two companions and resistance fighters, Nour Jarrar and Amjad Al-Azmi remain detained by the occupation forces, preventing them from having a proper burial.

Glory to the martyrs.

"[Russia and China] are basically natural enemies [...] China needs Russia land (sic) [...] but because of pure stupidity they were driven together," laments Trump in an interview about the "natural friction" that even a "minor student of history" would have recognized and exploited.

Given that this was on Trump's mind following the summit, I'd be pretty sure all that talk during the conference about "Arctic cooperation" was likely about US propositions of shutting out non-Arctic Sea states like China (and potentially others) from the region, since China potentially developing the Arctic corridor through the Siberian coast would completely bypass the whole Canada-Greenland-Panama annexations scheme to control global shipping lanes from the "roaming Chinese and Russian ships" that Trump had been publicly obsessed over back in January.

[–] sodium_nitride@hexbear.net 20 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

Russia and China are basically natural enemies

Which think tank fed this thought into Trump and how the hell did anyone even come to the conclusion?

[–] xiaohongshu@hexbear.net 2 points 45 minutes ago (1 children)

I don’t think China mind taking back Vladivostok (Haisenwei) when the time is right. Just need to wait until Russia is sufficiently weakened. It’s one of the reasons why the Northeast (China)/Far East (Russia) remained underdeveloped for years due to the distrust between the two countries, despite the Northeast being the center of heavy industries in China.

[–] sodium_nitride@hexbear.net 2 points 26 minutes ago (1 children)

Some border disputes over the decades are expected, but calling China and Russia as "natural enemies" seem entirely unfounded.

[–] xiaohongshu@hexbear.net 1 points 18 minutes ago* (last edited 16 minutes ago)

Yeah maybe not “natural enemies” but I guess the point is that there is a long historical feud between the two countries that makes them difficult to trust one another.

Kind of like China and Vietnam, both communist countries but really distrust one other.

Before that, China and the DPRK (Kim Jong-il really disliked China and even purged/exiled his pro-China son Kim Jong Nam and recalled the younger Kim Jong Un from Switzerland to groom him as heir apparent. Kim Jong Nam would eventually be assassinated in Malaysia in 2017).

And before that, China and the USSR (both Mao and Deng were in full agreement that the USSR had to go, and allying with the US was seen as a major step toward tilting the balance of power against the USSR).

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 15 points 7 hours ago

Which think tank

If the west had properly integrated Russia at any point between like 1991 and 2014 this could've been reality but they couldn't resist looting the country instead

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 4 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

The looting wasn't even the problem. The current Russian financial and political elite were compradors. The problem was that they kept telling Russia that they would always be the enemy and would never be allowed to be part of the hegemony.

[–] xiaohongshu@hexbear.net 27 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago) (1 children)

I can see this happening with Europe, but honestly that’s never going to happen with the US around.

If you look at the US and the USSR (and later Russia), they practically offer the same thing: raw materials, energy, highly developed military industrial complex and highly educated workforce.

While Russia would mesh well with Europe’s lack of energy sovereignty for its high tech industries, such an integration would cause the US to lose its influence over its European allies/vassals, and with US corporations (especially its military industrial complex) getting outcompeted by Russia’s much cheaper but no less developed technical expertise and skilled labor force. Surely the US would not want NATO/Europe to be armed with Soviet weaponry because even from a business perspective, that’s less profit for them.

As such, the only fate that awaits Russia is to be subjugated by the empire. There can be no alliance between the two, so long as Russia wants to remain sovereign. Europe did extend some level of economic cooperation with Russia, e.g. Nord Stream, then suddenly, the Ukrainian civil war happened.

This was also why Nixon had to go to China in the 1970s, when the US had been diplomatically isolated from the rest of the world during that time. China’s vast labor power complemented what the US lacked, and such a marriage of convenience was key toward tilting the balance of power against the USSR in the later decade.

[–] vovchik_ilich@hexbear.net 9 points 7 hours ago

For a long time I failed to understand why after 1991 the west didn't just plunder all of the capital of Russia and establish its own bourgeoisie, and instead allowed there for a Russian bourgeoisie to appear and solidify in power. I thought of it as a mistake they had made during the chaotic auctioning of the country to the most corrupt bidder. Now I believe that this fertile ground for investments and exploitation wasn't taken not because they didn't manage to, but because the US decided it was against its interests.

As a formerly communist country, new capitalist Russia couldn't entirely be deindustrialized and turned into a colony again, the people simply wouldn't allow it and revolution would happen again. The only possibility was for it to remain fairly industrialized. But allowing a capitalist developed country to simply emerge and economically join with its natural closest neighbors, Europe and China, while being a vast pool of resources and skilled labour, would have been too much of a threat to the US. So the decision was that if the US couldn't coup the entire means of production and leave Europe aside (which Europe wouldn't allow), Russia had to grow its own oligarchy to be antagonized and geopolitically opposed to the rest of Europe.

[–] mkultrawide@hexbear.net 26 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

Also need a big bad in Europe, otherwise it gets harder to justify the continued existence of NATO and the defense spending that comes along with that.

Notice how nails just constantly appears every couple years for the US military hammer to strike down. From Afghanistan to the Ukraine to Occupied Palestine to Latin America. It's so obvious once you realize that none of these are legitimate military excursions, they are busywork for the massive military machine that always needs something to feed into its maw. There can never be peace until American Imperialists are defeated and their armies destroyed or collapsed. Until then there will be war. It's very frustrating that only DPRK and Yemen seems to get this, standing up to the perpetual beast of war instead of hiding from it.

It's not going to go away. It's going to travel the world eating everything one-by-one, feasting in an orgy of perpetual war until nations band together and stand up to it. Every time China says it wants a "good relationship" with the US and states they don't believe in "geopolitical blocs" the American feast is extended 10 years.

If Trump wanted to make the Russian deal work, he could force Zelenskyy to submit or replace him. Zelenskyy's opinions are meaningless.

It's that time of the month again: guess who's back in the hospital.

Bolsonaro's tests show residual signs of lung infections, esophagitis, and gastritis, according to medical report. A medical bulletin released on Saturday by DF Star Hospital in Brasília reports that tests performed on former President Jair Bolsonaro showed signs of lung infections, esophagitis, and gastritis.

According to the document, the tests revealed “residual images of two recent lung infections possibly related to episodes of bronchoaspiration.”

“The endoscopy showed persistence of esophagitis and gastritis, now less intense, but requiring continued medication,” the medical bulletin said. The doctors' recommendation is that the former president continue treatment for high blood pressure and reflux and take preventive measures against bronchoaspiration.

Bolsonaro left house arrest early to undergo blood and urine tests, an endoscopy, and an abdominal CT scan. He has already left the hospital and has not spoken to the press. According to his lawyers, the former president has been experiencing reflux and hiccups.

The president of the First Panel of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Cristiano Zanin (former lawyer of Lula da Silva), cheduled the first session of the criminal trial for the attempted coup d'état for September 2. Bolsonaro is accused by the Attorney General's Office (PGR) of being the “main orchestrator, greatest beneficiary, and author” of actions aimed at disrupting the democratic rule of law in order to remain in power even after his defeat by Lula in 2022.

Also this:

The former first lady, Bolsonaro's wife, Michelle Bolsonaro called President Lula da Silva a drunkard and a boozer, saying that Jair Bolsonaro, who is ineligible, will return. She also called northeasterners idiots for voting for the Workers' Party and the left several times, saying this while visiting a sparsely attended event in northeastern Brazil.

At the event in Natal, the former first lady said that it “hurts Bolsonaro's soul” not to be able to leave his home, but that he will return and be elected president in 2026. “He is at home, but he is there like a crab in a can, waiting to return to work, travel, and win the 2026 elections,” she said.

According to recent polls Michelle has the highest voting intention among the Bolsonaro family members listed as potential candidates against Lula in 2026. She has 20% of the votes, against 49% for the Workers' Party candidate. It is believed that most of her votes would come from Brazil's protestant population, but she is notoriously rejected by a large portion of Jair Bolsonaro's male voters.

Earlier this year, even members of Bolsonaro's inner circle, such as former aide Col. Mauro Cid and former communications secretary Fabio Wajngarten, said they would rather vote for Lula than Michelle.

“Man, if Michelle tries to enter politics, in a high position, she will be destroyed, because I think she has a lot of dirty stuff... not just dirty, but her personality, they will use everything against her to destroy her.” said the colonel. Wajngarten replied: “I prefer to vote for Lula.” Cid then said: “Same.”

Organizations from the African continent launch day of solidarity with the Alliance of Sahel States

As the second anniversary of the Alliance of Sahel States approaches on September 16, 2025, the Pan Africanism Today Secretariat (PAT), composed of over 70 people’s movements and organizations across Africa, has issued a call to action, urging all progressive forces across the continent and around the globe to stand in solidarity with the AES. According to PAT, this would entail publicly declaring solidarity with the peoples of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, amplifing the political significance of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), and exposing the role of imperialist powers and ECOWAS in undermining their sovereignty.

Movements are urged to organize mass mobilizations, protests, and other coordinated actions on September 16, 2025 to mark the AES’s second anniversary, as well as host educational events, forums, and teach-ins to deepen political understanding of the struggle. Cultural and creative expressions, along with bold acts of agitation and disruption, should be used to communicate the AES’s vision, challenge neocolonialism, and integrate solidarity into ongoing political activities.
