Image is from this article, of a Chilean copper quarry.

Title is a reference to Trump's social media post about copper, which was, as usual, mostly deranged.

Trying to follow Trump's administration is pretty difficult, but as of right now, he is threatening 30% tariffs on Mexico and the EU starting on August 1st, as well as new tariff announcements on a bunch of other countries (including, bizarrely, a 50% tariff on Brazil), and also apparently a 50% tariff on copper, which the US imports half its supply of and is, of course, a very important metal in many applications.

I'm not sure what the plan is to bring back domestic copper production beyond hoping that it just sorta works out, but prominent copper producers, such as Chile and Canada, seem both concerned and confused. Reuters had a line that made me chuckle:

Boric said he was awaiting official communication from the U.S. government, including whether the tariffs would include copper cathodes, and questioned "whether this will actually be implemented or not."

Big mood, Boric.

Breaking | In an urgent and important press statement, Gaza Health Ministry reports and appeals to the world:

⭕️Unprecedented numbers of starved civilians of all ages are arriving at emergency departments in severe exhaustion and fatigue.

⭕️We warn that hundreds of severely emaciated Palestinians are at imminent risk of death due to hunger and their bodies’ inability to endure any longer.

Gaza Update Summary (July 16th - July 19th, 2025)

🚨 The past four days have been defined by a dual crisis of escalating IOF massacres and a catastrophic, deepening famine. IOF operations systematically targeted civilians in designated "safe zones" and at aid distribution points, particularly in Khan Younis and Rafah, while the north faced relentless demolition. We saw the famine's death toll rise, sparking popular protests against aid hoarders as the humanitarian situation collapsed completely.

Wednesday, July 16th: The slaughter of civilians was marked by a horrific massacre at an American aid distribution center in Rafah, where over 20 martyrs ascended due to suffocation and gas, including those on a "pre-approved list." This pattern was repeated throughout the day, targeting the displaced and hungry in tents in Mawasi Khan Younis and Nusseirat. Shelters were not spared, as the IOF bombed the Abu Helou school in Bureij, resulting in 4 martyrs, and struck the historic Latin Church in Gaza City, resulting in 3 martyrs from the Christian community. In Jabalia, the entire Shahab famil (father, mother, and their five daughters) was annihilated under the rubble of their home. 94 martyrs ascended and over 370 were wounded. 26 aid seekers were martyred as well.

Thursday, July 17th: The crisis of starvation reached a terrifying new peak, with children like Zain Al-Dremeili ascending due to malnutrition and reports of people collapsing from hunger in the streets. The bombardment escalated on Khan Younis, with airstrikes, artillery, and demolitions. IOF drones targeted tents in Mawasi. New evacuation orders were issued in Jabalia, and a strike resulted in 8 martyrs near Tawam roundabout who were protecting an aid convoy. At least 50 martyrs ascended on Thursday.

Friday, July 18th: The deepening famine ignited a "Revolution of the Hungry", with citizens storming merchants' warehouses in search food, only to be met with IOF drone fire. The IOF's campaign of genomicde continued with the massacre of the Abu Sahloul family in Khan Younis, where at least 8 were martyred under the rubble of their home. The famine claimed another life as the infant Sanaa Al-Lahham ascended, while in Deir al-Balah, 5 more were martyred in the chaos of an aid delivery. Further, the IOF continued to bomb tents, such as in Mawasi. A strike in Jabalia Al-Nazla claimed 5 more martyrs, while a bombing of a school saw two more. Another 50 martyrs on Friday.

Saturday, July 19th: Between the famine and bombing, another day of horrific massacres against entire families. We saw the annihilation of the Aql family in Nusseirat, where a single strike resulted in 12 martyrs, mostly women and children. The slaughter of the hungry reached a new low with over 60 martyrs ascending, including 35 aid seekers killed by IOF fire near the "Netzarim" axis. The famine continued to claim children's lives, including Joad Al-Anqar and Yahya Al-Najjar, as the IOF expanded its operations to the sea, raiding the Gaza beach and abducting several fishermen. Northern Gaza saw intense bombing in Sheikh Radwan and Jabalia, as well as martyrs killed while attempting to reach their homes. Today, over 116 martyrs have ascended so far, including 38 aid seekers.

Over 310 martyrs ascended in the last four days, amidst international and global silence despite calls for escalation and action. #GazaSummary

The concept of defensive weaponry being not purely defensive has been well understood since the ABM treaty, signed in... 1972 between the Soviet Union and United States, over 50 years ago.

[–] Z_Poster365@hexbear.net 38 points 1 day ago

If the US wasn't giving air cover and air defense for Israel, Israel never would have dared attack Iran. Defensive capabilities lessen the ability for your enemies to respond, which emboldens you to attack without repercussions

yesterday zei squirrel went off on the absurdity of this argument

https://xcancel.com/zei_squirrel/status/1946356344765968642

tweet:

the whole "no, I recognize the genocide, but Iron Dome is defensive so we must fund it" line is just astonishing. "No, I get Nazi Germany is bad, but we must send them the anti-air defenses they need to keep doing their genocidal war." It is solely because the US and NATO give them this military infrastructure that they are doing the genocide in Gaza and launched their wars on Lebanon, Yemen, Iran and Syria.

Any child knows this. Any 6 year old knows this, and of course AOCIA and Bernie Sanders know this. And the fact that they keep lying about it shows just how much contempt they have for you.

Btw ask Bernie Sanders and AOCIA if they support sending an Iron Dome system to Gaza and Iran.

Go ahead and ask them. Ask them if they support sending Patriots and Iron Dome there to defend their civilians, and watch them fly into Zionist rage-rants: OMG YOU WANT US TO GIVE THAT TO KHAMAS AND THE MULLAHS? OMG

Or how about Russia. Ask Bernie Sanders and AOCIA if they believe the US and NATO should send Russia Iron Dome and Patriots to help defend their civilians. Why not? I thought you care about protecting civilians, so why would you not want to protect Palestinians in Gaza, and Iranian and Russian civilians?

Oh you just meant the Jews in Israel, the only ones you consider to be human, in fact super-human, Ubermenschen.

But it's even worse. All of this is pure deflection because it's not just about Iron Dome, AOCIA and Bernie Sanders consider all the jets and tanks and missiles to be "defensive weaponry" as well, and in their purely symbolic resolutions they knew would fail only targeted a tiny irrelevant percentage of larger caliber bombs slated to be sent in the future, and sold this as "WE ARE TRYING TO STOP ALL FUNDS AND ARMS TO NETANYAHUS EXTREMIST GOVERNMENT" to fool their base into thinking that they actually support that: https://x.com/zei_squirrel/status/1870599903812198837

Bernie Sanders and AOCIA are both totally committed genocidal Zionists who fully support the genocide, but know that this goes against their own base, the overwhelming majority of democrats and the majority of the broader public, so they have to lie, deceive, do propaganda, and feign pseudo-radical poses and pretenses.

But it will not work. Everyone can see what they really are. And they will not forget.

New details are emerging with regards to the missions carried out by the US Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle aircraft deployed to Jordan on October 2024, which returned to RAF Lakenheath yesterday, July 18th 2025. These were the F-15Es equipped with 6 seven shot APKWS laser guided rocket pods for intercepting one way attack drones, for a total of 42 guided rockets per aircraft. The planes show various signs of wear and use, and feature nose art depicting horror movie characters and various interesting kill maks. By all indications they were very busy intercepting one way attack drones from Iran during the 12 day Israel/US-Iran war, but also bombing targets, who or what is unknown (Iran and Yemen are the obvious options).

Source article

Picture of F-15E Strike Eagle with 42 APKWS rockets, for illustrative purposes:

According to the markings, the squadron of 8x F-15E Strike Eagle aircraft:

  • Shot down 115 one way attack drones using APKWS laser guided rockets (only 6 aircraft feature kill marks).
  • Executed 54 electronic attacks, lightning bolt symbol (likey jamming the guidance systems of one way attack drones, same red colour as APKWS markings)
  • Launched 28 JASSM stealth high altitude subsonic cruise missiles. (only 7 aircraft feature kill marks).
  • One aircraft conducted 4 high value electronic attacks, possibly against incoming surface to air missiles or radars tracking the aircraft, black lighting bolts.
  • Dropped over 100 JDAM guided bombs. (Haven't done an exact count)

A squadron of 8 aircraft taking out around 170 one way attack drones via hard kill (APKWS rockets) and soft kill (jamming) methods is, well, a lot. Especially if these were the drones that managed to make it to Jordan. I think over 1000 drones were fired throughout the entire war, with one impact.

Big question is who were they launching the JASSMs at, they were likely bombing Yemen with JDAMs, did they use JASSMs there too, or were these fired at Iran?

The 42 APKWS laser guided rockets per aircraft loadout has also been put on F-16CJ block 50 aircraft at Shaw Air Force base, in the last few days.

What is APKWS?

[–] Pentacat@hexbear.net 25 points 1 day ago

So this is the war that the US and the west claim they didn’t directly participate in?

[–] Kaputnik@hexbear.net 19 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The nose markings kind of lose impact when you put 50 different emojis on the front of the plane

Brian Berletic on twitter: America is dispersing Pacific assets in preparation for war with China

https://xcancel.com/BrianJBerletic/status/1946385847206772765

tweet (pics not included)

🇺🇸🇨🇳 US is Not "Retreating" From Asia-Pacific, It's Dispersing Assets, Moving Others Back Before Conflict

  • The notion that the US is somehow "retreating" in the Asia-Pacific region is highly flawed - what appears to be a pull out is similar to the US moving assets out of the Middle East just ahead of US strikes on Iran;

  • The US knows much of its assets inside the first island chain will be destroyed by Chinese counterattacks, and has spent years developing a military posture utilizing longer ranges and greater dispersement;

  • This is meant to make US assets more survivable, not in any way a military posture of withdrawal;

  • Wishful thinking regarding US warmongering against China will end the same way it did regarding Russia in 2014-2022 and Iran earlier this year, in a conflict that somehow "surprised" many despite decades of policy papers and preparations made openly and continuously to provoke it;

[–] BynarsAreOk@hexbear.net 6 points 18 hours ago

in a conflict that somehow "surprised" many despite decades of policy papers and preparations made openly and continuously to provoke it;

I do not know where he is getting this from though. The literal only reason why Ukraine is uncomfortable a subject for the west is Ukraine's nazism and specialy the 2014 Maidan coup.

No such issues with China, you can say any of the US allies nearby are victims without such a heavy conscious very easily. They can claim China has sided with Russia and Iran which is also true. They can claim China "weaponizes" their industry and who will disagree? Do westerners like buying cheap shit from China? Only because they don't know where it comes from and can't afford any alternatives(there are none) etc.

Finaly remember the "Russia is only a gas station" narrative, they thought no way the Putler's backyard gas station could have a functioning army. Nobody is going to claim China is a just an Alibaba warehouse therefore it was inconceivable they would destroy all US allies etc. China is widely understood to be both an economic and military superpower, Russia definitely was not and still isn't.

I think Brian is one of the better Ukraine war grifters, but he is too trying to preach to the choir here(Russian chudsphere) saying "hey this new thing will be exactly like this old thing which you also like!" without being quite critical here.

[–] mkultrawide@hexbear.net 15 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

It's a shame that there aren't any conflict theaters to which China could send military aid to keep the US bogged down.

[–] BynarsAreOk@hexbear.net 5 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

The problem imo isn't necessarily the prospect of this spiraling into some WW3 after all it can come and go as quickly as some sort of skirmish around Taiwan where both sides go negotiate within 2 weeks.

The issue for me is also how far and how committed China is to compromising and dealing with the US. In that aspect its not just the US as the enemy but Dengism as a whole, the entire belief system that just threw away the idea of any sort of ideological struggle against capitalism. The worst case outcome here is China will only see the current US admin as the enemy and not west vs east or even capitalism vs socialism.

Say this war happens under Trump what are the chances Xi or someone else will gladly shake the hands of the next US president? We know the answer e.g Kissinger etc. Trump 1 was already bad yet they did an 180 and accepted Biden etc... They don't send any aid because they also believe they can always negotiate with the next president etc.

[–] companero@hexbear.net 27 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Yeah, I think it's why Trump made Israel stop attacking Iran, and why he is making genuine efforts to end the war in Ukraine (on the US's terms).

Every day China grows more powerful. The window for war is closing fast. If it does happen, it's almost certainly going to be during Trump's term.

[–] SevenSkalls@hexbear.net 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Sounds like he's given up on ending the war and is just pawning it on Europe lol.

Also relevant by Berletic, from last week: US Still Dangerous Despite Limits of Military Production (41 min video, with links in description)

*his article by the same title: https://journal-neo.su/2025/07/09/us-still-dangerous-despite-limits-of-military-production/

**those "limits of military production," per his earlier article in Februrary, are basically "the profit motive has more say than the state department"

excerpt:

In fact, the majority of the problems identified by the report involved private industry and its unwillingness to meet national security requirements because they were not profitable.

For example, the report attempts to explain why many companies across the US DIB [defense industrial base] lack advanced manufacturing capabilities, claiming:

Many elements of the traditional DIB have yet to adopt advanced manufacturing technologies, as they struggle to develop business cases for needed capital investment.

In other words, while adopting advanced manufacturing technologies would fulfill the purpose of the US Department of Defense, it is not profitable for private industry to do so.

Despite virtually all the problems the report identifies stemming from private industry’s disproportionate influence over the US DIB, the report never identifies private industry itself as a problem.

If private industry and its prioritization of profits is the central problem inhibiting the DIB from fulfilling its purpose, the obvious solution is nationalizing the DIB by replacing private industry with state-owned enterprises. This allows the government to prioritize purpose over profits. Yet in the United States and across Europe, the so-called “military industrial complex” has grown to such proportions that it is no longer subordinated to the government and national interests, but rather the government and national interests are subordinated to it.

[–] companero@hexbear.net 23 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think Russia's defense industry being predominantly state-owned is part of what allows them to compete and win against the entire West combined.

Privatized equivalents favor expensive flashy toys over pragmatism and industrial efficiency.

[–] iie@hexbear.net 19 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Yeah, that seems to be Berletic's take as well.

excerpt:

In Russia, the defense industry exists to serve national security. While one might believe this goes without saying, across the collective West, the defense industry, like all other industries in the West, exists solely to maximize profits.

To best serve national security, the defense industry is required to maintain substantial surge capacity – meaning additional, unused factory space, machines, and labor on standby if and when large surges in production are required in relatively short periods of time. Across the West, in order to maximize profits, surge capacity has been ruthlessly slashed, deemed economically inefficient. Only rare exceptions exist, such as US 155 mm artillery shell production.

While the West’s defense industry remains the most profitable on Earth, its ability to actually churn out arms and ammunition in the quantities and quality required for large-scale conflict is clearly compromised by its maximization of profits.

The result is evident today as the West struggles to expand production of arms and ammunition for its Ukrainian proxies.

The NDIS report would note:

Prior to the invasion, weapon procurements for some of the in-demand systems were driven by annual training requirements and ongoing combat operations. This modest demand, along with recent market dynamics, drove companies to divest excess capacity due to cost. This meant that any increased production requirements would require an increase in workforce hours in existing facilities—commonly referred to as “surge” capacity. These, in turn, were limited further by similar down-stream considerations of workforce, facility, and supply chain limitations.

Costs are most certainly a consideration across any defense industry, but costs cannot be the primary consideration.

A central element of Russia’s defense industry is Rostec, a massive state-owned enterprise under which hundreds of companies related to national industrial needs including defense are organized. Rostec is profitable. However, the industrial concerns organized under Rostec serve purposes related to Russia’s national interests first and foremost, be it national health, infrastructure or security.

Because Russia’s defense industry is purpose-driven, it produced military equipment because it was necessary, not because it was profitable. As a result, Russia possessed huge stockpiles of ammunition and equipment ahead of the Special Military Operation (SMO) in February 2022. In addition to this, Russia maintained large amounts of surge capacity enabling production rates of everything from artillery shells to armored vehicles to expand quickly over the past 2 years.

Only relatively recently have Western analysts acknowledged this.

The New York Times in its September 2023 article, “Russia Overcomes Sanctions to Expand Missile Production, Officials Say,” admits Russian arms production of not only missiles, but also armored vehicles and artillery shells have exceeded prewar levels. The article estimates that Russia is producing at least seven times more ammunition than the US and its Western allies combined.

Despite this, Western analysts now claim Russian production will “plateau” as the limits of surge capacity are reached and new facilities and sources of raw materials are required.

The Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) in a February 2024 article titled, “Russian Military Objectives and Capacity in Ukraine Through 2024,” regarding ammunition production would claim:

…the Russian MoD does not believe it can significantly raise production in subsequent years, unless new factories are set up and raw material extraction is invested in with a lead time beyond five years.

But because Russia’s industrial base is purpose-driven rather than profit-driven, additional facilities are already being built despite the longer-term economic inefficiency of doing so.

US government-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty in a November 2023 article titled, “Satellite Images Suggest Russia Is Ramping Up Production Capacity For Its War Against Ukraine,” reported that Russia was not only expanding production at existing facilities but was also developing new factories producing warplanes, combat helicopters, military drones, and guided munitions.

Much like in The Spectator yesterday there was also a piece attacking Zelensky in the FT 2 days ago

Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused of authoritarian slide after anti-corruption raids

Check this out

“Taking advantage of the war, Zelenskyy is making his first, yet confident, steps towards corrupt authoritarianism,” wrote the editorial board of Ukrainian Truth, Ukraine’s most-read online news outlet.

“A crackdown on the country’s most famous anti-corruption crusader can’t be happening without at least the silent approval from President Zelenskyy, if not active permission,” the English-language Kyiv Independent said.

The president’s top political rivals followed suit. Kyiv’s mayor Vitali Klitschko warned that “under the guise of war, the authorities persecute those deemed inconvenient: political opponents, local governments, experts, journalists and activists”.

To my knowledge this didn't start recently but it's nice that the Ukraine overton window moved to where I can send libs shit like this about Z-man
