Yesterday on the street, returning from a meeting, I noticed a very cute cat. Of course, I tried to approach carefully, using a secret technique, but it did not work. At first he stood still, and then, when I almost got my way, he suddenly jumped back and ran away. I was so upset :(

The other night, a cat was laying on our front porch while I was walking the dog. I took a bowl of water out for him but he took off before I got anywhere near him. He lives with a colony at a horse farm near us, so he's fine, probably, but I wanted to be certain.

Oh, i understand you very well, but I don't have any pets anymore, i was unlucky, they were constantly dying, i buried them every year, i even dreamed about them. Several years have passed since my last cat died, and since then i don't take cats anymore and i don't like dogs.

Appreciate the cat for being a cat. Cat is not there for you. Cat is.

Still can make you happy.

Somehow this doesn't fill the pain in my heart :(

Have you tried being deathly allergic to cats? I hear that makes them love you.

Because cats want to warm up to people on their own time. And people who don’t like cats (or are allergic) give them lots of space. So then the cat warms up to them.

The best piece of advice for getting a cat to like you is to ignore them until they approach you. If you approach before they’re ready, they’ll spook. But if you let them approach when they’re ready, they’ll love you.

Oh, how rude, as if you yourself don't like eating sugar?

[–] raynethackery@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

No no no. You have to ignore the cat. Then, it won't leave you alone.

[–] SugarCatDestroyer@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

No way, what do you mean? Isn't this only a problem for dogs?

[–] NABDad@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago (2 children)

It's serious. Looking at a cat is interpreted as threatening. To be non-threatening, you have to look away and even close your eyes. By ignoring the cat you show that you aren't a threat.

That's why cats always approach the person who doesn't like them. That's the only person looking away, so it's the only person who is signaling that they aren't a threat.

You can look at a cat and do the Slow Blink a few times to say "I'm not threatening you, nor threatened by you." Which is the closest cats get to "let's be friends."

Or "I'm selling a timeshare you might be interested in".

Can confirm. I am not a cat person. Cats will not leave me alone.

When you're around a cat, stare at it. It will leave you alone.

Just don't stare too hard, or you'll convince it you're such a threat that it must kill you.

I feel like there's a lot of room for error in this solution

I'm sorry, it sounds like you met my cat. She is not very brave, I'm afraid.

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

That's why you should always keep treats in your pocket!

You need to proceed immediately to a place which has a friendly pettable cat. Or cats.

It would be nice but there is not always time, Nya...
