Family of Cynthia Olivera reconsiders support for Trump after ICE detained her at green card interview

The family of a Canadian national who supported Donald Trump’s plans for mass deportations of immigrants say they are feeling betrayed after federal agents recently detained the woman in California while she interviewed for permanent US residency – and began working to expel her from the country.

“We feel totally blindsided,” Cynthia Olivera’s husband – US citizen and self-identified Trump voter Francisco Olivera – told the California news station KGTV. “I want my vote back.”

Cynthia Olivera, a 45-year-old mother of three US-born children, thus joined a growing list of examples contradicting the Trump administration’s claims that the immigration crackdown it has spearheaded since the president’s return to the Oval Office in January has prioritized targeting dangerous criminals.

Nah. You fuckers voted for mass deportation, you fucking own it.

You just thought it wouldn't happen to the people you care about. You didn't care if it happened to other people.

I have no sympathy for anyone who voted for this shit.

I hope she at least learns from this...but with what I've seen of conservatives, she's going to move here and start voting Conservative

As I've said many times, they don't care unless it affects them personally, then it is a crisis.

Turns out ladder pulling doesn't work well when you vote for the people that push you off with the ladder.

It was funny until she did the same thing to me.

I wonder if they'll learn empathy, or just outrage.

If they were capable of learning they wouldn't have voted for him in the first place

I don't wonder at all, unfortunately

We all know how the toddlers who vote for conservative cunts behave

Olivera

Let me guess: she looks Hispanic? That's your answer. What did you expect?

Yes..but also seems she was illegally in the country since 1999 which is even more fucking confusing why people that are illegally in the country voted for someone like trump..human stupidity never ceases to surprise me.

She lost her green card as a youth for stealing something under $200. She then kept going to immigration court and was told "you're fine" by the authorities for 25 years.

The US immigration system has been a tragedy for many decades. It doesn't work well, efficiently, not clearly. It's basically designed to allow in people who fit certain profiles, but any weirdness in your situation puts you in indefinite limbo and at the whims of various officials. It makes an underclass of grey zone residents. This was generally fine, but openly set up conditions for a racist regime to start snatching people out of their homes. People who played by the rules for decades.

The US immigration system today: When Kafka meets Hitler.

Explain to me like I am not American, how can an illegal immigrant vote? Don't you have to be a citizen?

[–] azimir@lemmy.ml 6 points 16 hours ago

Her husband voted for (R). There is no evidence that she voted.

Her husband is on record saying that despite his wife being taken away by ICE, he still supports the (R) agenda.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 5 points 18 hours ago

I assumed it was her husband and children voting.

[–] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 16 points 20 hours ago

"My situation is nuanced and complicated. Other people's situations are simple and straightforward."

They believed the caricature "bad people" were going to be the ones targeted. She wasn't a "bad person" she just stayed a little longer while trying to get her green card....

[–] diffusive@lemmy.world 5 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Not necessarily… it seems her husband surname (Francisco Olivera)
