This one.

It balances and opens beer bottles!

I wanna make one those floating tables that works on this weird science.

I could buy one, but I want to make one to better understand how it works because I just can't wrap my head around written or verbal explanations.

The outer chains are purely for stability of the top. The center one holds all weight.

t e n s e g r i t y

i like the little table orb things

[–] blackstampede@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Rubber band in the middle is trying to contract, pulling the top of the table up, and the chains keep it level?

[–] MBech@feddit.dk 10 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Not completely right. The middle can just be a piece of chain as well, but it needs to be under tension. Steve Mould explains it very well in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0onncd0_0-o

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Something like that; has something to do with tension but I could not explain it if my life depended on it lol

[–] rothaine@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's because the system's centre of gravity is under the table, and on the table's side of the fulcrum.

Ali Spagnola topped this by making a giant balancing bird

[–] Szyler@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Imagine that size made out of tungsten

[–] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 4 points 1 day ago

I had one of these that was Boba Fett. He had really big arms, and if I remember correctly, it came out of a kids meal from Taco Bell.

Just so that you know all these things are in terraria and you can attack things with them. Not the fidget spinner but the other things are in there.

[–] lime@feddit.nu 10 points 1 day ago (2 children)

terraria predates fidget spinners

[–] oce@jlai.lu 7 points 1 day ago

Damn, I didn't know Terraria needed to eat.

[–] SonOfAntenora@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

True, they keep adding stuff. They may add fidget spinners as well. Who knows, they keep pushing 'final' finalest updates if all times, til the next one. And that's really cool.

[–] lime@feddit.nu 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

it's really cool how much they've worked on it over the years. but it's not for me. i played it when wall of flesh was the final boss, and after beating that i felt like i was done with that gameplay loop.

[–] SonOfAntenora@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It can feel very work like. If you don't like strip minining in minecraft this is not fir you. I actually like building small bases and the limited set of ores works fine enough for me. Yeah in comparison terraria can be overwhelming. But when it's fun it's actually fun like few other things. It's also a very lighthearted game, minecraft will forever be melancholic. It's also addicting if you're the kinfd of person who likes consistend upgrades.

[–] lime@feddit.nu 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

personally i can never get into things that want me to grind for the sake of grinding. vanilla minecraft is a no-go, give me automation.

[–] SonOfAntenora@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think minecraft is what it is because of youtube and the creative mode. Survival is the only thing that makes building interesting, but for anything bigger than that you may need creative.

But i enjoy building castles and fortified bases, than you can basically go for adventures without ever strip mining. Villgaer maps, treasure maps and so on. I really don't care for the end that much. It's not one game it's a million different games.

[–] lime@feddit.nu 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

yeah. i don't enjoy any of the "creative" parts really, i want to make machines. terraria is a lot better at some of the things minecraft deos, but completely ignores others. which is good when you want a compelling game, rather than just a sandbox.

[–] SonOfAntenora@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

I enjoyed a fair bit of it. I found an intact shipwreck above ground right next to spawn in my recent world, so i thought i'd turn it into some piarete cove. I think i start to struggle when projects are too big. Bu now i do small things and i enjoy them all the same.

Supposedly, on any of the many occasions when archaeologists have found what is clearly an antique dildo, tradition advised labeling them something like "ceremonial relic."

Now that's a blast from the past. I can feel that picture.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's some kind of physics or something.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I mean......yes? Physics are involved for sure.

[–] howrar@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

Naw, that definitely defies the laws of physics.

[–] M137@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

My dad had one made from metal with a guy who had his legs stretched out instead of the bird wings and I think you can guess what was used as the balance point.

[–] john_lemmy@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

Nope. The wings are weighted so that the bird is perfectly balanced on its beak. You could set it on a pole and it would do the same thing, just didn't work on a table because the wings tail and belly would be what touched the table.
