I am legitimately surprised at how few people start with the horizontal line here. I can never get the damn thing lined up right if I don't start with the horizontal line.

You start with a straight line. It literally makes the most sense cause it decides the size of the star as well.

This is the correct order. 5-to-2 sets the width of the star, which is important when writing multiple identical stars next to each other.

I thought this was a bolt tightening pattern and wondered why anyone cared where they started.
Well I draw it as a pentagram instead whenever possible, but I think I still start at 4 if you flip it.
