If the choice is between depressing news I can do nothing about, and moth memes, please forgive me if I choose the moth memes.

[–] Doc_Crankenstein@slrpnk.net 2 points 8 hours ago

Thing is, we can do something about it — just not alone.

The rub is that it requires other people joining us and organizing to use our collective power to assert our political authority to take back ownership over the base resources which enable society to exist and devise a new system to replace the current, failed system.

Unfortunately that takes a lot of hard work and an inordinate amount of risk. People aren't ready yet to take that plunge; there are still too much bread and circuses keeping the majority of the working class distracted and pacified.

But hey, lamp right?

[–] jaggedrobotpubes@lemmy.world 2 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

It is, in fact, everybody's job to keep their poise, especially in the middle of hell, because otherwise they become incapable of becoming informed anyway, since they just go rage-blind.

[–] Doc_Crankenstein@slrpnk.net 1 points 8 hours ago

Rage can be a useful tool when that anger is channeled into a cause.

We shouldn't lose ourselves to anger, that is true, but we also shouldn't pacify ourselves out of fear of it.

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 9 points 1 day ago

Look. My therapist has a hard time keeping me from spiraling into a doom hole without being reminded about yet more horrible human bullshit every waking minute. Let me enjoy my stupid bullshit, motherfucker.

[–] knight_alva@lemmy.world 42 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Memes about the suffering of the innocent don’t actually help either. If your feeds were just a firehose of misery you are ultimately powerless to change, all that would do is hurt you.

I’m not saying we should be ignoring the wrongs of the world. All I’m saying is that there is a time and a place for moths.

[–] solsangraal@lemmy.zip 12 points 1 day ago

it is !lemmyshitpost@lemmy.world

if someone's expecting something (or anything) from it, then that's kind of on them as well

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

*mothsterious way.

[–] solsangraal@lemmy.zip 26 points 1 day ago (2 children)

it's a defense mechanism. it's so much easier to participate in pointless meaningless meme-of-the-moment exchanges than it is to face the un-fun reality that the world around you is burning

unfortunately pointing this out to them will only make them dig their heels in

[–] Grandwolf319@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They are not mutually exclusive, you can face it, then realize there isn’t much you can do (I’m not American) then you see some moths.

[–] solsangraal@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

there isn’t much you can do

what gave you that idea? perhaps the fact that no one's doing anything but posting moths?

enjoy your moths

[–] Grandwolf319@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 day ago (2 children)

what gave you that idea?

The current state of western democracy?

In my personal opinion, one of the most effective things you can do is collective bargaining. And on that note, imo not enough people have been convinced that somethings got to change. You have to have that consensus before real change.

[–] Doc_Crankenstein@slrpnk.net 1 points 8 hours ago

Western neoliberal democracy isn't the only option and, depending on perspective, was part of the problem by systemically enabling the rise of fascism.

[–] solsangraal@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

collective bargaining

yea. that ship has sailed.

not enough people have been convinced

https://lemmy.zip/comment/19854683 yea. i know

so...what, then? roll over and "ohwellnothingicando" and call it a day?

[–] Grandwolf319@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

so...what, then? roll over and "ohwellnothingicando" and call it a day?

I never said that, but imo you shouldn’t feel bad for lack of action or inability to change things. You should do what you can, but if you need to look at some moths enjoying some lamps, that’s totally fair.

Our struggles are like a marathon, not a 100 meter dash, you got to find joy when you can.

[–] solsangraal@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

you got to find joy when you can

i understand this sentiment, i really do. but people are being kidnapped, deported, MURDERED.

i'm glad that the moths make you feel better.

all it does for me is to reinforce the impulse that not only are we as a people just fucked, but also we as a people can't be bothered to deal with the fact that we're fucked

again, i'm not telling anyone what to do. except: enjoy your moths

[–] Doc_Crankenstein@slrpnk.net 2 points 8 hours ago

People really be arguing in favor of bread and circuses without understanding it is the very thing that is keeping them from engaging in political action for change.

[–] Track_Shovel@slrpnk.net 6 points 1 day ago

The burning will undoubtedly attract more moths

[–] Kaboom@reddthat.com 17 points 1 day ago (2 children)

There's been innocent people getting killed every day for the last ten thousand years. What would you scrolling through news stories on the Internet actually accomplish?

[–] Doc_Crankenstein@slrpnk.net 0 points 8 hours ago

Making people angry enough to get up and do something about it, angry enough to disregard the system and start breaking it. Angry enough to disobey.

Instead people are all too happy to remain obedient to the very system that oppresses them as long as they continue to be provided their bread and circuses.

[–] GladiusB@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] TheDoozer@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What is this supposed to mean? Is the implication that for the past ten thousand years, everyone should have lived in constant misery, thinking of nothing but the suffering of innocents, without a moment to spare for joy or silliness?

Or are you trying to twist their words to suggest that the suffering of innocents now isn't important because it's been happening for 10k years? Because that was clearly not the message being made. The closest I could imagine is they may be pointing out that some treat pointing out innocents suffering as a fad, where people all of a sudden care and can't believe that anyone else can do or care about anything else (and will burn out and stop caring once the fad is done, whether the issue has been resolved or not).

Either way, if you spend your whole time doomscrolling and never leave yourself a space for moth memes (or whatever), you will be no help to anyone and live in impotent misery.

Basically, moth memes are self care.

[–] GladiusB@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I am not saying the moth memes do not have their place. I am saying that having innocents dying for 10 thousand years does not mean it's acceptable to allow it just because of the length of time that it has been happening.

[–] Atomic@sh.itjust.works 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

I don't know what part of the world you live in. But in my corner, we investigate murder, find the responsible and prosecute them.

That's pretty much the opposite of allowing murder.

[–] Doc_Crankenstein@slrpnk.net 0 points 8 hours ago

While at the same time allowing people to be systemically murdered through lack of access to necessities because someone wasn't able to make a profit off of them.

Or are you trying to say those deaths are justified just because the state doesn't label it as "murder"?

[–] Sarmyth@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Wether it's acceptable or not is irrelevant to scrolling through social media or the existence of memes, moth or otherwise. Seeing some memes after years of people endlessly posting about the various conflicts, (because you are tripping hard of you think no one has been talking about the genocide on this website...) doesn't imply anyone thinks its "acceptable" to allow it (or is allowing it?).

[–] GladiusB@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

I'm saying the time waiting doesn't matter.

[–] Sarmyth@lemmy.world 0 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Who's allowing it because of the time waiting? Are they in the room with us? >.>

[–] GladiusB@lemmy.world 0 points 7 hours ago

I'm saying 10,000 year or two mins doesn't make the act any different. Which was in my original response.

[–] Kaboom@reddthat.com 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

My point was you reading news articles won't change anything. So why read them?

Are you going to do anything but wallow in depression? Just doomscrolling all day?

[–] GladiusB@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago

That is a fat projection

[–] zxqwas@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

I pay tax so that someone else can figure out who murdered who.

Please, I only have one life and I don't want to spend it thinking about miserable things.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Hey hey now. Let's not make these divisive statements here

[–] ExtremeDullard@lemmy.sdf.org 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm very Jesus-like

You mean you're cross?

I am after hearing this joke

Moths generally make you feel better than murder.

From an outside perspective. From an "oh, I just murdered a shitton of empanadas" perspective, still probably better. Fuck now I want like 100 empanadas

[–] jubilationtcornpone@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Ok, @SnokenKeekaGuard@lemmy.dbzer0.com. Chief propagator of moth memes. 😏

But seriously, it's a naive person who doesn't understand that every single day, somewhere in the world, the most horrible shit you can imagine is going down at any given moment. That's just a fact. Our job is to help when we can and deal with it when we can't. One of the way we have or dealing with it when we can't is through humor and there's not a damned thing wrong with that.

[–] SnokenKeekaGuard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Me??? I would never post a moth meme! How dare you

[–] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Weaponized Memery is the wave of the future, the Pokemon just hasn't full evolved yet!

Beans -> Jeans -> Moth -> [???]

I don't know how many forms it has... Has anyone tried using an evolution stone? Walked 10,000 steps with a Moth companion? Evolved Jeans with an empty pokeball in the party?

[–] Bebopalouie@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I have not seen any moth posts for a while. I thought they’d been removed or something.

[–] BeBopaLula@piefed.ca 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Hmmm I switched to Piefed and lo and behold there be moths.

Edit I bounce between the 2 now I have voyager.

[–] Jessica@discuss.tchncs.de 0 points 1 day ago

Go to !crazyfuckingvideos@lemmy.world and see the aftermath of all the bombing happening. (NSFL)

[–] ryedaft@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 day ago

If you only saw moth memes and not how many starving people were murdered today while trying to get aid, that's on you.
