Big brain tech dude got yet another clueless take over at HackerNews etc? Here's the place to vent. Orange site, VC foolishness, all welcome.

I thought by now everybody assumed that their tech was spying on them and stealing their data.

That's kind of different from it being fully public though. I imagine people are thinking only Facebook is going to be looking at this stuff, not their coworkers and relatives.

I assume that the corpos are taking my data, but I also trust that their primary interest is commercial. Or rather, commercials. I.e. selling shit or otherwise profiting. But I've seen the kind of asshole who ends up in the general public and some of those fuckers are actively evil. I don't expect Meta to target my family for our politics or go after anyone's gender identity unless some outside circumstance makes it profitable for them.

Still wondering what really happened here. A dark pattern in the app? Or some kind of technical glitch? It it was a dark pattern, has it been changed since then? Has anybody posted screenshots or a video of the steps users need to take to make their chats public? I'm most definitely not going to install the app myself just to try it out.

Jfc.

Here’s how to switch (Meta AI) off:

  • Tap your profile icon at the top right.

  • Tap “Data & Privacy” under “App settings.”

  • Tap “Manage your information.”

  • Then, tap “Make all your prompts visible to only you.”

  • If you’ve already posted publicly and want to remove those posts, you can also tap “Delete all prompts.”

Here's a faster easier option!

  1. Press and hold the icon until it shakes
  2. Click uninstall

While I like this option more, at this point I wouldn't trust it to not spy on me still. I guess that also goes for the settings route. Shit.

How is it going to spy on you if you don't have it on your device and do not use it?

I guess their trackers would still be around on the internet, though its fixable. If you're not using an adblock and a noscript addon the web is damn near unusable, so I highly recommend at least these two, preferably with all filter lists enabled

I think mostly by websites colluding to track your browser's fingerprint so facebook/meta can maintain your behavioral profile and sell it back to them.

Yeah, I know trackers are a thing but that's not the same as what this article is talking about.

The data must flow.

Oh I thought that Meta reveals your chat history to another person. Good thing I don't use Meta AI.
