YSK - for all the things that can make your life easier!

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must begin with YSK.

All posts must begin with YSK. If you're a Mastodon user, then include YSK after @youshouldknow. This is a community to share tips and tricks that will help you improve your life.

Rule 2- Your post body text must include the reason "Why" YSK:

**In your post's text body, you must include the reason "Why" YSK: It’s helpful for readability, and informs readers about the importance of the content. **

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Posts and comments which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding non-YSK posts.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-YSK posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

Rule 7- You can't harass or disturb other members.

If you harass or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

If you are a member, sympathizer or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

For further explanation, clarification and feedback about this rule, you may follow this link.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- The majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here.

Unless included in our Whitelist for Bots, your bot will not be allowed to participate in this community. To have your bot whitelisted, please contact the moderators for a short review.

Rule 11- Posts must actually be true: Disiniformation, trolling, and being misleading will not be tolerated. Repeated or egregious attempts will earn you a ban. This also applies to filing reports: If you continually file false reports YOU WILL BE BANNED! We can see who reports what, and shenanigans will not be tolerated.

If you file a report, include what specific rule is being violated and how.

It's freeing in a way, I don't have to do any extra processing in my head, and can just see the posts and comments for what they are. You should try it too!

Voting is decentralized moderation. It's harder to navigate content in servers that disable downvotes. I get what you're aiming for here, but the downside is not worth it for me.

[–] gay_sex@mander.xyz 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I agree, I won't argue against their usefulness. I just meant disabling them for myself personally. I used to tend to judge posts and comments from their upvote/downvote scores rather than their actual content, now I can see them for what they are, in my eyes. I found that pretty cool and refreshing.

I understood that, your message was clear. I don't want to be blind to votes for my own sanity though (filtering out potentially damaging interactions). Different strokes for different folks.

People will upvote and downvote for any reason, but often do so simply because they agree or disagree with the post. A good moderator does not moderate based on their personal opinions. I would rather not rely on votes for moderation because it's terrible for that purpose.

Without downvotes how will I be able to tell who won an argument??!

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 4 points 1 day ago

Easy: Everyone's a loser in an online argument. 😉

I like it because I'm less likely to vote just because others have upvoted it. I'm more honest with what I actually like and dislike

[–] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago

I dunno, it isn't universally beneficial.

Votes, particularly down, can have a cooling effect on assholery.

Voting is faster, and people are lazy. So there's a tendency for people to just vote and scroll on. Remove down votes, and you get more snark if mods don't intervene.

It's kinda hit or miss though

Does this apply to both posts and comments?

I could see possibly trying it for posts but I’m pretty sure I’d still want comment scores.

[–] Zwiebel@feddit.org 1 points 2 days ago

In the Eternity app you can disable that separately

[–] rumimevlevi@lemmings.world 1 points 2 days ago

Yes but on posts you still see the upvote percentage so if the percentage is very low, you know that the votea is negative

I did this for downvotes. Because like idk i find they are quite petty sometimes. And the satisfaction of having a bigoted take have 50 downvotes is emulated in the fact u see a bigoted take wirh 2 upvotes followed by a reply with 64 upvotes.

[–] LainTrain@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 days ago

I only have upvotes and downvotes on Jerboa, no scores.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I don't get how anyone cares to pay attention to them or consistently upvotes or downvotes. I have to be significantly moved to do either.

[–] RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world -1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

You would be very surprised at the lengths some people will go to in order to weaponize the way someone else votes on a comment or post online. People really couldn't be any less petty.

[–] scintilla@lemmy.blahaj.zone -1 points 1 day ago

I'm a huge fan of the lack of downvotes on blahaj because it seems to make me focus on the negative less when I can't interact with it without commenting and taking a ton of time to do so.

But upvotes are still useful because I get some amount of filtering of the absolutely crazy stuff most of the time.

[–] Pika@sh.itjust.works -1 points 2 days ago

it's the only way to run the platform in my mind. It removes a lot of the hive mind aspect of it letting you just enjoy the platform how you want and give /your/ opinion of things instead of others opinions of things. I've had my scores disabled since a month or two after I started and it's been so much more enjoyable.

thanks! very helpful in decluttering and prolly peace of mind for those that chase after internet brownie points.
