Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.
  • 5. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ Language/язык/Sprache
  • This is primarily an English-speaking community. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§πŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
  • Comments written in other languages are allowed.
  • The substance of a post should be comprehensible for people who only speak English.
  • Titles and post bodies written in other languages will be allowed, but only as long as the above rule is observed.
  • 6. (NEW!) Regarding public figuresWe all have our opinions, and certain public figures can be divisive. Keep in mind that this is a community for memes and light-hearted fun, not for airing grievances or leveling accusations.
  • Keep discussions polite and free of disparagement.
  • We are never in possession of all of the facts. Defamatory comments will not be tolerated.
  • Discussions that get too heated will be locked and offending comments removed.

Please report posts and comments that break these rules!

Important: never execute code or follow advice that you don't understand or can't verify, especially here. The word of the day is credibility. This is a meme community -- even the most helpful comments might just be shitposts that can damage your system. Be aware, be smart, don't remove France.

Ever since I bought my steam deck, I've had an uncomfortable urge to end every sentence with "by the way", I feel like I'm missing pare of my sentence, It hurts my soul... like I'm missing my Arch on my feet. I can't explain it, I know it's not my shoes, my insoles are custom I use Arch By the way.

How likely are you to recommend Arch to a friend or colleague? 1, not likely, to 5, extremely likely.

    [–] match@pawb.social 86 points 1 week ago (1 children)

For Arch users, this question reduces to "how likely are you to have a friend or colleague"

    [–] dufkm@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

Shame they didn't mention grandmothers, they can be the most patient listening to ramblings about Arch.

Honestly? It actually depends on the friend or colleague.

Arch isn't as bad as it can seem, especially if you find an installer for it. Something that's more mainstream linux might be better; though. especially if they're looking for a "it works" kind of thing.

I'd actually recommend Windows to people I know would keep asking me support questions, so I can say sorry, I use Linux, you'll have to ask someone else.

That's great and all but why bring up your favorite chewing gum flavor?

    [–] Sidhean@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

No ACTUALLY I use LINUX Mint, my favorite LINUX flavor (which I use, by the way) 3:

This is interesting because I’ve been having conversations about what operating system I recommend for the last 20+ years.

    Definitely! Zero proprietary software.

    Mmm, Triscuit!

    Trisquel

    Eww Ubuntu.

    [–] Honytawk 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Should have stated "no normal people"

Nerds don't fall in that category when talking about OSes.

Is your purpose here only to be contrarian about a topic that, judging by your comments on SteamOS, you know nothing about and understand even less? Just say so and we can collectively ignore you.

Pretty sure I saw this meme half a year ago.

Edit: My bad, I suppose this is the original and the other one is an edit.

    Believes in free software...

    But uses Twitter...

    [–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

    @96VXb9ktTjFnRi@feddit.nl Believes in free software….

Still uses a closed-source modem baseband to connect to the internet.

Also probrally still uses an absolutely proprietary CPU with an absolutely proprietary BIOS/Firmware

Respect that you used your password generator for your username though.

It's like an existential crisis, like a threat to our very well-being. Like, of course I'm gonna mention Linux.
