Karl Marx, born on this day in 1818, was a foundational political theorist and journalist associated with the philosophy of Marxism.

Among Marx's best-known texts are the "The Communist Manifesto" and the three-volume "Das Kapital", in which he set out to define and explain the behavior of the capitalist mode of production.

Marx's political and philosophical thought have had enormous influence on subsequent intellectual, economic and political history, and his name has been used as an adjective, a noun, and a school of social theory.

Marx's critical theories about society, economics and politics - collectively understood as Marxism - hold that human societies develop through class conflict. In capitalism, this manifests itself in the conflict between the ruling classes (known as the bourgeoisie) that control the means of production, and the working classes (known as the proletariat) that enable these means by selling their labor power in return for wages.

Employing a critical approach known as historical materialism, Marx concluded that, like previous socio-economic systems, capitalism produced internal tensions which would lead to its self-destruction and replacement by a new system known as socialism.

Lenin question: I'm reading a biography and pre-Great War, it appears that Lenin approved of elections and there were Bolshevik delegates in the State Dumas. Did he change his mind about electoralism after the war or something? I'm sure I can figure it out if I keep reading but I'm impatient and this has been bugging me for a while

In the movie the Martian the titular Martian could have gotten off of mars had he simply hooked up all the potatoes he was growing into a battery to power his rocket ship instead of eating them. Many would call this a plot hole but instead it's a character moment to show how stupid he is very-smart

Alexa Bliss is apparently the celebrity used the most for catfishing profiles. Must be unnerving seeing your face being used on every social media platform to mess with people.

It's gonna sound extremely privileged but I'll say it my checks can 6 lbs can of unsweeten applesauce is too big. If I open it I'll have to commit to making something within the same couple of days or it will go bad and I only brought this on myself. I got it since by volume it was cheaper than the smaller ones and a great egg substitute until I found ground flax seeds where are way better just because of shelf life and storage btw. I'll use it up this weekend making cookies and pancakes maybe a cake too idk it's gonna be delicious

weekly Dr Who rant, spoilers within

"I used to call it the world wide web, until humans named something far uglier that."

The Doctor just wants to chill out and gossip with his mates. Unfortunately the barber shop they hang out in has been stolen be Anansi who's using stories to power some sorta giant, cyborg spider ship. Cue a coup attempt among the gods and a reunion with a jilted lover.

What I liked:

  • the way they tied the way the map of the escape route through the maze was hidden into an interesting piece of African history was cool.

  • the design of the engine/control room was rad.

  • Dr Who acknowledging Earth outsida the Anglosphere is rare, I want to see more of it.

What I didn't like:

  • GIANT CGI SPIDER, it looked terrible.

  • Anansi, it's all very well to use gods like Bastet or Loki who aren't worshipped in earnest anymore but Anansi is a figure in a religion actively being practiced and that feels weird to me.

Overall:

I liked it. With more hits than misses so far imho Dr Who is slowly building a winning streak. Tune in next week when they throw that in the shitter with a Eurovision Song Contest parody.

I am so unlucky, but I am not disadvantaged by nature of my birth (outside of disability) so it sounds like I'm being an asshole when I talk about it. I'm not complaining about my life, I'm complaining about somehow always getting below the expected value in games of chance. I'm not trying to tell I sob story, I'm explaining a statistical anomaly! I react strongly to offers to go to the casino not out of a gambling habit, I would have to win a damn game to get addicted in the first place!

I keep accidentally becoming the summer intern lead, but totally fine with that. It’s fun supervising low pressure projects. Also,I seem to be the only one on the team with realistic expectations of what summer students can do, so I feel it protects them a little bit for me to volunteer for it.

Edit: there is now Japanese music, sanity has been restored

If we all get together we can co-ordinate tru anyone tipping tips well eboguh to make Brade and Liz legit believe something silly. I'm thinking anacondas. Just everyone start dealing in with sightings of large constrictor snakes or the disappearance of small animals and large snake like trails in your neighborhood. If we make it seem real and they do a full episode on the large snakes it means we can do anything. We can develop nukes
