Sorry in advance but, this might be a bet vent-y

Marvel Rivals fans always try to justify the character designs for the female characters (which I'll admit, can be a bit goonarbait) by bringing up either Daw or Amari from Concord and literally ONLY THOSE 2 and going like "you see what happens when you don't have attractive characters" but they often forget that

  1. LITERALLY NOBODY ASIDE FROM SONY EXECS WANTED CONCORD

  2. Mei from Overwatch is also kinda bulky and a lot of people love her

  3. just because your game has attractive characters doesn't mean it'll do well or be good. look at First Descendant. it's lost nearly all it's playerbase going from a 270,,000 peak to a 9,000 player 24 hour peak. having attractive characters didn't help that game

4 . When bringing up concord. It's not the the characters were unattractive. It's that they looked bad. Those are in fact two separate things. I don't think anyone is going to tell me the cast of Team Fortress 2 are hot. But they look great as characters. Each is fun to look at, expressive, oozes personality, and is easily identifiable. Concord's designs just looked like a shitty Guardians of the Galaxy knockoff . Porting the body and face of an OF model into the game wouldn't have changed that.

Look, you're right and you're making a really valid point but,

I don't think anyone is going to tell me the cast of Team Fortress 2 are hot

you are wrong about this and you do need to apologise.

i think you missed the point of the post. people don't play games just because the characters are hot. people also don't write fanfics just because the characters are hot. (though i'm sure at least one person out there thinks the TF2 Soldier is sexy. the world is a big place.)

Even if they were right and that games need to sexualize women to sell copies, that's really an indictment of gaming and gamers.

What they're really saying is "I need to be able to jack it to the characters on screen to have fun."

You're grossly underestimating the internet there, but also maybe it would be worth leaning into the gooner angle and start describing all popular videogame characters as sexy. Sure you can say attractive characters make popular games, but you also have to admit you whack it to pacman.

Yeah, Concord's failure wasn't character design, it was shitty marketing and charging $40 for a game in a genre overflowing with free-to-plays.

IMO If the marketing is bending over backwards to show off the models they use for their women then the game is going to be slop regardless of how the woman looks.

  • if the women are hypersexualized, you'll get some gooner purchases but they won't play the slop for long. This has been a tried and true business practice that predates videogames.
  • If the women are normal looking but still being spotlighted then the company is trying to market to women as well but has no idea what women actually want in their games.

I don't think I've ever had a serious discussion about how a game didn't do well because of how sexually appealing the characters in it are? Not like you're describing. What sort of weird sludge people are you hanging out with?
