I believe the reason that the Chinese embassy would post this video is that they are engaging in hypocrisy baiting. They're smugposting "You said you hated tariffs but now you like them? curious".

Reagan was opposed to tariffs because he wanted to outsource American labor to destroy America's labor unions

The reason why Trump supports tariffs is not quite clear. He has said in the past that he wants to get rid of all taxes and fund the US government entirely on tariffs. He proposed the idea of an "External Revenue Service", similar to the IRS, but instead the US taxes every person outside of the US. The reasoning for this is that working class people would be obligated to pay more than capitalists.

Trump also seems to believe that value comes from money, rather than from labor. With Trump's tariffs on every country, he placed larger tariffs on countries which export more commodities to the US than vice versa. Trump says that "other countries are ripping us off" because we give them more money and they give us more commodities. It would be pretty logical to conclude that the US is getting a pretty good deal because it is receiving more real material while the trade partner is receiving more pieces of paper. Trump says the opposite.

Trump wants other countries to be forced to buy America's slop. He wants other countries to buy US cars even though US cars don't meet safety standards in other countries and are too big for their roads. Trump wants other countries to buy American food even if they don't consider it safe to consume.

Tangentially, China does not always have perfect opinions and I still support China. Xi Jinping met with Henry Kissinger and told him it was a "great honor" to meet. When Henry Kissinger died, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Henry Kissinger was "a longstanding and good friend of the Chinese people". Critical support means that you can support China while disagreeing with some things that they say or do. Tweeting "It's so over" at the Chinese Embassy because they posted a Reagan video, is embarrassing and narcissistic.

Holy shit I didn’t understand the External Revenue Service stuff until I read this. If this is genuinely how Trump thinks the economy works, we are more screwed than I thought.

I like to think they liked Kissinger for being the most mask-off ghoul of all. He's sort of a dependable enemy

Rare China L, but not unique

Xie Feng, China’s ambassador to the U.S, posted on X that Kissinger’s death was “a tremendous loss for both our countries and the world” and that “he will always remain alive in the hearts of the Chinese people as a most valued old friend.”
