Found a few on lemmyverse, apologies if they aren't what you're looking for or you already knew about them. This isn't really my scene.
There may be more if you can come up with other terms to search for.
A place to post new communities all over Lemmy for discovery and promotion.
The rules for behavior are a straight carry over of Mastodon.World's rules. You can click the link but we've reposted them here in brief, as a guideline. We will continue to use the Mastodon.World rules as the master list. Over all, be nice to each other and remember this isn't a community built around debate. For the rules about formatting your posts, scroll down to number 2.
1. Follow the rules of Mastodon.world, which can be found here.
A. Provide an inclusive and supportive environment. This means if it isn't rulebreaking and we can't be supportive to them then we probably shouldn't engage.
B. No illegal content.
C. Use content warnings where appropriate. This means mark your submissions NSFW if need be.
D. No uncivil behavior. This includes, but is not limited to: Name Calling; Bullying; Trolling; Disruptive Commenting; or Personal Criticisms.
E. No Harrassment. As an example in relation to Transgender people this includes, deadnaming, misgendering, and promotion of conversion therapy. Similarly Misogyny, Misandry, and Racism are also banned here.
2. Include a community or instance title and description in your post title. - A following example of this would be New Communities - A place to post new communities or instances all over Lemmy for discovery and promotion.
3. Follow the formatting. - The formatting as included below is important for people getting universal links across Lemmy as easily as possible.
Please include this following format in your post:
[link text](/c/community@instance.com)
This provides a link that should work across instances, but in some cases it won't
You should also include either:
or instance.com/c/community
Q: Why do I get a 404?
A: At least one user in an instance needs to search for a community before it gets fetched. Searching for the community will bring it into the instance and it will fetch a few of the most recent posts without comments. If a user is subscribed to a community, then all of the future posts and interactions are now in-sync.
Q: When I try to create a post, the circle just spins forever. Why is that?
A: This is a current known issue with large communities. Sometimes it does get posted, but just continues spinning, but sometimes it doesn't get posted and continues spinning. If it doesn't actually get posted, the best thing to do is try later. However, only some people seem to be having this problem at the moment.

Thanks so much! They're kinda quiet... maybe there just aren't enough alt people here yet
Try talking in them anyway, maybe something general that you can crosspost to all of them at first. I had luck with talking into eternally silent Elite: Dangerous communities.
The beauty of a place without algorithmic feed is that things can surface way more easily.
Also, I wanted to use the Public API calculate a recent activity/users ratio to identify the silent communities that would be more worth interacting with.
Anything that isn't in the current mainstream tends to be in short supply on Lemmy. People haven't gotten used to the idea that other people aren't already running those communities for them. I think they're still working up the bravery to be more active/figuring out the platform and if it's worth the effort.
As others suggested you could start some communities up yourself. Maybe another option is digging up some of the dead communities and making a post asking others if they're interested in taking them over? That's worked for a couple communities in the past.
Thanks I already run !WomensStuff@lazysoci.al so I can't take another one on.
That's why I suggested asking others to adopt some of the slower communities that are already out there. 😉
There's bound to be others who are interested, you've already gotten a few bites with this post.
You've inspired me I'm trying to assist with !gpral@hilariouschaos.com
Awesome mate. Glad you found something you feel comfortable helping with!
😃
Ahhhh I misread that... thanks mate!
I'm defo alt. :)
Your username is GENIUS
Haha, thank you. ^^
I've noticed it goes in phases:
!gothindustrial@lemmy.world is currently in phase 3 but it was in phases 1 and 2 for a while. !cyberpunk@lemmy.zip is bouncing between phases 1 and 2. !thrashmetal@lemmy.world is in phase 3. Punk is interesting bc it has both !punk_rock@lemmy.ca and !punk@lemmy.world. Ideally they'd join forces on !punk_rock@lemmy.ca and then they'd be in phase 2 or 3. !metal@lemmy.world is pretty much at phase 4, tho it's sometimes lacking in discussions.
Anyway, I recommend picking one of those communities and posting/discussing, you don't have to be a mod to help grow them.
Yep, the mod has to do a lot of work at the start which is hard.
Well, I was saying you don't have to be a mod. If we look at examples beyond "alt" communities, !superbowl@lemmy.world 's main poster isn't a mod. Likewise, !bmoviebonanza@lemmy.world 's most frequent poster isn't a mod either.
It doesn't have to be hard work. Just pick a couple communities and start engaging at the level you're comfortable with.
I don't want to have to deal with the mod stuff, exactly like OP said. I'm just here to promote owls, conservation, and wildlife rehab. I do have a great mod that lets me do pretty much anything I want and will do stickies and banner changes and such for me, and I just keep giving good content.
Definitely looking for the same.
I've seen some metal communities (mostly death- and black metal), but generally it's mostly just people posting links to songs, so not much discussion going on.
!gothindustrial@lemmy.world just relaunched recently, previously it was only music-focused but now we welcome any related discussion. though we're still mostly just posting music links, lel.
Interesting, I kind of expected Lemmy to be the metal demographic
Ah heck... I already manage a community I'd start one if I didn't.
!tattoos@hilariouschaos.com
Nice
Thanks Alice. Are you in charge of the second one?
Welcome. Yes,
Excellent I know you'll be a great mod. Now lemmy is picking up, would you have time to make it a bit more active with me? Would be nice to have an alt community which wasn't centred on music links.
Yea for sure. Will be nice having some activity on it
Awesome! We can give it a go and see what happens
If you are interested, I could make you a mod if you want. Would be nice to hand over some communities. I've got a lot. So just let me know, and be sure to leave a comment on a post in that community so I can mod you.
Thanks I don't think I could manage 2 communities though! Well done for doing so many
Okay, no worries! If you ever change your mind, let me know and it's yours!
Thanks Alice!
Unfortunatly no, but I'll keep an eye out for you!
All the ones I've found are dead or quiet.
Be the change you want to see.
