Frogs (1972) is the movie for this Sunday's "monsterdon" watch party over on Mastodon, our fediverse sibling!

  • Just start watching that movie this Sunday, Feb 23, 2025 at 9pm ET / 8pm CT / 6pm PT, which is 2am Monday UTC
  • and follow #monsterdon over on mastodon for live commentary. For example, you can follow that hashtag here: https://mastodon.social/tags/monsterdon
  • I usually open two web browser windows on a computer side-by-side. But you could follow the mastodon commentary on a phone app while watching the movie on TV or something...

How to watch the movie:

Frogs ... falls into the "eco-horror" category, telling the story of a wildlife photographer who meets an upper-class U.S. Southern family who are victimized by several different animal species, including snakes, birds, leeches, lizards, and butterflies.

...

A reviewer from HorrorNews.net found it odd for a horror film to be titled Frogs when all the killings in the film are done by animals other than frogs and discussed the acting: "Sam Elliott is good as always. He manages to feel like the outsider while also feeling like part of the group. It makes his role work in ways that it might not work in someone else's control. Ray Milland is also fairly good as the patriarch of the Crockett family. He personifies that bullheaded 'you listen to me because I'm always right' attitude in such a believable manner that you think he is that guy. The rest of the cast isn't as great as these two, but their lack of good performance only helps to make their deaths more fun to watch. They overact or underact in the perfect ways to make the movie priceless."[7]

EDIT: FULL ENGLISH DUB ON YOUTUBE!

Whatever you do, find the English Dub.

Do not get the subtitled version. I know this is the opposite of what you usually want for a foreign film, but trust me on this one.

The English Dub for this film is absolutely unhinged and great.

I've been trying to find a list of the English voice actors for a very long time because I swear I recognize several voices from my Saturday morning cartoons in the 90's. (Most notably one of the young Shaolin boys that Hung Man Ting befriends)

IMDB Entry

Starring:

  • Jet Li as Hung Hei Kwun
  • Miao Xie as Hung Man Ting
  • Chingmy Yau as Red Bean
  • Deannie Ip as Red Bean's Mother
  • Sung-Young Chen as Ma Kai-Sin
  • Chunhua Ji as Ma Ling-Yee
  • Damian Lau as Chan Kan-Nam
  • Lung-Wei Wang as Commander
  • Chu-Ko Liang as the Wax Sculptor

Ten years before Kung Fu Hustle, Jet Li starred in this comedic action film which sports a lot of elements of what you might call a "Live Action Anime."

As shown in the animated GIF above, the film starts off on full-blast with a Shaolin plus a baby fight. (and of course catbox.moe is down so the GIF isn't loading now, d'oh!)

This would be the first of two films Jet Li would star alongside Miao Xie as a father/son fighting duo, followed by My Father is a Hero / The Enforcer (1995). The Enforcer is a much more serious film than New Legend of Shaolin, and in my opinion New Legend of Shaolin is just a way more fun film.

The entire film really feels cartoony and over-the-top. Every step of the way it gets weirder until it results in an absolutely insane climax and ending.

It's got Christopher "Saruman / Count Dooku" Lee! It's got Peter "that guy who blew up Princess Leia's planet" Cushing! Yes, The Gorgon (1964) is the subject of this Sunday's "monsterdon" watch party over on Mastodon, our fediverse sibling!

  • Just start watching that movie this Sunday, Feb 16, 2025 at 9pm ET / 8pm CT / 6pm PT, which is 2am Monday UTC

Germany 1910: The village of Vandorf has suffered seven horrific murders in five years. In each case, the unfortunate victim has been turned to stone.

...

Variety wrote: "Though written and directed on a leisurely note, The Gorgon is a well-made, direct yarn that mainly gets its thrills through atmosphere. The period storyline is simple and predictable, but John Gilling has turned out a well-rounded piece and Terence Fisher's direction is restrained enough to avoid any unintentional yocks."[7]

The Monthly Film Bulletin wrote: "The Gorgon myth does not fit happily into Transylvanian surroundings, and there are too many red-herrings indicative of the script's straining after horrific effect (the mad woman, the brain transplantation, etc.). The trouble is that one is never really in doubt as to who the Gorgon is. Also, as in Hammer's stablemate, The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb, the monster's appearance is belated, vague and insufficiently spectacular. Still, it makes a change from vampires, and though the film has little genuine flair for atmosphere it is quite well acted by Richard Pasco and an appropriately blank-eyed, statuesque Barbara Shelley."[8]

How to watch the movie:

Two Abbott and Costello-type soldiers find plantlike creatures that are under the control of two beautiful alien scientists who are bent on conquering Earth.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0128274/

Invasion of the Star Creatures has never been well reviewed by critics. When it first opened, the film trade magazine Box Office opined: “What a lot of baloney! Such a waste of time, film and effort. The title was good, but was it a spooky film? Nope! A comedy!! Closed the first night”.[7] Film historian Bill Warren, in his 1996 book Keep Watching the Skies!, Vol. 2, called the film "astonishingly bad ... so helplessly bad that it's almost unwatchable".[1]

In 1979, the film was cited by Harry and Michael Medved in their book The Golden Turkey Awards, a tribute to bad films. Invasion of the Star Creatures was nominated in the category for “The Worst Vegetable Movie of All Time”...

Content WARNING: the Tubi version has a warning that "The content that you are about to view features depictions that are objectionable..." Nobody on Mastodon knows what that refers to, probably crass sexism? (edit: from perusing the imdb reviews, it likely refers to a scene with a stereotypical depiction of Native Americans...)

Piranha is the subject of this Sunday's "monsterdon" watch party over on Mastodon, our fediverse sibling!

How to watch:

  • someone usually streams it on https://miru.miyaku.media/ at that time so check there
  • if you're in North America, Australia, or the UK try Tubi: https://tubitv.com/movies/452488/piranha last I checked adblock worked with it
  • YOUTUBE WARNING: there's a movie on youtube that says it's Piranha but it's actually some other movie, I think it's "Piranha, Piranha" from 1972 even though it says it's from 1978. Note that Piranha was also re-made in 1995 so make sure you get the 1978 version which is 95 minutes long.
  • if you want to pay or watch ads and are in the US, look here: https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/piranha

Executive produced by Roger Corman, Piranha is the first installment in a series of low-budget B movies inspired by the film Jaws (1975), which had been a major success for Universal Pictures and director Steven Spielberg. Initially, Universal had considered obtaining an injunction to prevent Piranha being released, particularly as they had released Jaws 2 the same summer, but the lawsuit was dropped after Spielberg himself gave the film a positive comment in advance.

...

Charles Champlin, in his review of the film for the Los Angeles Times, called it "a swift, efficient program picture which squeezes the most out of its dollars to squeeze delicious chills from the audience."[14] Jill Forbes of The Monthly Film Bulletin called the film "a quickie from the Corman company that can't decide whether to plump for horror, science fiction or social comedy, and plays safe with something for everyone", and found it "a lot of fun".[15] Screen International's Marjorie Bilbow wrote that the film "works as spirited scream and giggle nonsense because there is always something happening and Joe Dante directs with a slyly tongue-in-cheek awareness of the existence of big brother Jaws".[16]

Piranha has since acquired a cult status. On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 72% based on 29 reviews, with an average rating of 6.5 out of 10. The site's critics consensus reads, "Performed with a wink and directed with wry self-awareness, Piranha is an unabashed B-movie with satirical bite."[17]

Steven Spielberg called the film "the best of the Jaws ripoffs".[6]
