A new law in Russia, set to take effect this week, bans individuals labeled as "foreign agents" from engaging in educational activities in the Russian language. Violators face fines and prison. According to Estonian expert Aimar Ventsel on Vikerraadio, this effectively declares language to be the property of the Russian state.

Now, the new law takes this further — criminalizing educational activities in Russian entirely for foreign agents. This covers writing, public speaking, lectures, and even social media posts. Violators face fines and prison. Organizations that let foreign agents participate also face punishment.

So, even something as basic as taking Russian classes in Russia, in order to learn the language, would be a crime if you're a foreigner.

Additionally, „foreign agents” can no longer earn money from book sales or sell their real estate property in Russia without navigating near-impossible financial restrictions. This hits exiled academics and cultural figures particularly hard, preventing them from funding their lives abroad.

Moreover, Russian-registered legal entities will be forbidden from enabling foreign agents to engage in Russian-language activities, and more critically, from allowing them to earn money through such work.

They're really looking to expel every non-Russian from the country, huh?

Is that not spycraft 101 since… forever?

[–] subignition@fedia.io 3 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Spycraft?

You didn't read beyond the headline, did you?

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

I did.

I took “foreign agents” to mean Russians traveling abroad. It didn’t occur to me people are still idiotic enough to vacation in Russia.

Good luck to them trying to prevent the use of their language by non-Russians anywhere in the world.

[–] SirSamuel@lemmy.world 4 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

They'll use this as a pretext to arrest Russians in Russia if they belong to groups Russia considers "foreign actors". They already use extremist laws to arrest and control various religious minorities. This will be another weapon in their toolbox of oppression of their own citizens

Thanks, that's even worse than I thought
