Spotify is based in Sweden. Though, they're ripping off artists, too.

[โ€“] stardust@lemmy.ca 40 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Also donated money to trumps inauguration.

[โ€“] noodlejetski@lemm.ee 34 points 1 month ago

and are paying Joe Rogan millions.

[โ€“] paf@jlai.lu 7 points 1 month ago (4 children)

Are they some that don't rip off artists?

[โ€“] Renohren@lemmy.today 7 points 1 month ago

Quobuz has been decent to artists so far (that's why they have many indie labels signed up)

[โ€“] hendrik@palaver.p3x.de 2 points 1 month ago

Good question. I don't have an answer to that. Maybe someone else has, but I guess there aren't that many out there with a music catalogue like this. There are several smaller services which show up on Google. But I don't have any experience with them. And there is Apple, Tidal... But I don't know what they pay forward to artists.

Iirc Napster pays artists the most per play.

I liked it a lot, more than Tidal (what I have now). But the last few months with Qobuz I had streaming issues, because of something on their end. It was a freak issue though. The catalgue was absolutely wonderful especially if youโ€™re into jazz like me. It allowed you to browse record labels too, which I sorely miss.

I switched because of the streaming issues and because tidal has a connect option, which allows me to send music without compression over wifi to my stereo, natively from tidal (spotify has it too, but lower quality sound)

Unfortunately it doesnโ€™t have much music from my country. Itโ€™s a shame, because I donโ€™t listen much of English music.

But they do have a request form, which is nice!

Oobuz is the French alternative.

Great for electronic music, it's from Germany

[โ€“] NotJohnSmith@feddit.uk 1 points 1 month ago

This one gets my vote as I'm allergic to subscriptions and it allows music streaming without one where Qobus seems to only play 30 secs of a song unless you pay

Qobuz ๐Ÿ‘

Donated 150,000 dollars to Trumps' inauguration

[โ€“] Taiatari@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

Oof didn't know that.

looks interesting from a quick search - can you say any more about it? How does it work, what kind of music is on there, how legal is it?

[โ€“] dynamoMaus@feddit.org 1 points 1 month ago

Not really. Have not tried it myself.

...in origin, now owned by US/Russian corp.

[โ€“] doodledup@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Source? Their team is still developing in France.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deezer

Look for "access industries". They are the biggest shareowners of this public owned company since 2016 with a 41. 7% ownership of Deezer.

If you want to help a French company, try quobuz.

[โ€“] Hugr@lemm.ee 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Spotify is from Sweden. (https://nl.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spotify)

Maybe you have other reasons to look for a spotify alternative, but its european.

Spotify gave money to Trumps' inauguration

[โ€“] Fabian@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Revanced works nicely on android (while it is free, is still American though)

[โ€“] doodledup@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Not a music streaming app.

[โ€“] Fabian@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It does also support YouTube Music

[โ€“] helloyanis@jlai.lu 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Here to clarify!

Revanced patches the official YT music app! It makes it more convenient by removing stuff like ads, among with other tweaks you can see in the app. You'll still technically use their app (a modified version of it) but they won't get any revenue. The artists also won't, so be sure to donate to them or buy their albums if you like their stuff!

But it is still a corpo cancer tho

[โ€“] doodledup@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

What is this sub about?

[โ€“] FuzzChef@feddit.org 1 points 1 month ago

There is a small swedish startup that now resides in Luxembourg that has a huge selection.

[โ€“] BenLeMan@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I use YouTube Music with an ad blocker. Arguably better, no? Make them pay while I enjoy my music for free?

And if that doesn't work any more I've got my extensive MP3 library from way back.

[โ€“] dontbelasagne@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Not really imo. Ad blockers can limit a person's revenue on youtube so if I can find a music service that isnt american and supports the artists then that's what I want.
