Again and again, Columbia has shown a willingness to throw students, faculty, free speech, and academic freedom under the bus in acquiescence to a right-wing, pro-Israel narrative that treats support for Palestinians as an affront to Jewish safety.

For all Columbia’s appeasement, President Donald Trump’s Federal Task Force to Combat Antisemitism announced last week that it would cancel $400 million in federal grants and contracts to the university.

There is no appeasing a political force like the Trumpian right, intent on a program of destruction. And there is no appeasing a nationalist Zionist worldview that, defying reason, sees antisemitism in every call for Palestinian freedom. Columbia is proof of the failure of caving in; the administration has offered up a platter of repression for more than a year and is still slated to lose $400 million.

It's not "appeasement" because they want to do it. Stop imagining that these schools give a shit about anything besides $$$ and hegemony.

[–] futatorius@lemm.ee 4 points 8 hours ago

Guess what: appeasement never works.

I mean Columbia is known fur murdering Anti-War protestors since Vietnam.

This time round they cracked down on legitimate and legal protests long before Trump came into office, even allowing MAGA mobs to assault students and faculties, including Jewish people.

They didnt do this because they wanted to appease Trump. They did this because they are loyal to Zionism and are ideologically rooted in authoritarianism, neoliberal capitalism and racism.

I bet that the cut funding will be used to justify downscaling or removing everything related to social justice, critical history, diversity, equal rights and so on.

Yeah, Trump has been known to do that. Columbia got what they asked for.

Anyone who capitulates and thinks they're saving themselves will get the same treatment.

You're showing a prolific abuser that you are weak and willing to submit, and an abuser will take advantage of that weakness. They will never turn around and treat you better because you complied.

The abuse is the point. Trump will always find an excuse.

In fact, the only thing that works is refusing to be bullied. Look at the tariffs.

[–] futatorius@lemm.ee 3 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

In my own personal experience of bullying, the only thing that worked was becoming stronger and smarter than the bullies, and then hurting them badly. Peace through being a hard target. I think it's a principle that applies on the larger political scale, too. Those people don't care about sweet reason. The only thing that will make them stop is the use of power.

Lesson learned, you fucking cucks. Trump doesn't give a fuck about you or academia.

[–] Auntievenim@lemmy.world 5 points 19 hours ago

They will certainly learn from this and become militant against government overreach in all future situations. Yep. That's the one thing I can know for certain going forward: liberals will learn from things and take action to counter this 🤦‍♂️

The best part is he is an adjudicated felon and was indicted in several other cases he ran the clock out on, and he saw a weaponization of government where there was none, yet these protesters have committed no crime and he wants them punished beyond what the law allows.

We are in the upsidedown.

Exhibit A for "Why you should never try to appease fascists"

IT DOESN'T WORK

[–] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 29 points 23 hours ago

The wages of cowardice.

[–] unemployedclaquer@sopuli.xyz 3 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Huh. I heard they had a decent journalism school. Shitheads gonna shithead right

[–] IndustryStandard@lemmy.world 4 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Columbia is the journalism school for people who want to write propaganda for the empire. They invite guests like Hillary Clinton.

When you get a Columbia degree you can get hired by New York Times to whitewash America, or make up war-crimes for American adversaries.

[–] unemployedclaquer@sopuli.xyz 2 points 10 hours ago

Can't deny that, but not all the alumneses are evil. I probably would have applied there, recent events obliterating everything

[–] NimdaQA@lemmy.world 7 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago) (1 children)

Remember, Trump thrown Columbia’s ~~academic freedom and freedom of speech~~ under the bus to please this dude.

[–] technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago) (1 children)

Columbia chose to attack anti-genocide protestors before Trump was even elected. There is no academic freedom or freedom of speech at these places. They've always been under the bus. They lurk under there grifting endless cash from indebted students.

Thanks for the correction.
