And so much better too

Their Curry ketchup is awesome

[–] SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 10 hours ago

I once went to a fancy steak house and ordered potato wedges on the side

They brought us a sauciere of their "new sauce they are working on" to try out

And I swear it was literally just slightly thinned hela curry ketchup

It tasted exactly the same. Still great on wedges, tho

pls don't use the meme template with that dick head

Aussie "ketchup" (tomatey sauce) is more rich and less firetruck red sickly sweet.

Rosella for those interested! https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/61679 (on a meat pie)

[–] b_tr3e@feddit.org 4 points 1 day ago

Flying Goose Red Hot Chili Sauce is the only thing you need. Ketchup is for the weak.

[–] Shou@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Oliehoorn ftw.

Speaking as a veteran of the Canadian Ketchup Wars, victory is achievable!

Canada brought Heinz to it's knees in our ketchup war nearly a decade ago, you can do it too.

[–] M0oP0o@mander.xyz 2 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Sadly even french's is now owned by the americans.

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 1 points 5 hours ago

Yeah but the goal of that Ketchup War wasn't to boycott the US, just to ensure that ketchup was being produced in Canada. And it was successful as Heinz was forced to open a new plant in Canada.

Now I just get the store brand Ketchup (seems good enough to me, it's likely made in the same plant as French's) so I think the US is completely out from my Ketchup purchases. Though I'm not sure who owns that plant (it's not French's they just have a contract with that plant to make it for them) but the point is to reduce the amount of money going to the US as much as possible, and that'll do it.

Wasn’t it always? I think it is a guys name, not a nationality.

The Americans boycotted it during the Iraq wars but that is just because they are stable geniuses.

[edit: just looked it up - Robert French — from New York ]

[–] FrChazzz@lemm.ee 4 points 1 day ago

Upvoted for that “stable geniuses” line. Perfect

It was what the Canadian market moved to for ketchup and mustard after heinz fucked over Canadian workers. Its what the above is referring to, the move to the brand of "french's" to be more pro Canadian.

I am not talking about what usa people did or did not do, just that the Canadian move to french's is now not good enough.

[–] finitebanjo@lemmy.world 1 points 23 hours ago

I'd order some from here just to try it but with the rate things ship to me it won't be hela fresh.

badum'tsh

I also recommend Branston Baked Beans as an alternative to Heinz. Cheaper and better imo

Edit: British brand, Japanese owned

[–] Schal330@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago

I concur! Branston beans have in my opinion a thicker consistency with a deeper flavour and creamier mouth feel. After being converted to Branston, Heinz tastes like metallic orange water with overly firm beans.

[–] SheenSquelcher@lemm.ee 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Want to try these, anyone seen them in UK shops?

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago (4 children)

You're the first British person I've met that wasn't adamant that "brown sauce" was superior and no other condiment is ever needed.

[–] purplemonkeymad@programming.dev 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That statement is correct, but without an inferior sauce to compare it to you can't show other people. I'd rather not buy US for that.

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 1 points 6 hours ago

Yes! This is the attitude I've come to expect from British people about brown sauce :P

[–] Obi@sopuli.xyz 1 points 23 hours ago

I'm not British and brown sauce is great, but these German ones are also great. Keeping my diet in check these days so no sauces for me though T_T

[–] SheenSquelcher@lemm.ee 2 points 1 day ago

Ha yeah, ive never been a fan of brown sauce. And its nice to try something new for a change.

[–] LeFantome@programming.dev 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

HP sauce is very available in Canada as well if that is your thing. That is the “brown sauce” in the UK and it is everywhere.

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 1 points 6 hours ago

Oh I know, and I've traveled so I've had brown sauce before. But condiment preferences is all about what you're used to, so I prefer ketchup. Just find it amusing how adamant British people are about the superiority of brown sauce.

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

HP is owned by Heinz/Kraft.

Daddies is as well.

I'm not going without brown sauce. Some compromises have to be made.

[–] teslasaur@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

You spelt "Felix Ketchup" wrong.

[–] e8d79@discuss.tchncs.de 24 points 2 days ago (6 children)

You guys buy branded ketchup? Its Aldis store brand or nothing for me.

I only buy fancy shit now and just eat less of it, like stokes and a couple of local ones.

All that own brand stuff is just tomato juice concentrate with a load of thickening agents plus sugar and crap to make it taste like something. And Heinz was always overly sweet crap anyway.

[–] morrowind@lemmy.ml 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Aren't you contradicting yourself if you only buy aldis store brand?

Fun fact time! Heinz originated in Pittsburgh and used to have a massive factory built in the 1910's, and when it shut down they eventually renovated it into apartments. The buildings are now all named after what they once produced there - Bean Building, Meat Building, Cereal Building, Reservoir Building, and Shipping Building.

It's rumored that the Meat Building has a vibrant gay community.

Real life lore

[–] Patch@feddit.uk 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Brand ownership can get super weird.

Heinz is an American company. Daddies, which is a very British brand, is now owned by Heinz too, so is also American.

On the other hand Helmann's (of both mayo and ketchup providence) is an American brand which is now owned by Unilever...so technically British.

[–] WhyYesZoidberg@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Tell me about it! I spent waaaay too much time in the store today, looking up the incestuous corporate relationships.

Also, TIL I learned that I need reading glasses :(

Fucking tiny print

[–] tiramichu@lemm.ee 28 points 2 days ago

The Heinz who started the company was the son of German immigrant parents, hence the surname.

Neaver heard of Hela. And also never bought Heinz ketchup either. Only local Polish ketchups ftw.

[–] atthecoast 2 points 14 hours ago

Made in Venlo, the Netherlands

*Hela

Gewürzketchup is pretty different, though. It's not like there aren't hundreds of brands that make regular ketchup.
